find the right size depending on how tall you are.

you might be the average height girl 5"0 to 5"5, look for a 48cm to 52cm bike frame.

Build your own. Then that way you wont look like a dumbass when you get a flat..... or when the whole fixie trend is over you can add gears to your conversion because you realize it's practical cuz LA was built on hills

Before 1867 when it was starting to get established. This isn't the midwest we're not on the great plains. Stay in school son! Plus not everyone can conquer every hill as you easily can, especially not noobs.

Des Moines has some pretty sick hill sections if you know where to look.

But, since no one here is up for a trip past the Rockies, I've wasted my breath.

Test ride the Urbis by Redline. It's at The Flying Pigeon bike shop in LA.

I would post a pic but for some reason MNR.com is not allowing it now.

If you go to my page, then go to my blog you will find an icon for "Redline" on the right hand side of my webpage. Click on it to see a pic of the Urbis fixie.

Here is a link to the pic.

It costs a little more than 200.00 but not all fixies are created equal, this one rides noticeably better than most that I've tested. Plus it comes with one front disk break so that saves you some money right there since you won't have to add it later.

Not jumping on your case, but why are some utilizing "MNR" as an acronym for Midnight Ridazz?
I always differentiate by using MR for this site and MNR for that 818 chili cook-off I have yet to experiment with.

I say borrow one and find out how dumb it is to ride all over Los Angeles'sss hilly roads. When you mess up your knees, decide to buy a bike with gears. If you still want a fixed gear bike, get something easier to pedal for those hills. Lower gear ratio. I say front gear teeth count should be 46-48 and the back gear teeth cog should be 18-20. I rode a fixed gear for a second. It's over rated. It's great for the velodrome, not for the streets. If you want to have fun riding, get a bike with gears. If you want to do tricks and skid into a park car, and if you want to be at the end of the pack when going up or down hills or generally whenever your gear ratio is not the optimum, then get a fixed gear bike. Sheldon Brown says they are the best bicycle ever created by human invention!

I don't think gears are necessary depending on what part of town you live. If you're up in Mt. Washington or the Hollywood Hills, sure, you're going to deal with climbs all the time and gears will be a god send. Other areas are a lot more flat. So it all depends on where you will do most of your riding. I have a SS and my commute to work is flat so that's what works for me.

Let's also remember that you can have gears and the lightest bike but if your endurance and leg power sucks, well, you're not going to be winning any races. If the OP wants to give a FG or SS a chance without spending lots of $, then try bikesdirect.com. Get something with a flip flop hub so you can have options. People have very strong opinions about the BD bikes but I own one and I'm pretty happy with it. Others will tell you to go to your LBS but that's up to you and how much $ you're willing to part with.

What kind of a question is that? Hills are everywhere. And they're awesome. I mean, people's tastes vary, but as far as I'm concerned, hills are the best part of riding in this city. Some of the most interesting places in LA are on top of hills.

If you're going to pick away at sweeping_generalization_del_demonio's post, why not take aim at that ridiculous statement about fixed gear riders always being at the back of the pack going up hills? In fact, they're usually at the front of the pack going up hills, because if they want to keep their momentum up enough to actually ride, then they've got no choice but to rush into the thing balls out (or, uh, ovaries out, or whatever). Well, either that, or they're walking, which I guess would put them at the back of the pack, but still, they're at the front more often than not, is my point...

I like my gears. I'm keeping them.
