my friends and i are organizing a ride from surfers point, on the beach in ventura and riding up to somewhere around rose valley (4000+ feet) and back in a month or so. would any of the midnight ridazz be interested in coming with us? we would be heading out early in the morning on a saturday, although the final date has yet to be set in stone.
its a good 45 mile ride. if interest is shown i can post more info.

sounds like fun... is it street or dirt?
feel free to post in the Ride Calendar...

the route we have planned is asphalt only.
theres a bike trail that goes along highway 33 from the beach in ventura all the way to ojai. after we get off the bike trail you just have to follow the highway winding through the canyon to the final destination.
im planning on doing it in a month because i want to give the huge forest fire thats burning a chance to go away because im pretty sure we will be riding through recently charred areas.

if the roads werent closed due to the fire, id drive it to see how far it is each way. im almost positive its going to be at least 60 miles round trip, if not more. the last 15 miles or so have you going from 800 ft above sea level to over 4000. its an intense ride that will take most of the day. we could leave around noon if you wanted, but this is something that you really shouldnt do at night, even with all sorts of lights and reflectors. the scenery at the top is worth it though. you can sort of see it in that picture. its about two miles from rose valley.

Haven't been up there in a while, but I remember it as being a pretty nice ride through the "canyon" you could almost call it. Nice fruit stand about a third of the way up to Ojai. There's some elevation gain though along the route, to put it politely. We started in Ojai and rode down to Ventura.
One of these days I'm going to try the "roadies route" along the old road between Calabasas and WestLake Village. 36 mi round trip, some small hills but should be a nice ride. Getting tired of riding back and forth to Balboa Park from Canoga. And the urban jungle of the concrete canyons of DTLA...

And if you're car-free or whatever, take the train to Ventura, camp out at Emma K. Wood beach overnite, which is just a short couple miles (if that) from the base of the bike path to Ojai.
See you at the corn field tomorrow.

google earth says its 28 miles to the top, so we are just shy of 60 miles.
this is happening october 21st.
since that guy that won the tour de france 7 times rides this road to train, the return route will have us going by his house up here. ill post all of this plus some more in the ride calendar when i make a flyer.
hope to see you there!

I hope I don't sound like the wimp that I actually am but,...I think thats a pretty serious 28 mile uphill ride (its been a while so maybe its not as bad as I remember). So, Ojai is a pretty interesting place to visit, how about two parts to this ride. The hardcore types could go up and back while the wimps like me could start at the top (Ojai) and coast, more or less, for 28 miles back down to that park at the bottom. Its a great ride, if the fire doesn't destroy everything.
If you set a particular start time, maybe 3pm, for the return trip down the hill maybe more people might consider making the ride. Your significant other could drop you off at Ojai and meet you at the bottom at the park. There's stuff to do in Ojai or they could hang out at the park at the bottom, getting blitzed or be collecting mistletoe from the trees, and have the bar-b-que fired up and ready for the returning ridazz.
Anyways, just a suggestion.

ah, i see what you mean. that is a very valid point.
how about everyone just ride to soule park on the east end of town and we can have a bbq or whatever. the bike trail ends like a mile from the park. it would be like, 40 miles round trip.
this is a very hippie oriented town. wear your tiedie, smoke some reefer, and eat some granola.

it sounds grueling.... but I'm down to do it from the bottom.
this ojai route sounds something similar to the rosarito ensenada ride... 4000 feet though? that's a heck of a climb! I think rosarito ensenada is 1100 feet. shit.
post this as a ride lets whip up a posse...

BTW what time do you think the ride would start in the morning?

we talked about it, and none of us are really morning people, so we are going to meet around 11 / 11:30 and leave by noon.
im down for riding to the top or to the park for a bbq. i guess we could take a poll of everyone that shows up at surfers point which way they want to go.
you can be drunk as shit just like the rosarita ride. a flyer will be made by the end of the day.

how far is each trip? do they both still arrive at ojai? I'm not at all familiar with the area....

20 miles each way. probably an hour and a half to two hours from start to finish.
to the park from the beach is an easy ride. i did it when i was twelve on a bmx. the climb from sea level to ojai (800 ft) is gradual. there are no steep grades like the canyon. anyone can do this ride on any type of bike.

Its beautiful countryside for a bike ride. But...friday nite is the horror ride, saturday nite is the goth cruzz, and sunday is the the RagnorRide. And I'm trying to finish putting together my schwinn varsity with the cruiser bars for the weekend, so I can reprasent at the goings on and show that we really do ride weird bikes out here north of the 310. have fun.

the bike trail is great, but ive been riding it for eleven years and now its sort of repetitive. thats why i have to go to la to ride with you guys to break up the monotony or whatever. midday ridazz, ride on!

dude once again man... great route. 11 years on that path? I could tell! you and jordan were hauling all over the place. you guys got it good...
and thanks for all the info on the various interesting tidbits about the area. Johnny Cash's crib, the forest fire he started that killed a flock of condors. the starbucks corporate creep up. I've been noticing the starbucks on the corners now. lol.
I'm bringing more people next time. I have to admit the topographical map of the ride you put out looks gnarly. I'm down to bust the elite route too. I'm a climber but I prolly wont be able to keep the pace you guys do.
