Read-Aloud-Along!
Thread started by Joe Borfo at 04.9.08 - 9:44 am

(Slightly Off-Topic)

This is not necessarily a bicycle event that I am organizing. But, I thought there might be interest to have a ride afterwards? See you all there if you are interested. Read Below -

Read-Aloud-Along!

We came. We saw. We literated.

Come and join us Sunday, April 13 at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles as we reinvent the art of sharing. The public wants to consume culture, and we aim to feed it to ‘em! Here’s the story (no pun intended):

At 1pm we’ll wander casually into B&N, and pick out a book of our own choosing – the Bible, bodice-rippers, C++ programming, French poetry, whatever floats one’s boat. At 1:10, the public readings shall begin, as we all walk the store sharing aloud passages from our chosen books. The reading shall continue until 1:25, or until security throws us out.

EXTRA CREDIT! Participants are encouraged to create at least three bookmarks bearing a special message to consumers to place into random books around the store before the reading begins. Easily done while browsing for your favorite title to titillate the public with!

Please join us afterwards at the Buzz coffee shop 7623 Beverly Blvd, LA 90036 (at the corners of Beverly Blvd and The Grove Dr.).

GETTING THERE:
Parking at The Grove is terrible and costs $$. By public transport, you can take the Metro to the Hollywood and Highland station, then hop on the 217 bus at the northwest corner of Hollywood and Highland Blvds (westbound). Get off at Fairfax and 3th St. The Grove is behind the Farmer’s Market. Or you can find your own route at the handy Los Angeles Metro Authority site: www.metro.net/default.asp

The problem when I engage in these sorts of activities is that I always start laughing in the middle of it. I need to work on my public nuisance poker face.

@hatehills

You can do it! Come one there will be lots of us doing it, really. This isn't the only group I told. It's gonna be fun! Worse thing they can do is kick us out. Let's see if you can hold a straight face. I challenge you!

I plan on riding bikes to this event after we're done -

SUNDAY: 2PM-8PM Heliotrope Village "Bicycle District" Block Party
Track events, polo, ice cream, beer, and debauchery. The Bicycle
Kitchen will be a part of a really dope raffle including a vintage
Falcon Track frame with a full Campy set up. All raffle proceeds will
benefit the Bicycle Kitchen.

Borfo, are you ridng to this? i.e. riding from El Sereno? or from somewhere else? Im going to design some bookmarks for this. And, depending on when I wake up Sunday, I'll try an make it too.

Reverend,

I'm starting out around 11:30 from your house, then we're swinging by Saint Tomatoes casa and riding with him to the grove to be in the book store before 1pm. The Read-Aloud-Along event will only last minutes, I predict. We will then share the experience at the coffee shop listed above, and then those with bikes will ride to BK.

It's just called a "Flash Mob".

Improv Everywhere isn't the first to do this.
However, they have done some amazing things.

This is happening Sunday. 1pm arrive . At 1:10 begin reading a- LOUD!

RECAP:

About 10 People showed, but I didn't get to meet them all. We're there any Ridazz there? I printed up a hundred of those great bookmarks that J. Jonathan made and put them all in books. At 1:10 P.M. the onslaught of readings could be heard from the different sections of this three story compound. I saw and heard Reecy walk by me and then another person. Three kids caught on to the infectious fun and picked up books and started walking around the store too. Tomatoes sauntered around the children's section while reading aloud from 'Mein Kampf' with his fly open. I just picked up some random book on old age, and it just so happened to have Dylan Thomas - Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night at the start of the Chapter. Anna Banana read aloud, VERY LOUD, While riding up and down the escalators. She came all the way from Albuquerque to attend this event.

An employee walked by me in disbelief saying, "What on earth is going on?". During this time, the employees that had been scratching their heads, began to talk to each other. After ten minutes, I was asked to stop reading, and I complied. The other readers were also being approached by various employee staff. Tomatoes and myself were then firmly asked to leave the building and were physically marched out in a line with a staff member out the door. All the while, this kid was proudly still reading aloud and walking behind us. He then continued to march around the store reading with those two other kids, even after I left the building. Nobody stopped the kids from reading out loud!

I don't know who the other readers were, but they started on time and were heard. I then joined up with Tomatoes, Anna, and Reecy for some iced tea at the coffee shop, and we shared our experiences.

I say it was very successful. We were rewarded by all the confused expressions and dropped jaws.
