Oooh, I rode to work this morning on my go-less-slow bike and I'll be getting outta work around 8:30. I've been warned, but I've never done a hustle ride, so maybe I'll go and see how long I last!

Well, I was warned! But thanks for the escort most of the way home. I missed a light on Western and rolled past Wilshire. With no blinkies in sight I just kept going and took Beverly home to Silver Lake.

Maybe I'll switch my commuting day to Thursday so I can keep training. My work is only a hop and a step from the start. As long as y'all roll east it's cool, I'm heading that way anyway.

I'm beaten tonight but I'll be back. Not next week, I'll be in France, loading up on performance-enhancing drugs!

Where did everyone go? Annie said right on Wilshire so I cut on the sidewalk, after going slowly for two blocks I turned around to come back, I thought maybe another tech issue, but everyone was gone. I went to Silverlake/Echo park to see if anyone was around and met up with John he let me call Spook, but I guess he couldn't hear his phone. After failing at everything else I just went back to the Bikerowave until 2:30 set up my sleeping pad and tried to wait. It was too cold and windy and I couldn't take it anymore so I rolled up Sunset to my friends waiting car.

What was the route, what way did you go out Wilshire/Western, and what time did you get back to the Bikerowave?

franz

hey Franz,

We went to the train station at Wilshire and western and took it to union station. We were outside a while it took forever to get 12 people and 12 bikes into the elevator...we didn't see you come back :/

I got home at 4:30 thanks to cinco de mayo.

09.7.07 - 12:09 pm

Oh dang, I thought that you guys might have stopped at the train station since I didn't see blinkies on Western or Wilshire. I just kept going up Western and went home (to Silver Lake).

Why Union Station?

cabhauler
09.7.07 - 12:24 pm

reply

...union station; because we needed to transfer to the gold line to drop us off in sierra madre and then ride all the way to lax and back to the bikerowave. yay.

i don't know if it was because i was the only female on the ride, but it seemed like a saturday night live interpretation of lord of the flies. it was like observing a science experiment with male monkeys and how the alpha monkeys make the other monkeys do things to be accepted by them and by the group. and just to get a spoke card. hmm... it was an interesting dynamic in which i was glad to be the outside observer.
maybe it's just me and perhaps i am old-fashioned, but i just enjoy a good ol' fast-paced ride without the additional 'pier pressure' shenanigans... fucking hooligans.

Every week I keep thinking "It can't be that good next week." And then its next week.

I think these last 5 rides, at least for me, defined what we're doing. We aren't Wolfpack or Badger Song. I think we are putting the F-U-N in H-U-S-T-L-E...

I have submitted the next five Cubcamp rides' schematics to the CIA and The People's Republic of China for review and approval. They should be back in 6 months, so in the meantime I think we'll just have to ride bikes and make gobbling turkey calls at 25 mph...

Yeah, it's ok to be old-fashioned- Annie is right.
We should switch back to Sharpie.

I wish someone had said were going to the trainstation before we got to the light... not asking to give the entire ride away just the next turn. That was the first Cubcamp I've ever gotten lost on, but I know someone from behind said turn right at W/W.

that's what i also heard and passed along. it wasn't until we stopped at the light that we were instructed my marcoos to cross the street and not buy 'common' tickets from yuppie.

Sorry about the getting broken from the group Franz, I heard the call to go right as well, but slowed down noticing some people were going straight and cutting across the street. I didn't notice that you had kept going down Wilshire until I was over by the train stop, and saw you weren't with us.

When I saw the metro stop I figured that's where we were going as I overheard a rumor that a train might be on the trip. We were there for a while though, waiting up for a few and then stuffing our selves and all our bikes into one elevator like a game of tetris.

About the face paint, my finally deciding to participate was more a wanting to just say fuck it, and be totally weird for a change. I also felt like it was a weird social experiment, but more in the sense of how people on the train and elsewhere would respond to our presence. I've spent a lot of time avoiding the center of attention in life, but every once in a while I'll do something offbeat.

If I were one to just do things for the pier pressure of it, I'm sure I'd have gotten drunk at some point in my life, but I haven't, much to the disappointment of pretty much everyone I know. But I don't care what people think if I don't want to do something.

Back to talking about the ride. It was awesome crazy funness Marcus. Lot's of unexpected turns, like ending up in Pasadena, and meeting up with a few Badgers. Was a great ride home, and a few streets out of the dark century gave me some pleasantly torturous flashbacks. Hitting LAX again was fun, though considerably more chill so early in the morning. Hope you started feeling better after food Richie, you were looking pretty bonked.

Here's a link to the final ride report from my computer, plus an extra mile or so getting back home, as I forgot to hit pause after the Bikerowave.

Interesting view you had of last night, annie. but at the same time, the typical sexist view of black panty annie where it becomes a "man thing" as opposed to a "fun thing". Either way i think we stayed true to the animalistic nature of this week 5 and lord of the flies was a great comparison.

To use franz as an example, i think it's very important for everyone to frequently check behind them not only to make sure they are going the right way, but to look out for their fellow riders.

All sounded pretty nice.
Myself and my friend Mike decided to scout out the rest of the stomping grounds. I felt it better to familiarize myself with the area before getting all "high-horsed" about myself.
My friend Mike(pictured with wheel in hand in above post) is not exactly a cyclist. So this was mainly an all night, slow-cruise for us.
We would've straight murdered him if I had arrived early enough to join you guys on the rollout.
Not to mention the Specialized Rockhopper he was using was not exactly 150%.
The previous owner of that rig let it die a slow/painful death in the backyard near Pismo Beach.
As far as the semi goes, I'm getting a loaner today.
Whoo...hoo cares, it's work.

Anyone planning on doing this 5th week ride in particular, I highly recommend stuffing your face with complex carbohydrates in the days leading up to it. This will be the kind of ride that will drain your reserves and I wouldn't want to see anyone bonk out. Be sure to bring lots of water and snacks, or cash to pick up more along the way.

It is highly encouraged to bring EXTRAS - food water tubes and possibly an extra soul.

As of now it's a possibility that we'll be able to store people extra needs that they can't carry on the ride for them.

So don't hesitate to bring things :D

Anyone that hasnt done a century should read more about doing so. See the LA 2 SD and Dark Century threads and see what others recommend doing in prep.

also
Please don't make this your first Cubcamp ride. Its happened before where someone comes and gets more than they bargained for and they leave, but unfortunately this time actual physical space is limited. That simple.

If it comes to deciding who comes (and spots are unfortunately limited to the amount of RSVP's), the RSVP's will take precedent.
2_DO NOT make this your first Cubcamp ride. Wait a week. period.
3_Know what a century means, do research. EAT EAT EAT, know what to pack, etc. Seriously.
4_This ride will have a LOT of hills, some are tough. Just so you know we are really going to push it this time.
5_This is Cubcamp, a faster-paced ride, so of course bring a solid road-ready bike.
6_Definitely ask questions, thats all I can say for now.

I'm in. Bring on the glory of euphoric pain and suffering. WooOOoo!!! As mentioned several times already. EAT!!! Put food in your face and then REPEAT!!!

Seriously, I ate tons of food in days before the Dark Century, had a big breakfast right after, and was still hungry feeling for days. Fill those carbohydrate reserves, and also as is I don't think as well known, for every gram of carbohydrate energy you store, several grams of water capacity are added to the body, which will add weight quickly, but you will drop it all as you lose hydration on the ride. DRINK DRINK DRINK WATER WATER WATER!!! Drinking lots of water a day or two in advance of a ride will allow body to fill it's maximum internal capacity. YES INTERNAL CAPACITY!!!

GarySe7en
11.14.07 - 7:54 am

reply

Oh yeah, and EAT SNACKS during the ride, I recommend bringing a few on hand to munch on between stops. Even if you fill your maximum INTERNAL CAPACITY of carbohydrate reserves, it will not be enough to last the whole ride, as carb reserves are smaller in capacity then fat reserves, but you need to have carbs to run at full power and keep glucose running to your brain MEATZ.

On a side note, The 50 Century Ride will leave at the same time, but in a completely different group. Yes, two groups. They can ride whatever they want, but I will have a route sheet for the route of Cubcamp 20 - The Victory Lapse. It will be "use at your own discretion." Its an awesome route, and definitely spoke card worthy!

good luck on this ride yall. can't wait to read about the great results. i'm so stoked on all the centuries happening in LA. would do this, but planned for the saturday one as well as the one last 2 mondays ago. legs are not prepped for tomorrow.

i'd like to suggest hammer products for rides over 50 miles. really help to prevent cramping if anyone is worried about that. endurolyte capsules, hammer gel, heed, and cliff bars. have a banana before the ride too.

liquid + carb intake every hour, and a carb rich meal 4 hours before the start.

suggest carb oriented meals starting now.

please post pics! go go go!

If you are worried about the speed, the pace, the distance...well you should be. BUT NEVER FEAR. No cub is left behind...to die. There will be support for those who fall victim to road warriors and pirates such as glass, cars and most of all hipsters.

If you are worried you won't be able to bring everything you think you'll need for tomorrow nights ride (food/water/tools/spare parts) do not worry. Your items will be accomodated in the support vehicle.

Looking forward to an amazing night. See you there!

WhooOOooo. A century of glorious pain and nostalgia for me, riding way the hell out in my old home town. Those epic Chino Hills, 46.5 mph downhill, Yeah! Yay for falling off the side of a concrete embankment and somehow coming out of it with minor scrapes, and bike in perfect shape apart from a scar to the shifter face plate. I think I may invest in a more powerful head light before doing any more unlit trails. Big props to the support crew, brilliant idea Richie. CUBCAMP!!!

Congrats you guys. Glad it went off without incident overall.

Gary, i'm in the market for a better headlight too. Performance has a couple on sale behind the counter. I'm thinking about the MiNewt x2. I think RB had said his only issue was the color balance was a little blue-er than he'd like. My big concern is battery life/charging time. Most seem to need 4-9 hours and you get 2-3.5 hours of use on average it seems. (BTW, i'm referring to the 1-200$ range, haven't looked at the 200+ lights) I guess, if you were doing a century, you'd just turn it on when needed and save the battery, because it wouldn't last the whole night obviously...

It was a fun, fast, hilly ride.

the minewtX1 gets six hours on the lower setting, which is just a hair dimmer than the bright setting. The minewtX2 has the same battery as the X1, so you will have a really short battery life. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Man, I'm definitely coming tonight, but I'll say this:

I don't mind riding fast at night = no issues there. But stupidly dangerous shit? That's what keeps me away from rides. On Cub Camp V we did a night time descent in Frankiin Canyon in the State Park = no street lighting. I thought that was pretty sketch. I'll follow someone with nighttime MTB quality lights.

I've done this decent by my self twice at night. It's pretty steep and dark, but very wide lanes. I like to hang toward the center so my light hits the road reflectors and use those as my guide. I admitted to taking vitamin C tablets. It was for helping get over my cold last week. I don't think that is an illegal substance yet. Oh yeah and I have a cliff bar IV at home so I can have energy pumped into my blood stream before rides. I guess I am doping.

Does that mean I need to mobilize a massive legal case to try and clear my name and accuse the French of incompetence while a dramatic trail unfolds and I get 8 page spreads in Bicycling magazine.

Gary7, write a book, about yourself, and how much the system has forced you into a position of admitting to something that you haven't done, or that someone submitted you to without your knowledge/consent.

That's usually the best way to clear you name.

After that, you'll be home free and can probably go back to using the drugs that you did(not) use.
