Laws for wat?
Thread started by tulosba at 08.23.10 - 12:15 pm

Do you guys really think a "Law" will change anything?....I most certainly doubt it....
Laws are made to control not solve.....what we need is a solution not some other wall that can be penetrated by the rich or corrupted....but a solution is unfathomable to politicians, they can't solve a thing....

And I'm pretty sure my question should redirect itself to all the members of midnightridazz and anyone else who wants a law passed to make the streets "safer" so we can ride our bicycles without having to worry about any accidents.

What we need is a change in culture and laws are one method of changing our cultural.

The civil rights act, for instance, means something.
The civil rights act did not end racism, but it did help codify a cultural shift that many people in the US were ready for. Some were not, and the CRA sent a strong message that overt organized racist exclusion would not be tolerated in the public sphere.

We went from an time when politicians were proudly openly associated with the klan ... to 99.99% of all politicians avoiding white supremacy associations like the plague.

Many of them were and are still racist, but they can no longer publicly advocate racist views without being shunned.

We have seen time and again instances of laws influencing practice and culture.

We DO need a 3 feet to pass law in California. We do need stronger legislation to punish hit and run drivers. We do need anti-bike-harassment legislation.

The laws will need to be fair and just to be effective. They will not instantly change the culture. They will not be a catch all. People of power and influence will still operate above the law.

However, codifying our expectations of drivers will help get the word out about these ongoing problems and will place a line in the sand about how we expect people to behave if they are to exercise the privilege of driving.

I understnad completely what you are saying and I agree....but what that did is not change but hid the problem....nothing was solved....this conversation can go infinitly if we don't open our eyes......the solution to all this is irrelevant to any of this....

et that is hilarious.....I am the law lol......

I don't think getting us to where helmets will do anything and I don't think it'll pass. If you get hit by a car and your wearing a helmet sure your head doesn't get split to peaces. That doesn't protect important things like your pelvic region or your spin....or other things that would suck to get broken.....

Nothing is ever "solved" but society and culture do evolve when enough people turn their attention and energy to the task.

Passing laws is just one of many tools that we use to change culture.
Art, science, music, philosophy, activism, punditry, and story-telling are tools to change culture as well. None is more important than another.
