Thread Box:
Bikes with the highest availability of replacement parts
Thread started by bentstrider at 08.29.10 - 7:43 pm

So you've all heard mine and others rants about bike shops and their lack of spare parts availability for certain bikes, and by now y'all probably want to choke us out.

Anywho enough about that, which bike types does everyone here think has the highest availability of on-hand replacement parts?
Basically, things you don't have to twiddle your thumbs or drive your car while waiting for a week or two.

Probably a generic mountain bike with entry/mid level Shimano don't you think?

It could also depend on the shop.
I've been having better luck with big boxes like REI and Performance, but many small LBS have had this dangerous habit of either catering to a certain base, or following perceived trends in their local area.

in all seriousness though. if you want a mountain bike i'd suggest some vintage steel. mainly because most are hardtails with rigid forks. i fucking hate suspension. they're also way easier to maintain.

In that case I'll just take my Trek 800 back from one of my friends who doesn't ride that much and restore it.
As for the parts issues I run into, it's not an everyday thing, just a bad case of shit not being there when I all of a sudden need it.
Mainly tubes and the rear wheel of my Hummer about to bite it.

Tubes are not bike specific. For that matter, neither are wheels. Hummer doesn't make wheels and I doubt that there is anything unique about the wheels on your bike.

If you want a good deal on used MTB wheels call the number in this ad:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/bik/1927279700.html

I sold the wheels to this guy who later told me they were the wrong size for his road bike (well, duh! obviously!). I believe he still has them and I'm sure he would be happy to sell them to you the next time you come down from the sticks.
