underagers
Thread started by KiMS1 at 04.7.09 - 3:28 pm

when i was 14-16 i had a curfew which my parents enforced.

there are so many kids that come on these rides, get fucking wasted and eventually ride back home.

i even saw one drunk kid call his mom around 1AM,

"mom, the rides over. can you pick me up?"

i mean, wtf? are parents more lax nowadays?

to the underagers, explain ur routine and how u go ride and get all fucked up and sneak back to ur room.

if ur parents don't really give a shit, then i guess this is a moot topic.

reply

I was 14-16 a long, long time ago and I stayed out late and fucked around. My dad was 14-16 a long, long time before that and he stayed out late and fucked around. Kids have done that shit since forever. I don't understand why anybody would think it was new.

Ray: At first my mom was HELL-NO about riding then she got used to it. I guess cause he's single, we have a good son-mother reationship, she trusts me. I tell her that this is sorta all I enjoy doing (true) and she knows that if I stay home, I'll bother the fuck out of her.

She's cool with it now, basically if I don't get F's and D's in school and DON'T get arested, then I can do whatever I want. My whole family knows I love bikes.. My room is filled with bikes and parts, I tell my grandma stories of my riding, and I'm trying to get my mom to my be a chrome bag. (SHUT-UP!!). so yeah.. and... I ride everywere. to school, friends houses, store, so if I liberate myself of the need to be given a ride... then there youy go.

i never had a curfew. when i was 14-18 i spent 3 nights week merching for an LA band ftill 1/2 in the morning. my parents didn't care. well they did, but they also trusted me and unless i broke their trust, they allowed it.

but yet again at 23, i still don't drink and i like to think i'm still pretty responsible.

a lot of these kids dont have this sense of mental responsibility, they think they're invincible. but i do like to think theres a couple who could hack it [ chynna, etc. ]

hate to say it, but i really hate the kids who think because they're on these rides with " the older kids" that they're so fucking cool. the kids on 328 gave off some major attitude.

@ PC and Roadblock

no offense but i think things were different when you guys were 14.

when was that? like mid 80's. a lil bird in a bush told me PC's age.

i grew up skateboarding and the latest i was out was around midnight or so. any later than that, either mom or dad would be sitting in the front room waiting for me pissed as all hell.

i used to actually ride for a shop and i would have my team manager call my mom and tell her that i'm good hands. that usually lessened the blows.

@Kim: Yeah, like I said, it was a while ago. But my point is that I don't think things have changed all that much. Otherwise, we would have to posit that we lived in a wild, wide-open society when I was a teenager, which then became a very strict family-oriented society when you were a teenager, which then became a wild, wide-open society again about two years ago. That just doesn't sound very plausible.

What sounds a lot more plausible is that there have always been a certain number of teenage kids who like to stay out late and party, and that they've always had their ways of doing it (I could do pretty much whatever I wanted; some of my friends had to sneak around; some of my other friends just openly violated their parents' rules...I think my dad was part of that last group in his day).

Morals and common sense is what these kids are lacking!!
Hell why I am talking on behalf of a 30+ year old?

i started riding with midnight ridazz last june. I had just graduated highschool so i pretty much demanded freedom even though I was still 17.

its just a power stuggle. for me...my mom was always angry but she had nothing to take away from me... because i paid for my own cell phone, my own clothes, etc. and she's my mom so its not like she would refuse to feed me or something. i respected her just not her rules.

Yeah kims I guess you had a sheltered life. The point is figuring out ways not to come home if your drunk. Gotta u.t.i. we had a safe house up in the hills. Dude's parents were drinkers and would pass out. They were like beverly hill billies. A mess but the coolest parents any kid could have. Every kid that was down with us would crash there. This is weekends of course. We were out all night skatboarding till 3 or 4 am.

I was not into drinking really though... didn't smoke pot yet either, I'm kind of glad I was more or less brain washed not to.

When I started full-on, riding my bike around the desert at 16, my mom and her then, sheriff's deputy boyfriend would usually try to put the clamp around me due to my "could give a shit about school" attitude.

Of course, in November of 2000, a little BB-Gun on the bus incident had me transferred over to the alternative ed.
I got caught up on my HS-grad requirements by January of '01, and I was pretty much off the hook.

If anything, I wasn't really ever much of a drinker, but more of like the "unbound trespasser".
And shooting things with my bb-gun.

I completely agree with madmike, ever since my first Crank Mob I saw that shit. These kids from wherever they rode from, come up with their little "bike gang" looking cool, throwing their skids n shit..
They're just trying to fit in and become acknowledged by you guys, which I totally understand but it's not the right way to do it.

Nevertheless, As Pc pointed out, kids just had different situations some would be allowed to be out that late, some wouldn't but still did it.
It's not like we have bad parents or anything we're just growing up.

Of course, the temporary bike-crews I rolled with when I was 15-18 all fizzled out within 1-2 years after getting their licenses and shit.
Most of them had some slammin' BMX, dirt-jumping skills.

Too bad most of them now are either extremely out-of-shape, got married(or not) and have 5-10 kids, or both.

So, on the other side of things, turned out quite alright compared to the boys who wanted to rocketship up to the next level.

I'm older than most people here, but it was ever thus . . . I don't think things have changed much.

I grew up in a pretty small town, was a "good kid"; didn't start smoking weed & drinking at all until my last year of HS. My younger sister and brother were the rebellious ones and had more conflict with my parents.

Yeah I wonder sometimes, too, but I think for the most part being on these rides is a healthier choice than what a lot of these kids could be getting into these days. We all have our growing & learning process to go through; putting someone under lock & key doesn't usually facilitate it.

I'd rather have the kids on the rides than in shady places doing meth. Not that I want 14-16 yr olds drinking. My lil sis is gonna be 15 next month, and she wants to go on rides with me so bad...but I'm not willing to expose her to the pot-smoking and beer-guzzling. If she kept it kosher, like Sarah/Danya, then it would be cool...but I'm gonna hold out til she's a little bit older. Oh, and there's too many boys. I would freak out about guys hitting on my baby sis just yet. I think maybe parents feel like it's the lesser of evils, like they figure their kids can't get too fucked up and ride a bike. I'm just guessing. I never really had a curfew.

I was 16 in the sixties things weren't that much different.

I just watched my daughter go through the "spending the night at blah blah's house " stage

Yeah...have fun, try not to hurt yourself or anybody else

Alice, as a parent how do you deal with that....you know having your child spend night/s at someone's house when they could be out at someone else's.

I'm just asking cause I know I won't be able to deal with it when I'm a father.

Alfredo...that's a tough question, beyond the scope of this board. If I ever see you at a ride we can have a convo about it.

I have more grey hair now than when she was 2 that's for sure.

At some point you just have to let go and trust that whatever you did when they were younger will kick in on it's own. As far as teaching values, common sense, respect, honesty.

My daughter had a lot of independence, since she skipped two years of high school and worked part time from 15 on...

So at 16 she had a car and her own money.

It's very difficult to watch your kids make their own mistakes, but part of the human process.
