Thread Box:
Tires??
Thread started by digablesoul at 10.31.07 - 10:47 pm

What tires do you guys ride?? Armadillos... Bontrager Hardcase? I"m looking for something to replace my Kenda front tire and figured tires are something you shouldn't skimp on.... looking for something puncture resistant and maybe 700x28. I don't race... just need an all round tire. Thanks in advance!

I have 2 Continental City Contact tires in a 700x32, but they only measured 28mm after mounting them. Continental sizing runs smaller than advertised. I rode less than 50 miles so there like brand new. They even have a reflective side wall stripe. I paid $60 for both, but will take $30 if you want them. I'm going to get some Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires in a 700x35. They are one of the most puncture resistant tires made. The only draw back is there very heavy and pricey.

cheapest I can find in the size I want. my bike is not a heavy car driven at high speed. Only flats I've gotten were from thorns on the browns creek bike path up by rinaldi & topanga, and that was a couple of years ago, knock on wood...

I would suggest not using a cheap tire in the rear even if you're short of funds. I had two $6 dollar performance 28's I went through the rear in about 1 month before I had a blowout and had to walk to the bikerowave. I replace it with a Conti Gatorskin which is still going well months later with quite a bit of riding. The front performance tire on the otherhand is doing alright, but it's not subjected to emergency skidding etc.

If I could get them cheaper Conti Gatorskins would be my choice for my touring/commuter/work bike.

Riding brakeless puts strain on tires, helps you find the best ones.

Hutchinson top speeds.

not much better tires out there. 700x23, might be a little more narrow than what you were looking for, but the fuckers can take abuse (I was averaging about 2 1/2 months with tons of skidding on em) kevlar folding tire with an extra kevlar strip down the middle (the part that contacts the road).
Only puncture flat I've gotten in la was from a drywall screw that would have taken out a car (my other flats were all pinches or stem pullouts)
at only 25 bucks full price (you can get em on sale from performance or nashbar for like 17 often) they're damn good.

only other tire I've liked as much is the ones I'm running now. vredstein fortezzas. kinda similar, little smoother than the hutchinsons, not quite as durable, but I killed (spottted kevlar threads poking through) my first one in a month with absurd amounts of skidding (I always skid the hell out of my first tire of a new brand, gotta figure out how tough they are). anyting that makes a month in the rear of a brakeless fixed is decent, although I still prefer the hutchinsons. I got these because I was having trouble finding the hutchinsons for a little while, although they seem to be back in stock places again. They're a little pricier (on sale about the same as the hutchinsons' full price) but still a slick, fast tire that has been good on the puncture resistance.

I've taken CHUNKS out of both of these tires and not gotten flats.

I'm pretty into the SOMA New Express tires, which I think they just released in the last year. I have used both 23c and 28c. Long fixie skid life, good flat resistance. ~$35-$40 each.

You can get them in gumwall for the classic look.

I like the Rivendell Ruffy Tuffys too -- 700x28c, but I wouldn't skid 'em. Also ~$40.

Armadillos are damn near flat proof, but they are crappy for skidding if you ride fixed. FooIs tear through those like nuttin'. But I rode 23c and 25c Armadillos for years and never flatted.

Yeah, someone mentioned Continental runs small. They sure do. I've had some Continental Ultra Sports. They're a pain to change out flats. I've busted tire levers trying. I'd stay away from those.

I've been running Michelin Carbons for well over a year now. They last long, take abuse, they fit just right, and you can get some of them in colors or with a color strip. Snazz up your ride. I think Hutchinsons are good too.

I'm with Franz - Conti Gatorskins or Armadillo. I fucking hate riding with some group somewhere and stopping for 3 flats on the way there . . . so I make damn sure I'm not the source of my own hate.

The Hutchinson's I've used seemed vulnerable to sidewall damage.

I have a pair of Bontrager hardcase tires 700x32 for $30 with tubes. Less than 100 miles on them.

I use 28mm Panaracer Paselas with TourGuard and the 28mm Rivendell Ruffy Tuffys with Speedblend on my slower bikes and 25mm Continental Ultra Gatorskins on my faster bike. All seem very durable and roll quite fast, though some have claimed the Ruffys are slow.

I did get a slow flat on the Gatorskins a week ago. I've never flatted on the Paselas or Ruffys.
