Hey Ridazz!
Does anyone know the bike route from LA to SD?
I'm looking to put some miles on my ol' clunker of a bike and eat me some Pokez nachos!
I am thinking of riding out there the weekend of the 15th.. you know.. once a brutha gets pay-d!
Any help with the route would be appreciated!
and..
things I need to take.. other than a sunny disposition..
Thanks (in advance) ridazz!

here's my path from Irvine to SD (amtrak station to amtrak station). Watch out for that Torrey Pines hill.

Oh man. That looks nuts.
How's riding on the 5 Freeway? I'm more concerned about that.
Looks so much fun, though!!!

Save some strength for Torey pines on the N. end of SD. there are also some moderate ups and downs beginnig before Laguna and stretching a good ways down.
If you plan on riding through the base instead of riding on the 5 fwy, make sure you have a helmet (and lights if at night.) Otherwise, the gaurds will turn you away.
You're looking at 120-140 miles. So, you should have a good breakfast. After about an hour through riding, you should have 2 or 3 bites of a clif bar, or something similar, every fifteem minutes--4 times an hour. So bring like 5 or 6 clif bars, or the equivalent. You may need to stop to recover a bit, so lunch is always an option. But, for these distances...you need to keep your body from depleting glycogen stores from your muscles. So, yeah... a couple bites of an energy bar ar some gel or a part of a banana, 4 times an hour, after about an hour of riding. That should do the trick and keep you from wanting to only eat and sleep once you get down there.
I am somewhat interested in going along with you....I have friends down there who have offered to put me up the next time I ride down.

the 5 freeway is fine and i would never bother doing the extra miles though the base again. Tory Pines is a fun grade, i did it twice last time. have a blast- i'm busy that weekend.

I guess alec would rather spend the exta miles riding up and down Torrey Pines.
But, I think he's right about riding through the base, although I've never been through the base before. On the day before the first time I rode down, I broke the chin clip on my helmet and I didn't wear it on the ride, so they turned me away at the base. After doing the 7ish miles down to Ocaanside on the 5 fwy, I was convinced it was better than riding way west to get through. The shoulder is huge. I've done it that way ever sisnce.
You were great on the Dark Century--up in front the whole time, but I am guessing that you will be doing the SD ride during the day. The added heat and miles and number of traffic light stops will be an added difficulty. Torrey Pines isn't that hard. It's not like a mountain ride (eg. GMR) but if you are going to run out of gas, this will be the place where it happens. There are two ways to get through Torrey Pines. the bike path is pretty steep, but maybe a bit shorter. The road isn't that bad, like alec said.
Good luck. Email me if you want some company.

Thats some good advice Tern!
So far, it's just Mark and I braving the trek. That would be pretty rad if you went with us and showed us the route and how to tackle the hills. We are planning on leaving early Saturday morning, the 15th. Like around 430 A.M. or so.
We plan on riding down there, eating at Pokez, and probably staying the night. We aren't party monsters or anything (Mark is all edge and I'm being good to my liver these days) so we'll probably just be lame and rest until the morning. We're taking the train back.
Dude you're more than welcome to head out with us!
Just let me know how you want to go about meeting up and movin' out.
Rich
