How come I havent seen these cool bikes on the road yet!!

cus belt driven systems suck and they're expensive.

wouldnt it be more practical to use a geared hub since its belt driven?

apparently their soho model has a geared hub, but I say fuck the rest of the bike, I just want that belt drive mounted onto the nishiki i'm building.

They have one of those in the window at Universal Cycles on Ventura

I have one and its awsome. There are a couple out on the street that I have seen while riding, but since its not a hip brand people will hate and the bike will never catch on.

Bike looks awesome. Maybe ill get me one. Does any one have a good reason why a belt drive would suck?

"what makes belt drive bad?"

You mean aside from having a drivetrain inconsistent with nearly every other bike made in the last hundred years, and for which your local bike shop probably doesn't carry replacement belts the way they do chains, and for which you can't switch out cogs because the belt only comes in one length and can't be adjusted?

Aside from those things, they look pretty cool.

Not $929msrp for a single speed cool, though.

they're bound to go the way of the dodo, kinda like clear beer and crystal pepsi.

it's out, my buddy is writing a review for it. he took it out in one of the RRR ride and had fun with it.

cool gimmick, ill definitely pretend to want to buy one and ride one next time Im at a shop that carries them. Until then I cant really comment, perhaps it IS smootherbetterquieter and the like, but i really havent tried it yet. However, looking at it now it just seems like a weak gimmick.

you want a smoother/better/quieter drivetrain? properly maintain your current one.

Its pretty cool. I have used it before. Quiet, not for fixed gear really. Flats suck, but they suck with a chain and a Nexus, Alfine, or Rohloff. You also must have an expensive dropout and or coupler for putting on a belt.

WURD..

Pretty awesome system if you ask me.

They've been using belt drives on Harleys for years. No grease, so it's much cleaner and quieter. Also virtually no maintenance required... Asking if it's going to break is just silly! Those belts are crazy strong.

Should we bring up shaft drive? Belt drive has been around for a while, just never caught on.

don't forget that they're not metal, there therefore after a while they will snap, as they are rubber.

Meh-tastic. They've tried replacing the chain since it was invented. They keep coming back to it because ... wait for it ... it friggin' works better than anything else.

They are a mix of carbon and kevlar. I would like to see you snap one please.

remember you have to take apart the frame to get the belt on or off.the belt has no master link or whatever.to put the belt on the rear cog it has to pas thru the drive side seat stay . so yea, changing the rear tire would suck.

From what I've seen shaft drive is heavy, expensive, harder to service, and far less efficient than chains. I'm just a bundle of joy, aren't I?

I'm more worried about any amount of slack in this thing.

Stopping on a dime, belt getting stretched, that ackward feeling in the cranks where you're all like, "tha fuck was that?!?!?!?!?"

bentstrider

You don't have to break the chain on a regular single speed to change the tire, why would you need to remove the belt to do so on this?

and judging by 0:50 in the video, he's just got track ends and not some weird and expensive drop out.

Gav

Ok, I don't have the time to educate you here.

You would have to build the frame around the belt or somewherez on the rear drive side triangle you will have to have some kind of separation for the belt to go on.

A chain can break yes, it is made of lots of smaller parts which separate. A belt is made as a solid one piece UNIT, yeah I said UNIT. This means it will rip your leg off rather than break, dont trust me. You could suspend yourself from this thing, on about 10% of it. Its not going to break untill you start cutting through it.

Drive shafts have been around and they are pretty good and clean.

The main problem with these systems is>>>>>>>>>

They are unique and require unique parts and accepting frames. Thats it. Not everyone can afford to go out and buy a $1000 fixed gear let alone hundreds of thousands of them to make this anywhere near mainstream. Go to your closest 50 shops, you might just might see 1, on an employees custom 29/urban/fixed werid bike.
