Thread Box:
careful with those reds!
Thread started by bicigol at 09.19.06 - 12:36 pm

i opted last night to ride the bus home from work instead of riding.

i didn't get very far.

when my bus was waiting on santa monica to cross wilshire a cyclist tried to run a red. he didn't make it.

in short.....suv vs bike

hit and run

possible fatality.........considering he was not moving at all and there was a puddle of blood coming from the riders head. both wrists appeared to be broken. the rider didn't move at all after the crash.

witnesses didn't seem to know who was at fault, the driver or the rider. either way its a risky intersection to try and make a light either by motor vehicle or bike.

but it was a hit and run

i don't know what i'm saying here, other than be safe on those big streets. i ride throught that intersection most days. i have to ride through it tonight to get home. i know i'm going to be riding over that very spot where the rider lay. i'll be thinking about him.

so watch the roads.

i'm pissed that the driver took off. even it wasn't the driver's fault, they shouldn't have taken off like that...........maybe it was his fault and that's why he took off. anyway...........that driver is at large.

i can't do much about it

maybe together we can

there's a big fountain at that intersection. perhaps we can ride to the fountain to show some numbers. let people know we're out there. maybe the beverly hills p.d. might show. maybe some coverage. maybe some driver sitting at home might see that we know he's at large.

keep riding
keep safe

I'm commuting to west la tomorrow... I'll see you guys there. lets find out who it was that got hit too...

i may walk out with no info, but its a try

Suspected Hit-And-Run Driver Turns Himself In

(CBS) BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. A 39-year-old Los Angeles man turned himself in to Beverly Hills police Tuesday evening in connection with a hit-and-run collision that killed a 23-year-old bicyclist, police said.

Peter Kim surrendered around 5 p.m., about an hour after his attorney contacted Beverly Hills police, Beverly Hills police Sgt. Michael Publicker said.

Kim was booked for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, Publicker said.

As of 6:30 p.m., Kim had not posted bail, Publicker said.

Witnesses told police that "a large dark-colored American sport utility vehicle" struck Ilia Pankin of Los Angeles about 7:30 last night at Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards, Publicker said.

The vehicle sped off westbound on Wilshire Boulevard and has not been located, Publicker said.

Pankin died at UCLA Medical Center, Publicker said.

Anyone with information about the SUV was asked to call Beverly Hills police at (310) 550-4951.

its all good, we can meet up at the fountain. if we have a crowd we can spill over into the park area that is along santa monica

his only concern was keeping people off the street, to which i responded that we would only be on the street when riding to and from the vigil

i didn't have a head count for him but let him know i would contact him if the # seemed to be getting large

its cool, we have a green light, they don't mind a vigil, just be cool with all those who are trying to get home at that time

"when my bus was waiting on santa monica to cross wilshire a cyclist tried to run a red. he didn't make it."

Bicigol, If you are certain Pankin ran the red then I think you need to give a statement to the BH cops. Yeah, it's completely wrong for Kim to hit-and-run and he'll no doubt pay for that one way or another.

My concern is that Kim may pay for something that he didn't do. I don't think that's fair.

_____
There is a memorial ride for the Honor of Ilia Pankin going down this friday night the 22nd.

We will be meeting @ the intersection where Ilia went down @ Santa Monica & Wilshire in Beverly Hills @ 9pm this friday night

From there we will be finishing his ride home to west hollywood then to a nearby park(not determined yet - stay tuned for exact location)

there is also a group of people meeting @ the Performance Bike shop (where Ilia worked) @ 8pm - Corner of 5th and Broadway in Santa Monica: 501 Broadway, Santa Monica,90401. we will leave that spot around 8:30pm to meet up with the group @ the intersection @ 9pm

there is also a meeting earlier downtown LA that will be making the journey as well - stay tuned, i will post as i organize more details regarding this meeting time and place...

the memorial ride is welcome to anyone on a bike that would like to come, please pass this around - i will have an official flyer to email later on today

thank you to everyone for thier support

Regardless of whether the guy was at fault or not, he bailed from the scene and in my mind that makes him responsible for a crime and deserves to be punished. Had it been on a lonely highway he would have gotten away with manslaughter. but since Peter Kim was at a busy intersection and the accident was covered on TV I'm assuming he felt pressured to turn himself in. Anyone who bails like that from a crash scene is uncaring and a coward. sorry. this prolly looks harsh the way I wrote it, but I get steamed up about this shit. same shit happend to Skull last year and the driver was never found. thankfull that She got away with a broken ankle instead of death.

I guess in the eyes of the law there would be some easement to his sentence if it wasnt his fault and that's how it works. but fuck that. that still some coldblooded shit.

see you guys tonight AND friday.

as far as who was at fault..........the bus i was on had a camera facing the street. the driver stopped and waited around to submit that footage to the police. that will determine who ran what and where fault may lie.

OK.
So I'm looking at my route and here's the best that I can come up with...

I'm starting the Route at Barnsdall which is on the opposite end of Hollywood. I have no idea how many ridazz are going to show up, which will be crucial in determining how fast the group will be travelling.
I think that we can be at Fairfax High (Melrose and Fairfax) around 11pm. That would be my mid ride stop and would be a great rendezvous point for the various rides. From there we could all cruise down melrose to Santa Monica and end at the Fountain.
Then we could be there till midnight and get the press and cops hip to this....

What do you guys think?

nice turnout tonight guys... crazy how Ilia's mom showed up. and so did ABC and KCAL. they posed us. it was kind of funny. look for it. lol. They asked his mom at one point a question referring to all of us as the guy's friends... but she didnt recognize any of us cause none of us knew him. We just all felt moved by the story of how this guys died and we gave him support. His mom appreaciated it.

maybe we don't even need to snow ball.... can you guys map out the route that Ilia would have taken and what park it will end at. we can meet up with you guys at the park or something and follow the same route you guys go down.

theif,

first of all thanks to everybody who came out tonight...

sounds great - here is the loop we had planned on riding, mostly because this is the route ilia took a few days a week:

we had planned to meet at the fountain @ santa monica & wilshire in beverly hills @ 9pm - gather everybody - raise our bikes up over our heads and observe a moment for ilia - head down santa monica towards hollywood until La Brea - left on La Brea passed hollywood to right on Yucca - left on El Cerrito Pl - ilia lived on the left (almost corner) of Yucca and El Cerrito Pl - right on Franklin - right on Highland - right on Hollywood - left on La Brea - down La Brea to Melrose - right on Melrose and we can meet your ride @ Melrose & Fairfax around 11pm @ Fairfax High - we could all like you said: continue down Melrose to santa monica and then stop at the fountain and gather until midnight.

that work out ok for everybody?

thanks again for coming out tonight and for everyone planning to be there friday night

here is a link to the flyer going around regarding the memorial ride:
http://www.2020-marketing.com/ilia/ilia.pdf

also, thankyou to who ever tipped off the media for tonight, we hope the media can come out again for friday nights meeting - please feel free to spread this around...big thanks to the Ridazz for helping make this more public - thanks!

yes very cool last night... this is the type of thing that makes this website worth while. Bicigol good to meet you. thanks for posting this and helping to mobilize people to go to the fountain. the more we all show support when cycle accidents happen the more people wlll become aware of cyclists on the road... which mean hopefully less accidents.

I am really glad to hear about last night.

Unfortunately I took a spill jamming down a hill on Sunset that sent me to the ER. I'm ok, nothing broked but an ego, my glasses, and one of my cranks. I'm pretty black and blue though.

So I can't go on the ride tomorrow. What I can do, is help out until then.
I have a group off line that is helping me organize it, and I've sent them emails asking for one of them to step up and fill my shoes. The planning is done, so it's just making sure that it's followed through at this point.

Depending on what I hear back, I will post here, and change my calendar slot.
Maybe I'll just post the route and have it DIY - whoever can start at Barnsdall, then meet at Fairfax at 11 and cruise over to the fountain.

I will be in touch.

I just wanted to say how sad I am for his family and friends and that theres seems to be an uptick in vechicular accidents just in the past month. I recently met my new neighbor and found out he was hit by a car on his bike crossing La Brea on Fountain and now his entire left leg is in a cast and he has 50,000 worth of medical bills. There was also a bad accident in West Hollywood last week involving a female cyclist. What the fuck is going on?? THis seems to be the time to approach the city, hold a news conference. SOMETHING.

That's assuming the cameras were actually working at the time of the accident and the hard drives can be downloaded from the bus.
Very often, the camera systems fail on these buses due to the extraordinary pounding they receive from L.A.'s incredibly terrible street conditions. The cameras will work for a couple of months at best before failure and then are not repaired or replaced very quickly. Hopefully, useful images will be available but don't count on it.
