Hacker (or social engineer) took control over cars and disabled them via web site.

My first question is who would agree to this invasion of privacy to have a device that the dealer can control on my car.

 Some of the regulations that were on the drawing board for federal OBD-III standards (the next round of supposedly smog-related regulations) include a mandate to put this technology on all cars, controllable by the manufacturer or the government. Supposedly it was intended to disable your car if you go overdue on a smog check, but the technology gives them more control than that. I think lobbyists defeated it, but not sure, it's been a while since I read up on it...

 No wonder those '74 K5's I keep trying to look for are always going for $3,000-$5,000 in the rawest of conditions, $8,000+ if you want one that's cherry.

Classics are becoming a necessity due to all the new product being pieces of shit.
