SAVE GRIFFITH PARK
Thread started by Roadblock at 10.16.06 - 12:06 pm

seems the planners and caretakers of Griffith Park against overwhelming opposition are moving forward with turning teh place into another lame ass Shitty Walk parking lot and shopping mall.

fuck that.

the meeting is at 6:30 today if anyone is interested in saving one of our last public parks. the last thing I want to see is another goddamned city walk plopped in the middle of my favorite riding escape.

NOTE:
This morning the Recreation & Parks Department notified the
Working Group that the October 2nd Griffith Park Draft Master Plan
meeting has been moved to October 16th due to Yom Kippur and
Columbus Day. the postponement does not appear on the Rec & Parks web site. Neither does the new meeting date. Rec & Parks has not posted the date of Working Group Master Plan meetings for several months, even though the public asks them to do so at every meeting.

that would suck

I'm on a mailing list of local residents who oppose the plan and do the detective work on these secretive public forum meetings... and this is the notice I got. sorry it seems hastily put together the meeting was not publicized until recently and I have to be at a meeting in 40 minutes so I'm scrambling to let anyoine I know about it.

Suggested "improvements" (with their page numbers from the plan*) include:

Eight multi-level parking structures (5.17-5.19, 5.27)
Two aerial tramways (5.8, 6.6)
Street widenings, such as a 117-foot wide Crystal Springs Promenade (5.5)
Introduction of traffic into the interior of the Park (5.8)
Division of the Park into separate themed "zones" (7.2-7.6)
Creation of a hotel, restaurant, culinary school and sports complex in the Park's interior (6.8, 8.9, 6.25)
Redesign of the 18-hole golf course at the expense of the Zoo Magnet School (6.19)
A commercial pier on the Los Angeles River at the Los Feliz Bridge (6.10)
Additional public-private partnerships and revenue-enhancing schemes (8.9)

*Please note that many of these "improvements" appear multiple times throughout the plan. You can also find them on pages other those listed above.

very interesting meeting.... this coming from a person who actually watches C-Span on a regular basis. but yeah it could become an ugly situation with all these "improvements".

There are certain people on the board representing the good fight. but my cynical side tells me that this might be the beginning of the end for the park as we know it.

Could be, but the commitee report that Bernadette presented tonight was very encouraging in that it strongly contradicted most of the recommendations in the draft report, specifically things like parking structures and aerial tramways, and seeks to mitigate the negative impacts of automobile traffic.

If we can get the contact info for Bernadette, I think it would be a good idea for as many Ridazz as possible to send her messages of support & encouragement. We need to continue to make our voices heard in effective ways.

As one of those however rare ridahs who's played (badly) on the Griffith Park golf courses that are being hated on here, I say get yourself a set of clubs and a tee time and you can walk around 'em all you want.

I golfed once... in Palm springs... had a joint, beers, and a lot of balls. I dont mind the golf course.... I never played on it but I ate some mushrooms with friends and walked and explored it in the middle of the night. shit is wonderous.

anyways... personally I like the park just the way it is. I've been going to that park since I was born. Literally. sadly... nothing is sacred. I'm fucking sick to death of seeing money hungry developers creep up on everything that is part of the public domain. claiming that because it's not profitable it's wrong. how about just keeping things sustainable and leave it at that? why does there have to be profit for it to be "right".

I like what you're saying rollers. I'm going to write Burnadette and I'm going to go to the next meeting. I really wish I would have said something, I did have a lot to say but I wanted to understand the situation better before I speak out. I will next time. I hope others do to. the good news is that as burnadette pointed out, this type of bullshit came up in 1968 and they managed to stop it back then. there ARE enough people around to make these greedy fucks go away - hopefully. eh, I cant help but look at this with a cynical view.

this is the same kind of battle that went down with universal studios and the residents of the hollywood hills when they were building shitty walk. it creeps up. and the majority of people have no say in it because money makes the world go round.

Granted, the forces of big money are strong & relentless, but the reason these meetings are open to the public is so that we can have a voice in the process. Most people think they have better things to do on a Monday night than to drag themselves to some boring meeting, but maybe that's OK in a way, because it allows those who do show up more opportunity to be seen & heard.

I would also suggest that we find ways to join forces with other groups (SaveGriffithPark.org, maybe) that have similar interests as ours and already have an organizational structure set up. By lending our support and forming coalitions we stand a better chance of success.

"Effort is good fortune" . . . if you don't try, don't bitch about it later.

As I was making my way out of Griffith Park last night I caught the interest of an inquisitive coyote. This lil guy turned around when he saw me coming down the hill, came straight at me, then tried to nip at my ankle. Although I was nervous that he was actually going to bite me, any major change to Griffith Park will mean the end of my four-legged friend.

so here's the deal.... the city council are apparently the culprits responsible for even considering this ludacris plan. what we need is to generate signatures to show that the people who are opposed to this are not just local neighbors who oppose development but people from all over the city.... if you don't like the idea of Griffith park becoming a city walk then I urge you to simply sign the petition especially if you are not a local resident...

Is this ride definitely happening? Is there anything we should bring along or know before hand? Thanks for organizing this, much appreciated.
Matt

ps. Wether you like golf or not, it is one of the most environmentally unfriendly things you can do to a plot of land. Paving it over would do less overall damage because of the huge amounts of resources (mainly water) it takes to keep the grass green and soft on a golf course. And, if you'll let me generalize a bit, in my experience of riding hundreds of miles in Griffith Park, it is mostly the dickwads in BMW's and SUV's going to the driving range who drive fast and recklessly. Ideally they would remove both golf courses and let the area go back to being wooded. I know this will never happen, so no need to tell me how impractical that is.

hey. this ride is def happening. I dont want to mis-lead anyone, it's not like we will be marching in and demonstrating or causing change with one ride. the people that are creating the rebuttal plan are generally decent people. we go there to represent cyclists and hikers concerned about changing or eroding what the park is ad getting our voices recorded for public comment. plus it's a fun ride.

last time some really good speakers/cyclists came out. it was great to see that and the panel respected us for being courteous and well spoken.

7:30 meeting time at the fountain Los Feliz and Riverside.

see you there.

if you want to check out the meeting you are certainly encouraged to... but I have yet to witness anyone but myself remain awake during the meeting.... it's like watching C-Span.... but it IS informative and those that want to know should go. otherwise joint the ride (about 5-9 miles) and arrive for public comment.

Hey Roadblock! Thanks again for headin this ride!

I've been doing a lot of talking about this issue. I'm hoping to get at least two new people there! Sitting through a long ass meeting on a Monday night sucks for most people and takes a little effort if it's the start of your week. I think I was home well before 10pm.

HOWEVER!! I really want to encourage everyone to get more people there! The look on some of the faces of the people who were in that meeting when we walked in last month was pretty sweet! They were very glad we showed up. I'd love to see a larger group of cyclists there.

For those people who have been paying attention to this Monthly ride but have not gone it's a very sweet ride! Many questions could be answered by attending this meeting as well as getting a good idea of what kind of rape (to Griffith Park) they are proposing!

As our good friend Roadblock once said, "Let's blaze at the fountain and ride to the massacre"
