sidewall exploded!
Thread started by digablesoul at 07.15.09 - 10:34 am

I just had a blowout. 1/4 inch hole on the sidewall (gatorskins). Need a quick fix to get back home after work. Luckily it blew 1/2 mile from work so I'm wallking it right now. thanks in advance!

Patch/replace the tube, then fold a dollar bill in half (or a piece of paper), and put that on the inside of the tire covering the hole. That should get you home.

if the hole is not too huge, try a candy bar wrapper between the tube and the tire

use low pressure and try to get home, but i would say that depends on how far away that is...

Sweet idea guys! First my tube blew out and I replaced it. As I was putting air in the new one "bam". I was barely above 100 psi. Says its rated up to 116 but I wasn't even on it yet! Lesson learned. I'm buying a foldable tire if I'm going to do this bike to work thing... Thanks fellas!

depending on what time you get off work, i could maybe pick you and your bike up and take you home if you cant ride.

That happened to me throughout neverland! Big thanks to Gopez, Rev. Mook, Coe Coe Butta and a fellow named Jorge for staying behind. We temporarily fixed what we thought was a regular flat. Until we got to the park and noticed it was the actual beading on my tire that was fucked... We lowered the air and taped up the tire to the rim with some electrical tape (thanks Luis for the tape) and then went over
it with some electrical tape. Then pumped the tire up and rode it like that the rest of the way and the next day to the bike kitchen. It held out pretty well! :) hope you make your way home safe!

Thanks rbi... I get off at 8pm but ill be good. I'll do the dollar/paper thing during my break... but if the hole is to big, which it might be... Ill try to convince a coworker to drive me during lunch.

Ok... Patched and did the dollar thing. There's a little bump and could see the outline of the bill. Any chance that It could fail?

@ gizzard or anyone else that have done this... How long can u have the dollar in there? Common sense says to replace it right away but it was like $40!!! Ill try to buy a foldable tire so that it could be my back up later.

A little J-B Weld will do the trick.

I did not know they made these... Is this just for emergency purposes or can be used as a permanent fix so I can save my tire?

Using the jb weld to keep the park tool boot in place?

in theory, you might be able to use something long term, either the dollar bill or the park tool item, but i think you'll find that if you try to take the tire up to full pressure the repair might not hold & you'll need a new tire soon...

I'd buy the Forte Kevlar GT2 Road Tire for $12.99, instead of hoping JB Weld will work.

I ddnt use the bill, just tape. I rode it for a good 15 miles or so. I know stupid... But it held THAT well!

forget the candy bar wrapper that was suggested earlier. Candy bars are wrapped in fairly weak materials. Powerbars and some other energy bars are wrapped in mylar or other stronger materials and are much more effective when patching a hole in a tire.
