Handle Bar Style
Thread started by illafilla at 12.11.07 - 9:23 am

Yikes! LA chewed up and spit out my old bike :( , but I'm building a new single speed :) .

Considering I will have a front brake, which handle bar style should I go with? Comments (smart assed and otherwise) or opinions would be appreciated...

reply

put the lever on the left side of your bars all the way up against the stem. it will work regardless of you running bullhorns, drops, flat bars, etc...

because its a front brake, not a rear brake.

put it on the right side, that way you can signal *and* brake at the same time...

its alright. now youve seen the light. switch the lever (or just take it off altogether) and join me in headbanging to japanese death metal.

I think I may just change it to a foot brake, or, actually, I think I'll leave it on the right of the bars and only use it with my foot.

Don't know about the Japanese death metal, though, I don't want my head to explode. Shit, the last time I listened to Jimmy Buffet stuff started leaking out of my nose, ears, and eye sockets. My skull can generally only handle Perry Como and Lawrence Welk.

well in Europe they put the front brake lever on the right side. also on motorcycles, the front brake lever is always on the right side. personally, i prefer it that way.

RBI your music knowledge never ceases to impress me. Being from Ojai, you must have a ton of time on your hands, and you clearly spend all that time listening to music. So here's my thesis for my anthropology doctorate: If you're from a small town, there's a 95% chance you'll be a worthless meth head, and a 5% chance you'll have impressive and vast knowledge on the topic of your choosing.

Now I need funding to research that claim.

Last time I was in Ojai I spotted a kid wearing a handpainted leather jacket with a bunch of punk bands on it. One of the names stood out like a bigass zit on the tip of one's nose, Shockheaded Peters, not very punk but very cool and not a gold record seller these days.

i ride a fixed gear. i am a hipster. the best years for music were 1968 through 1974.

my apartment is on the border between ojai and oak view. the latter is the meth capital of ventura county.

i know (knew) the kid with the painted jacket. he got into heroin like every other street punk and beat up his girlfriend (whos mother was a public defender) and is now in jail on breaking and entering charges. his name is cameron. my senior year of high school (his freshman year) he took green spraypaint and covered the school in BONG RIPS FOR JESUS.

I only included 2002-2007 because of the 2s and 7s. Plus:

Mclusky Does Dallas was released in 2002
Future of the Left and Shooting at Unarmed Men came to life
Deerhoof's best stuff started in 2002
The best Fall albums in decades arrived in the last 5 years
The Mekons 25th Anniversary was in 2002.

I should drop 1992-1997 because the worst of the Fall was released during those years.

"If you're from a small town, there's a 95% chance you'll be a worthless meth head, and a 5% chance you'll have impressive and vast knowledge on the topic of your choosing."

Actually, there is a 100% percent chance of being a worthless meth head. And a 5% chance of being a worthless meth head with an impressive and vast knowledge of some specific subject.

I can put together a venn diagram to illustrate if you like.

Oh, and I think mustache bars are neat.

Hey ruinedbyidiots, you are the god of metal! I'm sure you know about the bike swap in Ventura this weekend:

http://www.walteriabicycles.com/5706.html

Front brake lever on the right side is a motorcycle thing. It makes sense, the right hand is typically the dominant one. Also, if you look at photos of old British time trial fixed-gear riders they put their levers on the right side too:

http://davesbikeblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/twiddling.html

I know it's not fashionable, but why not just use a road drop bar with two road levers? There's a reason why this setup is the most popular -- it frickin' works! The hoods are among the most comfortable places on a bar and the best place to be when you start accelerating or you're out of the saddle. Plus you can drop down on a sprint and embarrass all your friends with chopped risers.

You can put a stoker lever on the other side if it pains you to have brake lever that does nothing.
