What's the best wheelset for a Road bike?
Thread started by roscoeRIDAZZ at 08.10.09 - 9:56 pm

In your own opinion, what's the best wheelset for a road bike?
and WHY?
also...what's your preferred/current wheelset?

reply

That's a hard one to answer.

Depends... what are you looking for in a wheelset? Something light/fast? Bombproof?

To hold up my music and myself... I've got 36h Deep V's... laced to Ultegra hubs. Has held up very well... I can't recommend that combo enough for a clydesdale... can't go wrong.

Do a search here for wheels and you'll find a lot of info. You might find your answer there.

Zipp 404 clinchers. Best all around wheels. <------- if can only have one set.

I got Zipp 404 and Easton EA90 tubulars too, but impractical for daily use. If you want something more comfortable, try the Spinergy Carbon clincher. I have them on my bike most of the time.

I had the Dura ace tubeless for a bit and they were excellent but tires were expensive ($80 /piece). Hutchinson has new tubeless wheels that look like the Spinergys, its on my list.

There's a lot of choices out there and it ultimately comes down to purpose and what you can afford.

a 32 hole clincher will hold up best .
less chance of getting stranded, even if you bust a spoke or two.
The fancy low spoke count wheels are for racing, once a spoke breaks which becomes normal on high mileage wheels, your screwed the wheel will be so out of true that it will not pass through the frame.

Get some pro level hubs Campy, Dura Ace, DT
A mavic rim with eyelets,and
maybe some nice light weight DT revolution spokes.
and have a pro build em

you get what you pay for......

Yeah...all depends on what you're doing with it and how much you want to spend.

If money is no object and you're not worried about having pricey wheels getting stolen if you leave the bike out somewhere, then Ksyrium SL wheels by Mavic are among the best. They are super light race-ready road wheels but bombproof for the weight of bigger riders. Plenty of cyclo-crossers use them because they're so strong. But they retail for $800/pair. Sometimes you can find good deals on them if there's a lightly used set or a year old pair. I scored a brand new set, one year old, for $400. But I keep them on my nice geared road bike and NOT my city commuter.

For a city bike, I'm sure there's a better value at half the cost and not much heavier.

you usually get what you pay for though...

keep in mind what kind of riding you're doing mostly...(long rides/urban/sprints/crits)

where you're riding...(hills/flats/nice roads/crappy roads)

and how heavy you are....(less spokes are for lighter weights usually)

usually the lighter the wheel, the more expensive it is....
