irvine (i know). but newport and costa mesa are only a 20 - 30 min bike ride away..tustin/ santa ana is even closer. laguna takes me longer because of the hills. hey, do you know of any streets or path that go along with the 405 or 55??

I would love to, but I have class tonight. There are a couple rides coming up. There is some sort of poker ride in Orange next Thursday. Where about in Irvine are you?

i live around alton and main... just rode out to goathill tavern and back.. am prob gonna go back out there later tonight..
please do tell me about this ride coming up! i'm alright at poker, but i'd rather ride. i just moved here from the rainforests of the west indies via tokyo (but i rode my fixie out there everyday. there was one main road i used daily). so as you could imagine, i can't wait to meet some other fixie riders. weeerd.

NPR TOMOROW : NPR radio will be having a broadcast on Fixed Wheel Bicycles at 9:am . Or see Archive later at NPR.about Fixed Wheel Bicycles on NPR.org the problem is, I don't know which show it is called. Probably "All Things Considered."

damn dood! this fixie thing is really getting big. my X that i moved to tokyo with a couple years ago is suddenly in all these japanese bike magazines now for being the token white dood on a fixie in japan i guess.. we couldn't even find fixie riders when i was in japan '04 to '05! now fixies are in magizines and on the news. damn. well, whatever gets ppls out of their cars, ya know? umm, but i guess ppl in tokyo don't drive cuz the subway is so kickass.. well, they gotta burn off all that american fast food somehow, right? heh heh. thanks for the info on that npr show.

From what I see, few and far between. Even so, there are a few.

The best way to parallel the 405 from Yuppieville is far away from it, Portola Pkwy and the stretch of Irvine Blvd that fills the gap between Sand Canyon and Bake. The best way to parallel the 55 is the Santa Ana "River" bike path. With no brakes, I prefer to use Class I bike paths as much as humanly possible.

path from la to oc? that's exactly what i'm trying to find out..
i'm checking out the details on jeronimo's suggestion above, still considering pch.. and hoping someone fills me in on one of those "class 1" routes.

i live in anaheim and work in culver city. i've never done that ride but i do have a simple route layed out. i would take: lincoln ave which turns into carson st which turns into long beach blvd to firestone blvd to western ave to slauson ave and end at la cienega. it's a little over 30 miles. what part of oc would you be leaving from?
ivanbee02.8.07 - 4:08 pm

ivanbee.. you are RAD.
thank you. I will be coming from irvine.. the coolest place ever.

PCH? It depends on what you mean by "LA." PCH will take you to Long Beach, then Wilmington, then Harbor City, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and so on eventually to Santa Monica and Malibu. It would be a hell of a circuitous way to try to get to downtown, Hollywood, Echo Park, Pasadena or whatever, though.

Ivanbee's route is not very practical at all. Lincoln/Carson is rife with trafffic signals and little to no "breathing room" on the shoulder. It looks good on a map, but those surface streets are a mess in S/E LA County. Try grabbing the SA River trail from Irvine and take PCH or variations using the Class I route along HB/Bolsa Chica. The PCH is not bad through North Orange County. Maybe once at the LA/OC border use the San Gabriel River Class I path to hook up with the best East/West route through Long Beach to get to the LA River Class I path and take that up to the downtown area. The Long Beach people will have the best routing through their area.

Irvine's the coolest place ever? I think I'll have to check it out on my fixie today to see if I'm missing anything since I escaped the boredom of The OC back in '85. Oh, wait, we did have the Cuckoo's Nest for awhile but that wasn't in Irvine.

that was a joke, sweetheart. 'cool' is not the word i would use to describe irvine.
but hey, i've been riding my fixie (practically) on dirt roads in the caribbean for the past year and a half.. so i am actually gratefull for the smooth sprawling roads with bike lanes.. if your coming to irvine and wanna ride, let me know! i haven't met another fixie rider since i lived in tokyo in '05! -mona

That is Irvine's saving grace, nice wide streets. Didn't make it to Irvine because I didn't meet up with Jeronimo until 2:30pm. Maybe next time.
