Paris Bike Share Program set back by vandals
Thread started by Foldie at 10.30.09 - 4:18 pm

This is sad to see. With a great program, Paris is leading the world with their bike share strategy but of course the dumb ass vandals have their way. I wish people would respect their city and infrastructure.

So, what, there's no way to hold them liable?

Isn't there some sort of collateral?

This is what happens in EVERY city it's ever been tried in. It's an inherently flawed model.

If there was really a demand for it, then people could open bike rental shops, but for the most part it's an expensive gimmick that nobody wants.

"The heavy, sandy-bronze Vélib’ bicycles are seen as an accoutrement of the “bobos,” or “bourgeois-bohèmes,” the rich, trendy urban middle-class, and they stir resentment and covetousness. They are often being vandalized in a socially divided Paris by resentful, angry or anarchic youth, police and sociologists say."

Hmmmmmm.... I wonder who that sounds like?

I am in Paris and, let me tell you, the Velib bikes are EVERYWHERE. I've even been checking parked ones to see if there is heavy vandalism and that doesn't at all seem to be the case, at least not in the central city area.

In general, lots of bike riders in this city, though mostly of the commuter type. Fenders, baskets, child seats. Did see a few hipsters riding fixed run a red light behind the Centre Pompidou today. Somehow it was comforting. I almost yelled, "Get a voiture, hippie!" Almost.
