100 mile Unicycle ride!!!
Thread started by UniGeezer at 06.25.10 - 10:50 am

Hello all,

I will be riding my 36" unicycle ONE HUNDRED MILES on Sunday, July 11th...hey, that's 7/11! The ride will help benefit the American Cancer Society, and will span the out & back distance between Huntington beach Pier, and Will Rogers State Beach! I will be starting my solo ride at dawn, on 7/11/10, at 1840 Pacific Coast Hwy, in Lomita, CA.

A few factoids about riding on one wheel for 100 miles:

12-14 hours of continuous pedaling. (Except for bathroom breaks, stretching and street lights, lol!)
No gears, no coasting.
Constant focus on balance
100 miles equates to roughly 56,000 pedal revolutions!
Average moving speed should be 9-11 mph, with top speeds of 14-16 mph.
Ride date is on "7/11"....hopefully my lucky day!

This will be a monumental challenge for me, at age 54, and it is surely a UNIque event and unlike anything anyone has ever seen!

If any of you might be in the area on 7/11, you're welcome to ride along part way or the whole enchilada! Of course, you will likey be on TWO wheels!

You can watch this short video for more info:

I think I saw you too one day a couple months ago on on the bike path by will rogers beach. Good luck to you. That is a worthy cause indeed.

Dude, you look about 35.
What time do you roll from the Sunset Beach water tower house?
I live near there and may join you for the first leg of your ride.

If you have a second and interest in replying, I would like to know why / how you found riding unicycles more enjoyable, etc than our "standard" two wheeled machines. I think it's a really challenging commitment and it obviously has worked for you.

Why did you start and why do you continue? I'd like to know.

Good questions, but the answer(s) is/are fairly straight forward; I prefer riding one wheel (mostly on trails with my 24 or 29 mountain unicycles) for the sheer exhilaration, the challenge, the tremendous physical benefits (it's a total "core" exercise), and for the UNIqueness of the amazing sport that it is! I got my first unicycle in about 1966 at age 10, and learned quickly, and then after about a year I went on to other things.

Little did I know that almost 40 years later, unicycle technology had made quantum leaps in quality and so I decided to start riding again. Now, after more than 4 years since starting again--at age 54--, I only wish I'd never stopped!

I love it now more than ever, and look forward to riding every day, and well into my 70's! The way I see things, I've only just begun, and I have four decades of catching up to do, lol! :)

FYI, I'll be in the Daily Breeze this Friday, 7/2/10. Not sure what section, but they will be mentioning my 100 mile uni ride in the feature article.
