I don't worry too much about how other people have their bike rigged.
I just try and stay clear of anybody who doesnt look safe and figure the laws of evolution will eventually take care of the the reckless.

Still, amongst all the talk of banning, criticizing and ostracizing those among us who ride freewheels with no brakes I was inspired to make this public service announcement.

"For the kids."

even fixies should have emergency brakes..... i know you'd never use it, but that's why it's called an emergency brake. for that case that hasn't happened yet

Riding a freewheel bike without brakes (other than BMX riders who got it like that) is ridiculously stupid. I just don't get why people do that. There are so many better ways to endanger your life. I wouldn't want to go out on a bike without brakes. It would be way cooler to end it BASE jumping or something or something like that. Just stay the hell away from me you stupid kids!

They don't call them "emergency brakes" on cars anymore. They call them "parking brakes" because if you actually lock up your rear wheels using the "emergency brake" during an emergency, you're really creating quite a lot more of an emergency there.

i had a friend who was riding a brakeless bmx on a residential street near his house when a car turned in front of him. his face went through the driver's side window and he still has scars 8 years later.

brakeless freewheel is never a good idea.

Certainly, this will be every bit as effective as D.A.R.E. has been in its mission. Bravo, sir! Golf claps, all around.

The guy who became the D.A.R.E. officer in my hometown used to live in a hippie commune and once asked my neighbors to take care of his "trees" (two enormous pot plants) when he went away for vacation during the summer. He didn't seem to trust the commie hippies to take care of his crop, strangely. I can't help but imagine that this was the first crack that ultimately grew into a widening gulf of mistrust toward his comrades, toward that way of life, toward drugs in general.

This is the point in the post where I'd usually try to shoehorn this marginally-relevant anecdote into something applicable to the original topic, maybe make some point about how an individual's fanatical devotion, especially when embedded within a culture that reinforces said devotion, can backfire, causing one to swing to the polar opposite view when the reinforcement mechanisms are removed.

But I won't do that. Instead, here's Jimmy Cliff:
