Hey that looks like fun but you might consider climbing up to Mullholland via, Nicols Canyon or Coldwater. Both of those roads are in much better shape and either one, especially Nicols would be a much safer option than Laurel Canyon.

yeah you're right theres about a few other good ways to get up to Mulholland but Laurel is a bit of fun.

hey-
The Nichols Canyon group ride follows roughly the same route except it heads down Sepulveda to San Vincente. From there you can hit Mandeville Canyon, etc.
I'm doing the Nichols ride tomorrow, leaving silverlake at about 7-7:30 a.m. sharp.
If anybody wants to go with me, post back.

I'd be interested in this ride some other date in the future, too. As I'm dating someone who lives on Laurel Canyon in the valley, and I live near Crescent Heights on the other side of the hill, I was interested in biking Laurel all the way. But after driving it a bunch of times to go see her, I'm pretty freaked out about the lack of shoulder.
Nichols Canyon was mentioned as an alternative. I looked on Google Maps and while I see how to get up on Nichols from Hollywood Blvd, I can't see how to take it to the valley as it appears to dead end:
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=Nichols+Canyon+and+Sunnywood+Lane&csz=Los+Angeles%2C+CA+90046&.intl=us&name=&lat=&lon=&srchtype=a&qty=&new=1&trf=0&getmap=Get+Map
Can I get a hint from my fellow ridazz?

The weather ended up being perfect, and the ride was fucking awesome. We will totally do it again. Sorry for the late posting in the first place but glad to see the extended interest.
Its a tough ride, but we ended up extending it to 100 miles.

Mulholland Massacre #2
Date announced soon. What day do you freaks prefer saturday or sunday? This will most likely be sometime in January or February.
this time 100 miles straight out.
If you easily survived last night you might be cool for this.
If you have a fixed gear borrow a friends road bike, I have one extra (old but decent) road bike to loan out, 62cm though.

hi,im really curious about the mulholland massacre and i have a series of questions(please bear w/me)are helmets required?will it be a fast paced ride?are extra tires really recommended, and why?and finally how long is the ride expected to last?sorry if this a bit too much, but again i am really curious and interested about this ride.thank you.
spazzH50002.12.07 - 12:04 am
reply
no extra tires required. and i dont know how long it will take. We really want to stick together and have fun, take in the scenery. But best to be in tip top shape. luckily in the first 30 miles there are buses to bring you back if you can't hang, but after that theres about 35 miles of gnarlyness. and helmets are not required. but bring your lights. pacific coast highway on the way back can be fucked up.

yeah i'm stoked. all you fools better show up. five guaranteed as of today. and a bunch more say they are going to.
All are welcome. So fear not. Beaters, Jeans, Rookies, Assholes, Nice, Jerks, Punks, Hippies, Spandex, shitty bike, nice bike, ugly, pretty, Welcome.
So the route goes something like this.
la river bike trail to that san fernando bike path. ride all the way across the san fernando valley to topanga, up topanga (we're at about 27 miles now) to mulholland highway. there for like 35 in the mountains out to leo carillo beach, then like 20 something down PCH, dont forget about those rolling hills in malibu.
so we will ride the PCH all the way down to venice blvd, take venice bike lane back to highland, up highland, down the 4SBB to vermont,
vermont we can take all the way to los feliz blvd and take that back to the Mulholland fountain. the entire trip is at around 107 miles. and if you havent ridden this route before it will change your life.
If anybody is feeling in crazy awesome shape we can also ride up to the hollywood sign at the end.
studiodrome02.15.07 - 11:20 am

Also we will be making a stop at the Whole Foods on ventura blvd next to canoga, right before we head up into the mountains.

That route is sick, Roadblock. It makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Thanks again to the mechanical genius, Tony. And thanks to Aaron for the water and drafting. And to everyone else for waiting for my slow, bonked-out self to eat.

yeah man.... that was a mammmoth ass ride. we had some serious delays too due to a bum tire. Tony took the lead and fixed that shit up as best as could be stranded in the middle of no where with no phone service. We were barely half way when the blowout happened. electric tape and 4 tubes later we were on the way....

Thanks to everybody for coming out. There is definitly going to be a number 3. Every ride will be a bit different. Around number 4 or number 5 we will do it in reverse, meaning that last 7 miles of downhill on mulholland highway will be uphill.
Also I cant believe how many people came, its so awesome. we had a super diverse group of riders and we all made it, everybody from Spandex to Metal Heads to Wolfpack to New Yorkers. fucking awesome. Next time we will get up a little earlier and do tune-ups a day or 2 in advance.
Next ride we will focus on getting as many people on their first century as possible.
And I was wrong about one thing, bring as many spare tires as you want.
Thanks to everyone who helped out on this ride, which is everybody who rode. A special thanks to Wolfpack, which gave me the idea for this ride and got me into shape to complete it.
I'm glad we all made it off that PCH in one piece.
We are considering changing the name of the ride from Mulholland Massacre to Bicycle Massacre, because the ride will annihilate your bike. Thanks to Tony for pulling through and helping out with all the Meltdowns.
