is it gonna be bike path from ventura to ojai and then 33 (or is it 150, i forget) to santa paula and then like foothill or something back to ventura? ive done something similar, and its around 50 miles.
ruinedbyidiots we’ll be ridding from the Ventura Pier up the board walk on to the river trail into your neck of the woods, following the river trail until it ends on to Bryant St, left on Bryant and a right on the 150 Hwy / E. Ojai Ave. 11 miles into the Hwy 150 with right turn onto Sulpher Mountain Road, to the TOP! And then we’ll back track.
I just got back from the river trail and it started to pour on my way home, there is a creek that drains under part of the actual bike path and if the heavy sprinkles turn into heavy showers on thru Sat/Sun we will have to change the date ; ( there is no other way around this part of the trail and we can’t ride our bikes on Hwy 33.
I will be watching that area of the trail within these next 3 days, but there is chance that we will have to postpone the date?
if you want to skip that washout part of the bike trail, you can take a left when you get to foster park and take casitas vista road to santa ana, and then get back on the bike path at santa ana.
like this
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/detour
the views are alot better on this road. theres some nice green pastures, some cows, an old tressle looking bridge, and the raging rapids of the ventura river.
That alternative looks a lot nicer then swimming with our bikes and getting washed down THE SINK! I will know by Friday and for sure Saturday..........
I have a Sink-ing feeling that this ride is gonna suck (weather-wise). I foresee a SMCM conclusion. Ride for a mile or 2 and end up in a nice warm bar.
Climbing 1500' is just a warm up for Danny and Co. And on a side note, one of the forecasts down here did say snow could drop down to the 2000' foot level.
no, the route goes through ojai and up towards santa paula.
the route youre thinking of goes up towards like taft and bakersfield. they closed the road at the campground thats right after the springs. the tavern has been abandoned for i dont know how long.
fun fact - in 1936 the snow level got down to about 500 ft and the lake across the street from my house froze and people were ice skating on it.
Your probably right but i've got a horrible head cold right now. I got it yesterday. Not gonna be doing any riding this weekend as of now. Really sucks. My legs are jones'in.
Well part of the trail is washed out, right after you pass foster park Dammm!!!......we'll have to take youre route RBI...the Precip today was 20% Sunday its is 90% Dammm!!!
thats actually for the better i think. that part of the trail is so beat up from the water that i sort of hate riding through it. the detour has some hills. danny will love it.
the weather will be terrible.
i will be doing the same route (different start time maybe) next week when the weather is better. you should come out and do it twice!
It’s now changed from rain to suspecting thunder storms for Sunday, all day, the storm kicks off Saturday night at 7PM and does not stop till Sunday at 8PM this route is a narrow road path after the bike trail, riding 34 miles into the hills and mountains, coming down we'll reach speeds of 35 - 40 miles an hour, jeopardizing our safety is the last I want to do, this ride was meant to be enjoyed with spectacular views from blueberry pancakes to END, not rainy clouds ;(
I and others around me have been attempting to raise money for the ALC TEAM Midnight Ridazz and with this minor setback, will allow us to raise more!
When the M.R. A.L.C. Team comes to Ventura County for the RESCHEDULED SINK RIDE you Gents & Gems will not be going back home empty handed!!!

Holy crap... I'm getting nervous about this ride. I'm stoked... but... also really really freaked out. I need to mentally prepare for some serious hills for breakfast.
Be sure to bring plenty of snacks with you on the ride a little exciter energy won’t hurt! Also BRIGHT ATTIRE will help Hwy 150 gets pretty narrow and we’ll need to be seen by those 4wheeled foes AND LOTS OF WATER Ooooo and sun block!!!
No need to fear the climbs Hwy 150 is the easy part Sulphur Mtn Rd will be a pedal pounding encounter!!
RBI!!!!
Where can we eat lunch???I know some places in VTA but Ojai seems suitable!
Lot's of worry over hills, why is this?
They're not that easy to get up, but it doesn't mean the end of the world either.
Just pace yourself going up and try not to kill yourself.
Because you'll always be able to catch the climbers on the other side, for the most part.
Last bout of hill-climbing I've done was on two Juggernaut rides I did a few, months back.
A long, steep one going into Chino, the other one headed up to Chaffey in Rancho.
Other than that, I constantly keep myself prepped by riding through the golf-course neighborhood in Victorville, and the "Mesa" in Hesperia. My 27lb mtb and my 20-30lb messenger bag make the hills enough of a challenge for me not to go weak.
I often look at the "Silent Drill-Team" roadies and wonder if they could pull off the same climbing action when under a load.
if tofu gary comes, we can eat at rainbow bridge. its where pretty much all the ojai rides eat at.
theres also reubens and red barn for burritos. jim and robs for hamburgers. golden moon or chus or erotic thai for something asian. as well as like mcdonalds or wendys or subway. we will figure it out.
i will be coming my peeps. my lovely lady companion will be doing the ride. which support vehicle/truck did you say i could ride in and hang out with yall in?
Is the ride going back to Ojai on the return? I'm not sure I can handle 150 both directions. If I drop back, maybe I could meet the group on the return from Santa Paula.
ahahahaha mike yes it is! holy crap i forgot all about that. i believe we go around the turn he missed, so lets not end up like him and at the bottom of a ravine.
the route is the bike path from ventura to ojai and then main st (hwy 150) through ojai up to sulphur mountain rd. then we turn around and take the same way back.
I used to drve that road from Santa Paula to Ojai when my kid went to Thacher and I remembered it had a few really tight turns and a lot of ups and downs. Yeah, visibility to motorists would be a big deal on that road, it's pretty narrow.
i dont know if they did or not.
if my roadbike was working i would be on it. instead im doing it fixed. there are some hills i will have to walk up, but i dont mind.
So meeting at Crown plaza hotel (little miss sunshine was filmed here) at around 8am if you don't go to breakfast..just making sure...me and my beach cruiser are going to own this route tomorrow!
Absolutely a super fun ride. My dogs are barking but that's the price. Thanks to all who organised, a massively fun group and location. So. Cal. has some bucolic areas!!! RBI,I'll come out ot Ojai anytime!! Thanks again.
Thanks to the O HAI hosts for putting on such a rad and challenging ride! Having RBI on the ride was like having our very own docent except he wasn't a 64 year old empty nester that smelled like Pall Malls and Brute.
Thanks Benny and Co. for the jacuzzinating and pizza time and the support truck and the fluffy pillow shaped dog.
This ride was super fun!
:)
What a great ride and a beutiful day in Ventura-Ojai, Jeebuz this is a beautiful place, I highly recomend this ride, Let's do it again. Thanks S.B.P. RiDa4LiF! we should have done this ride a long time ago. It was a lil challenging,
What an awesome ride. Thanks so much to everyone who organized this & everyone who came out... that was... yeah... holy crap.
Favorite moment #1:
Speeding down the mountain for what was definitely the longest decline EVAR, constantly imagining myself plummeting to my death, smiling like an idiot, thinking "how the fuck did I get UP this??!"
Favorite moment #2:
Danny: Did I miss the exit? How do I get back?
Mark: Just get off and turn around.
Rich: That's what she said.
i will have to check the bikely map, but i think that was close to 2500 feet of climbing. the next time we do the sink ride it will be around 4000 feet of climbing with close to 15 or 16 miles of downhill. coasting at 50mph! you go through the tunnels dustin hoffman drove through in the graduate. this ride will seduce you.
im glad everyone had a good time and no one got hurt. you guys are welcome back anytime.
@Stevo
I think Ledgewood is steeper but this ride was longer climbing - at least for me. WHere where you Stevo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ithink I may have forgotten, nice to meet you Mario and Benny and thanks for helping Mike to realise he can go further, it's in the mind and pacing!!! ANyone going to SD???
no stevo no letters but there was some doplar radar thingy and really great views of the valley and the best orange iv've ever had. I did spot a prius on the downhill, bastard!, super great ride. can't wait to show you pics, I <3 Ojai
Harry, I was doing my own 100 miles of climbing over 2 days. Sepulveda, Stradella, Roscomare, Nichols Cyn, Woodrow WIlson, Mulholland, and all the little hills in Belaire. Fun, fun, fun. Otherwise, woulda been there.
this is the other route.

my road bike will be fixed within the next week or two. let me know when you guys have some free time on the weekend and can come up again. or come for the weekend of april 13th and party at my house, ride bikes, and watch the garrett lemire memorial grand prix. www.glmgp.com
the place with all the rows = the old foster park bowl. they used to have outdoor concerts there back in the day. now its all overgrown and abandoned. studiodrome has some other shots of it in a gallery with a german title (a hymn of wolf and man) on his site.
Damn, I guess I'll have to lay off sending the images to ghost-pics then!!!
But still, that seemed like a heavily, interesting route y'all took.
Any of y'all happen to know of the old, Southern Pacific right-of-way in, or around the area?
My stepdad took us along this some time ago.
I remember seeing some old, livestock-loading docks, a "Petticoat-Juction"-like water-tower.
And what exactly was that fenced-off place supposed to be?
Sink It Shot It (RBI) Mapped it Climbed it Road it Ate it Breezed it, some….smoked it Cruised it Viewed it Drank it Sipped it Sink’ed it dipped it, relaxed it Jacuzzi’ed it chilled it snoozed it PILLOWED IT Eastern Promises, Watched it Lost it Found it Oooooh and Sink’ed'ed'ed IT!
Thanks allot for coming out and up and down (Mike) ALL OF YOU!! I hope Pete’s gave you all the much needed energy,we all ate some nice Sulphur climbing up mid part of the ride and to know that you Gents actually found those Sinks up there,I attempted to cross over those barb wires and was shoed away many times,it’s nice to know that every one feared the downhill more than the uphill or vice versa,to some,RBI hooked it up with the alterative ride back down and the awareness of Ojai ……. Sink II RBI, Sink II??
WHEN THE MR Aids Life Cycle TEAM SHOOTS THRU VENTURA IN JUNE, THERE IS AN OPEN DOOR HERE FOR YOU!!! eat relax and rejuvenate here…..
OooOooh and THX for bringing the party on wheels Zuko I have feeling RBI has a wet dream for you, in the near future????? 4000FEET 15 to 16 miles DOWNHILL!!
Close to 2,400 feet of gain and 59 miles? No wonder I was so damned tired towards the end. Now that I've had a good night's sleep and look back, it was a super ride and a super group of peeps.
