CALL FOR ARTWORK - The Really Real Midnight Ridazz No Naysayers / Swarm The Cascades PORTLAND Ride That Is Really Going To Happen

Say, I was just thinking. Hmm? No, it didn't hurt. Why?
Anyway, I was just thinking that when The Really Real Midnight Ridazz No Naysayers / Swarm The Cascades PORTLAND Ride That Is Really Going To Happen happens, and we're up there in Portland riding around with the Portlandians, it would be really sweet if we all could be sporting some kind of conspicuous insignia so that we can recognize and find one another on the street if we get split up, and so that we can kind of "represent" to our Portlandian comrades when we're riding among them.
So I went on to think that the best way to do this would be to make, or cause to be made, some large patches(like the size of those "BIKES ON THE STREET" ones from last year) in a bright, unusual color, with some totally cool artwork and logos and shit commemorating our journey.
Then I realized that I have absolutely no artistic skills.
So I'm putting this call out for you sensitive artist types who are coming along with us. Can somebody out there design us a nice patch with some really ridiculously over-the-top artwork? I was thinking something like a picture of some bees wearing little MR skull t-shirts, incorporated into a larger skull logo, and some lettering along the lines of:
LOS ANGELES MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ
NO NAYSAYERS / SWARM THE CASCADES
PORTLAND RIDE AUGUST 2007
...or some shit. Those are just guidelines, obviously. Can one or more of you out there bang something out for the team, here? I'll cover all the expenses, if any, of having these things made. I just need people who actually have talent to help me produce something worth making.
Like I said, the patches would be at least seven or eight inches wide and tall. Like those big-ass patches you still see some ridazz sporting, big enough to be plastered across a backpack or messenger bag, or safety-pinned to the back of a jacket or vest, or attached to a milk crate... You know what I'm talking about.
Little help here? Hmm?
reply
Oh, and remember that the primary color for these patches should be something really bright and conspicuous--so that we can spot one another at long distances, and so that our awesomeness will be unmistakable to the Portlanders--if that's any help in designing this thing.

angrygirl.com does great printing for t-shirts and patches. This sounds cool.
Fuzzbeast, got any design ideas?

you have to add http:// joeborfo or it wont link off the site.
It sounds like a good idea but I bet there are lots of ridazz with their own printing gear, I've got mine, DIY. You just need to find someone who isn't lazy, buy a few yards of pretty colored fabric, cut, and print.

We could, but let's face it, we won't. That's why I wanted to do this beforehand.

Hooray!
Remember, bright colored background. Like bright yellow (in honor of the bees that we will resemble when we swarm Portland) or safety green.
This is great that nobody is naysaying anymore. Not even CryBaby, poor thing. Remember, for those of you who aren't going: one of you is going to have to babysit him over the weekend. It's going to be hot, and he's going to be cranky. Now, are you
sure you don't want to go?

Well, other than the slogan and the artwork and the color, it's quite good. You're on the right track. Keep 'em coming!

Actually, if this could be put on a patch I would wear it with pride.

too many colors for a patch. patches work best as two toned - line art.

What's with all the rules? "You can't make a patch out of a full-color photo, Russell." "You can't ride a track bike on the street, Russell." "Taking LSD and drinking Robitussin doesn't give you the ability to see through walls, Russell." Fuckin' whatever, man. Just because you guys didn't follow your dreams doesn't mean you have to spit on mine. I WANT A FULL COLOR PATCH OF THAT ADORABLE LOLKITTEN.
I mean, look at him. He's so excited, not just about bike riding, but because he's obviously so pleased with himself for coming up with the idea. Bike riding! Now! Us! Hay guise!
Would that more of us were like that little cat.

how's this?
If it won't work as a patch, I could always color it and we can use it as a spoke card.

They're to leading lines. They help guide you through the image, right to my ass where they would end.
I like Fuzzes fly thing maybe some reworking of the lettering for legibility sake.

Fuzz's is sweet. I agree with Franz about the lettering but i love the concept. I'll gladly throw that on my bad.

Is there any way you can possibly sneak the word "ride" in there at the end of the title (after "Swarm the Cascades")? It seems to want to have the word "ride" at the end.
PC07.19.07 - 3:01 am
reply
In fact, maybe put "ride" where "08.07" is now, and then have the date right below?
That bee is making me weep, it's so beautiful.

haha, thanks guys, I can draw but my design skillz are about as good as a third grader's. Thanks for reworking my lettering franz. yeah, the eyes were a pain in the ass, took me like 3 photos to even get em to show up, they were the last thing I inked, and I literally ran out of ink just before, had to switch to black watercolor while doing them, and my pen just wouldn't pick that up right.

hey guys, can you do one big favor, can you get rid of the tagline saying get the fuck out of the way hippies. I know it's a joke and all (i hope) but it has the potential to be taken the wrong way.....

As Borfo mentioned in the main post we don't have a plan to print them. So I guess I may as well do something I never do and volunteer for responsiblilty... it hurttsss.
I have all the screen printing gear we need, I'll have the cubz help me, sound good MARchusss? There's a fabric store on lincoln I go to, I'll go scout some yellow fabric today.
What does everyone want the patch size to be? Letter size, 8.5x11"?
Cost for 8x11 patch? 2-4 bucks depending on how much the fabric is.
franz07.23.07 - 3:05 pm

I'll help with whatever. Letter size is fine with me.
Joe Borfo07.23.07 - 3:15 pm

Affter breakfast I'm going to look at fabric I'll take my camera and post the results. If you see any you like we can get it.
franz07.24.07 - 3:45 pm

Maybe just a wee bit smaller than letter size, so it can fit on backpacks, messenger bag top straps, back panels of milk crates, etc.
I'll pay for all the patches, so just get whatever fabric looks good and is durable.
PC07.24.07 - 4:13 pm
reply
Alright I found a pretty good thickness of cotton yellow fabric for $22, fairly expensive, but thats because of the thickness. If the fabric is 60" long and 36" (1yd) we can get 24 8x10" patches out of it.
How many do we need?
franz07.25.07 - 4:26 am
reply
To be on the safe side, let's say....mmm, 36? Right now we have about 24 travelazz, but you never know. And it can never hurt to have spares.

YO.... my brothers & the few sistaz going to Portland.... being a former north-westerner, I lived there for 20 years, I was considered, "nearly local"........ there has always been a long standing feeling about people from Cali...
Don't CALIFORNICATE the North west....
There is a lot of hostility because people from Cali have driven up the cost of living, drive like assholes and think the locals are a bunch of lumberjacks and hippies....Now be careful, lumberjacks carry chain saws... some people up there will think "I'm from LA" as more uppity bullshit from the south.... some will get the joke, some won't... so be careful..... you wouldn't wear a shirt riding into south-central saying "I'm white , live with it".... well someone suicidal might....
peace
my heart is still up north, steve

I'm not too worried about it, Steve. If the Zoobombers are anything to go by, Portlandian bike riders have pretty good senses of humor. For a bunch of hippies and lumberjacks.

It's more like this now - if not even more modified. Just letting you know in case you were all still worried about it. Every thing's cool. We were just being silly - (typical uppity southerners).
Peace!
