i wanna carry something in my backpack to bump some music for a ride,but dont want to add on anything like a sound system on my bike..im thinking of a small boombox..idk any suggestions.

the trade off is always that for bass frequencies to travel any significant distance. you need volume ... ie (WxDxH). There is no other way. High frequencies can travel a long way with low wattage, but if you love bass driven music you are simply have to add an exponential of volume, power, and weight to have the bass heard by more than one or two people... especially out doors where sound just dissipates.

oh sweet bass, why are you so elusive?

I built my boombag in a courier bag.

I suggest getting a bag dedicated as a boombag either and old good condition bag, or find one at a thrift store.

Tools needed: Circular saw, Jig saw, Drill w/bits & screwdriver bit, and x-acto knife

measure out the bag, and build a plywood box that fits within the bag, with an opening at the top.

use "piano hinge" that you can pick up at any hardware store, and cut a piece of plywood for the top and screw together.

For a power source I went back and forth on but thought the best way for me was to use a small jump box I picked up at pep boys for $30. I like the jump box because it has a 12v outlet (cigarette lighter style) and it's rechargeable. Make sure it will fit in your plywood box!

For a speaker I used a 3-way 6x9 and a external preamp. You can also use powered computer speakers w/bass and a 12v/110v converter.

Figure out how it will position around your power source, and cut out hole, and drill access holes for power source (for charging plug, and 12v access)

Put in bag and cut hole in bag for speaker (make hole is a bit smaller than speaker)
Screw speaker through bag fabric into wood box.

Mount the amp on the side of the bag. This is needed to ventilate the amp and it gives me access to the volume control on the amp.

I use an amp I picked up off of ebay for $12.99 (S&H INCLUDED) Can't beat that!

I like it because it allows me to adjust the volume, bass and treble.

It's pretty basic about 100w - 40w output. You could go bigger 500w - 75w output but your battery life will suffer.

On a full charge I can get a good 5 hours at max volume.

The whole thing ran me like $75 and was fun and easy to build once you have all the components. It's also not the lightest thing in the world about 15lbs. (mainly the jump box weight) but I like having it on my back vs on the bike, it gives me more control of the bike. I also don't have to take it on and off the bike and can use it indoors as well.

I'm no expert, but the backpack would seem to be louder due to general speaker positioning and max. power output.

This iHome deal seems to be more of a bicycle equivalent to a car's stock radio for basic listening purposes.
You could probably hear it close by, but that's it.

I have heard that ihome speaker set up, and my response was: that thing sucks. The same for that other little speaker thing that I've seen mounted to handlebars. Barely could hear it above the traffic noise on my commute (although Sunset Bl. is a bit on the louder side compared to side streets), and it sounded like it was coming from a tin can. But perhaps I'm spoiled, read on.

I got this system--very happy with it: Cyclesound, http://www.cyclesound.net/. I can crank it up pretty good--not as loud as a trailer obviously, but for 6 AAs it's pretty loud and decent quality. And it's made by some bike dude that is also very into enjoying his ride--name's Dell. I got the mount that attaches under my saddle and run a wire to my iphone that mounted on my bars for easy controls. Very pleased with the whole thing. It mounts/dismounts from the bike very easily--or I'm sure you could hook it up to a bag somehow.

It cost me about $150, which may seem kinda steep, but talking to others that have rigged systems, it seems that's about what a moderate system will run you.

Speakers.....I think they're FKWs--or fuck knows what.

I'm no electrician (hence me buying my set-up rather than making it from scratch), so I have no idea how to report what kind of speakers they are. My non-technical answer would be only: regular small-ish speakers, and nothing in the way of amps, ohms, volts, impedance, gain, etc. Sorry for being so un-helpful here. The website might have some technical stuff. I've emailed Dell and he's pretty cool, so I'm sure he'd love to rap about it.
