I too have an old Univega and just 2 weeks ago SMOKED Franz right at the begining of Cubcamp. Of course, he WAS running as he had no bike, but I smoked him nonetheless; and THAT'S what counts!

 I like Univegas. Like most other 80s Universal Japanese Bikes, they are well-made lugged steel bikes made from good tubing. Most of them were made by Miyata or National.

They aren't snob bikes, fer sure, but they are common and you can get them for pretty cheap and they'll probably outlast you. UJBs can also take most modern parts except threadless stems, making upgrades and fixes easy.
