my buddy is looking into getting a new bike soon, on a budget and came across this website,

it doesnt say much about the material they use.

thanks tyler,

would he be better off just getting a kilo TT or something.

his budget is crap and he doesnt wanna just wait around checking CL constantly.

he's 6'0, do u have any leads on someone selling a decent bike for cheap?

RBI is right.

These bikes are hi-ten frames, which are heavier/weaker than the chromoly that most steel frames are made of these days.

bikesdirect.com sells a range of fixed gear bikes for about the same price that are much higher quality and have more sizes available.

If he doesn't care about quality and just wants to be able to pick the color of the handlebars and wheels, it might be an OK choice.

I like how on their website they user the phrase: curated for quality, value and aesthetics. Curated? WTF. Now I know there are some bike that qualified to be curated, but crappy bikes like these should say "crappy parts thrown together to make it look cool"

Here is a review of city bikes;http://www.slate.com/id/2225698

The Batavus Brekulen got the best review, I rode one at the Flying Piegon, it was outstanding, absolutely nothing like a beach cruiser. It's pricey but as you will see in the review it's worth every penny. Dutch bikes, good ones, are in a class by themselves, they don't rust or tear your cloths or coat up, the one with 7 gears charge up inclines and hills becasue they have found a way to create forward inertial from the frame weight. This won't be an issue with the Breukelen since it's a light weight aluminum alloy.

I highly recommend you try to locate and test ride the Breukelen.

Happy bike shopping!

I've heard lots of good things about workcycle Azor Oma eight speed bikes, too. Plus I think they will paint them in differnt colors.
http://www.workcycles.com/

But I've never ridden one myself, personally I can't imagine anything better than the Batavus Breukelen, but I hope to test ride an Oma soon just to be sure.

"This won't be an issue with the Breukelen since it's a light weight aluminum alloy."

FWIW: The Batavus Breukulen costs $1,100+ and weighs FORTY SEVEN pounds.

So much for the "lightweight" aluminum frame.

And what's this nonsense about extra weight giving you inertia to go up hills? If that were true, theoretically I should be an amazing climber. Alas, this is not the case.

If you want to commute on something, you'd probably want it to be about 20lbs less, especially if you don't live on the first floor, or might ever have to carry it somewhere.

When you're spending a grand or more, you can get something MUCH nicer, lighter and faster than a Dutch bike.

I guess it is all relative, but to me "on a budget" is not a $1000+ bike! I mean, even when I leave my milllion dollar house and get into my top of the line Mercedes, I still would hesitate to drop $1,000 on anything!

btw...I kid about the house and car....and yeah, what is this claim of inertia of a heavy bike helping me up the hill? I ususally have a tough enough time lugging my fat ass up the hill, much less with a 40+ lbs add on! I'm jus sayin"...

I think "Dutch" style bikes have a aesthetic quality people like. They are nice bikes but can vary in quality from the aforementioned Bikes republic crap to some nice ones that Josef carries at the Flying Pigeon LA.

There is a market for these things and anyone that is interested in these types of bikes should definitely go to the Flying Pigeon and try em out. Josef is the man.

SRSLY dude! my first bike weighed about 47 lbs and carrying it 3 flights of stairs was STUPID hard! Although the cool thing about it was that it was virtually indestructible. Another shitty thing is that i was always left behind when in a group :(

I belive the 8 speed Breukelen is the only one they make in the lightweight aluminum. It costs about 1,200.00 The one I rode had 8 speeds, if it was 47 pounds it sure did not feel like it, it was very smooth did not take much effort to ride.
