Hit & Run in DTLA by White Porsche, Plate 5ZNY307
Thread started by dudeonabike at 01.6.10 - 9:31 am

Commuter down by white Porsche just across Fig from 2nd St tunnel. He's not in good shape. Couldn't move but could talk. Taken away by ambulance. Works for City.

African American female driver stopped, saw the downed rider, said someone should call 911, made a u-turn and drove away.

Officers responded. Officer Marroquin took report from witness--a FIDM student.

Many cyclists (including myself) regularly travel through this intersection so ride safe--and be on the lookout.

reply

holy crap =(

i can't believe she stopped and said that then just took off

so glad you guys got her license plate number, that chick should be locked up

This is an opportunity to remind everyone on this forum to submit comments regarding the bike plan. The deadline is this Friday. Some ideas for what to say can be found here:

Dammit! I'll be downtown in an hour. I will keep my eyes open for this car.
All DTLA riders need to be on the lookout for this car. We must catch her.
The cops won't do it.

You're mistaken. The police will apprehend the suspect/assailant. An eyewitness with a description of the driver, car and license plate is the gold standard for reporting an incident. With this information, it's almost certain she will be caught.

When are they going to get her? She's already cleaning the damage off her car. Probably contacting a lawyer. Getting her alibi and lies ready. The longer it takes the more time she has to wipe clean any evidence that her car hit a cyclist. The longer it takes the more time she has to come up with a story that she wasn't involved and her car was mistakenly identified. She needs to be apprehended sooner than later. The cops don't have the resources nor the incentive.

I hope the dude is ok, too, but the stretcher and neck brace don't bode well. He'll have some injuries for sure.

The best news is that uber-advocate Stephen Box knows him and his family--and now of the incident. We should all be so lucky.

It's a great question, "When are they going to get her?" Unless you're listening with a police scanner, you aren't privy to the ongoing investigation. Even with a scanner, it's hard to understand their lingo.

"The cops don't have the resources nor the incentive. " On what basis do you come to this conclusion? You're much better off making statements based on facts than assumptions.

I would agree that the police would probably assign few resources to a hit and run if there was no description of the assailant, vehicle or license plate. With these 3 key pieces of information, they will respond effectively and will apprehend the suspect. Whether the DA chooses to and is successful in prosecuting the suspect will depend on many factors. Justice is imperfect and messy. That doesn't mean no one cares.

Jesus Fucking Christ! This isn't the time to play "who's dick is bigger". A rider has been seriously injured. Everyone should be looking for the suspect. If you want to sit on your ass and play flame games, do it somewhere else. We all need to think positive thoughts about this injured rider and everyone should be searching the streets for this felonious driver. Also the cops don't have the resources. If they did, they wouldn't keep asking for more money and more cops. That's the facts!

sgrant,

That's an interesting viewpoint. I didn't think about it that way.

It's a great idea to assist the police in searching for the suspect. I hope you are successful.

It goes without saying that I hope the cyclist makes a full recovery.

Though I think you're making an incorrect conclusion with the facts you're presenting, you're right, this isn't the place for that discussion, nor for criticizing the police either. Hopefully, you'll take your own advice.

Porsche = immunity

My ex was hit and run by Don Cornelius of Soul Train
It was clearly him in his Rolls and the plate was identified by witnesses.

The Police went so far as to talk to him, but pressed no charges.

He did give monetary compensation to her out of court.

Why don't people understand that if you hit someone and run away, you are committing a terrible offense?

If you were to stay and face the consequences, then it is totally forgivable.

What is the reasoning going on here? Higher insurance rates vs. serious prison time? I just don't get it.

there is a guardian angel on these boards who's ID shall remain anonymous except by his own admission.

WHEN YOU GET HIT. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO GET THE PLATE AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE DRIVER

write the info down IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT wait to see if the driver stops before you do this. write the info in blood, text it to yourself if not to a friend, twitter it. DO EVERYTHING in you power to IMMEDIATELY get this information recorded. Leave a message on someone's machine. Your memory will fade if you wait.

Wow. That was quick. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get a description of the driver. Without that tiny bit of information the case would more than likely be dropped as anyone could have been driving that car at the time of the accident. Great job to everyone.

It seems as more and more people are taking to the streets on their bicycles, whether for financial, physical or "insert any reasonable rationale here", drivers are becoming less and less sympathetic towards us. I think we need to start talking to our friends and family who aren't daily or frequent cyclists, and who depend on their cars more than any other form of transportation, to let them know that they need to be careful of cyclists... that one day that person could very well be said person's brother, cousin, mother, etc.

I think the movement should begin there. Everyone has/knows someone who rides a bicycle.
