Thread Box:
Mission Bikes?
Thread started by RickDarge at 06.17.09 - 5:08 pm

Anyone ever order from Mission Bikes in San Francisco? They have an online site, missionbicycle.com where they can custom build a fixie. I'm thinking of getting a fixie as a second bike option but am overwhelmed on where to start. Fixie bikes' prices range all over the board and there are too many options. Thinking of checking out O20 tomorrow.

go to bikesdirect.com and order a mercier kilo tt. then do everyone a favor and stop using the word "fixie".

RBI's right.

Bikesdirect.com is a great place to buy a cheap fixie.

Hahaha. I'm sorry. I'm such a noob. Fixie is too hipster of a word. How about Fixed Gear Road Bike.

road bike implies it has gears.

mission bikes are really just IRO frames with more flexibility on parts/colors. as rbi mentioned, BD is a good option for an out-of-the-box fixie.

no they arent. iro frames (at least the older ones) have the bottle cage allen screws on the seat tube whereas the mission frames have them on the downtube. the older iro frames are of a higher quality than the newer ones. no bubble gum welds, etc.

Do any of you guys have a Mercier Kilo TT Pro? If so, how do you like them? They seem pretty awesome for the price. I was looking at RepublicBike.com but hear their frames are shit. One thing I'm worried about is buying online. I heard sizing could be an issue since different companies spec their bike sizes differently..

republic bikes are garbage. the only difference between the regular kilo and the kilo pro a few of the parts (low end machined deep v knockoffs, a 130 bcd sugino "track crank", and a free brake). although calling the brake free is sort of a misnomer, because you can get one with the regular kilo for $50 extra.

I can personally attest to the longevity and durability of the Mercier Kilo TT. Best $345 I've ever spent. Been riding mine since January 2008 and have put more than 10,000 street miles on the bike as a freewheel singlespeeder.

Thanks for the feedback man

So would you go PRO or non-PRO then? Seems like with all fixed gears, you're going to want to upgrade parts over time so methinks non-pro to start off with. And would you recommend just going balls out and getting no-brake on your fixed gear or brake for safety?

Sizing can be an issue. I ride a 54cm bike normally, but it was too tall when I got my Waterford, had to get a 52cm.

Get at least a front brake.

No matter how good you are at skids, if you need to stop quickly and/or your chain breaks, it's nice to not have to Ted Shred it to a stop.

Mission buys cheap frames from a generic supplier, has them painted, matches them with colored components, and sells them for far more than they are worth.

The owners are just trying to take advantage of the fixed gear craze.

Sounds like it based on their mission statement,
"We started Mission Bicycle because we weren't satisfied with the bicycles sold in bike stores. The best bicycles on the streets of San Francisco are the custom built fixed gear bikes those with the know-how are building up for themselves and friends. It didn't make sense to us that these bikes were not available to everyone else so we set out to change that by buying cheap frames from a generic supplier and having them repainted."

I'm going to checkout O20 tomorrow for ideas.

TMR checked out Mission Bikes when we were up in SF between SFCM and the ALC ride. Looked like a pretty decent bike shop as far as I could tell, but honestly I was more interested in the bar down the street called Zeitgeist which has a massive rear courtyard with lots of hooks you can hang your bike from, full of cool peeps, and I even bumped into one of katiepoche's friends. NICE.
