Thread Box:
twitter updates for rides?
Thread started by mullingitover at 07.6.08 - 1:40 pm

Please forgive me if this has been brought up before, but I'm wondering if there's some way we could get live updates for rides? Twitter or something similar would be perfect for this. I ask because I've only been on a few rides, but often I see that the groups get separated for various reasons and nobody has a clue where the destination is, so it's a big mess. Almost everyone has a cell, and if we could get twitter updates from the ride leader to let us know where the next stop is, we'd have no problem finding the group.

It would require the ride leader to send a text message a few times during rides, not a huge amount of effort but a lifesaver if you're late/lost/want to catch up with the ride. Any thoughts?

reply

Just get somebody's phone/chirp number. Ain't nobody going to sit around twittering while he tries to lead a ride.

I ain't no motherfucking Luddite, Box. I just have a hard time imagining a ride leader dutifully whipping out his cell phone at every stop and sending a text message. Voice-based communication on bike rides = win.

...but I'll be honest. I got one of those Twitter invites a little while ago and at the bottom it says:

Twitter is a unique approach to communication and networking based on the simple concept of status. What are you doing? What are your friends doing—right now?

Since my answers to those questions are almost always, respectively, "None of your business" and "If I'm not with them I don't give a fuck," I have determined that Twitter is not designed for a person like me. YMMV, IANAL, LOL.

There's something called a spoke card. Its not just a decoration for your wheels. the route is printed at the back. Get to the meeting spot early and ask for one.

I say: TWITTER! :-) www.twitter.com/ActOut .

PC, we already know what you are doing: Sitting at the computer, while someone is pedaling the power and girls are serving you beer every 15 minutes. When you get bored, you go on a ride. Then you're back at the computer, whipping the pedal boy to get faster nternet connection. LOL!

Yeah, dude, I just invented this awesome new solution that converts your voice to text, and then converts the text to International Morse Code, and then from Morse to semaphores, and then from semaphores to RTTY, and then from RTTY to sign language, and then from sign language back to voice. It's just the thing for when you're lost at a ride. So much better than just, you know, calling somebody.

P.S. I love you.

Fool? Like minds more like it, which either means i'm a genius like you or your a fool too? I'd prefer the former.

Whenever someone references semaphore, etc. i immediately think of that sketch and the charade sketch is pure comedic genius. Also reminds me of 'baby fish mouth' from WHMS (not quite as genius, but stupid funny).

I'd like to think the former, but I fear it is the latter.

What is WHMS? The only "Baby Fish Mouth" I know is the His Name Is Alive song.

Semaphores.....

I always think of that one down the street from my house by the train tracks.

I once climbed on top of it and threw eggs at a train when I was 15.

I think this idea is great actually. perhaps it would be as easy as sending out the entire route via a single text instead of piece by piece at every stop?

the down side of this is that it is being used for trend forecasting and marketing. basically, your history of texts builds a profile of keywords associated with your email and phone. in the future these will be sold to marketers who want to know what you like.

"I'm trying to figure out why this is better than putting it on a spoke card or route slip."

good side: it's cheaper and requires less time.

Bad Side: No physical evidence of the ride. no spoke card :(

compromise: use it if you see fit. people that care will still make spoke cards.

PC -- Sending ONE text message to everyone vs. fielding phone calls from The Lost, perhaps multiple calls depending on how Lost they are, perhaps multiple people ... I think the benefits are pretty clear. Time, energy, annoyance are spared.

SoapBoxLA -- When I think of our good man PC, I don't think Luddite. I think more Cappuccine Monk. Cappuccine were pretty cool -- they came up with the delicious coffees. But they were still monks.

I don't remember hearing anything of this being some sort of replacement for the spoke card. If people started doing it as a supplemental to help keep people together through more real time info, fine.
I don't use text messaging or twitter, so I'll be hanging out with PC reading the route map.
