Robert Rauschenberg was an inspirational figure to me.
I'm pretty sure he used bicycle parts in some of his early combine works.

Robert Rauschenberg was/is a huge inspiration for me. He was one of the first artists to choreograph a dance/performance art piece during the post-modern movement.

That's really cool, I didn't know he included dance in his repertoire until I read his obit.

I hope he had found in his fear of death also curiosity, as he said drove him through life.

Thank you for posting this. I'm sad to say I did not know of this man before, but now, quite glad to be aware of his life and work. It is this art that affects me most and that I slowly, a couple pieces a year make myself.

I just heard. What a loss. I saw a bunch of his combines about two years ago wen I first moved here. (I was so new to town, I forget where I saw it.) So rad, and such humor in it. He was having fun.

Serious fun.

That exhibit was at MOCA.
A stunning display of most of his early major works, including "Monogram"' a stuffed goat with an auto tire around it's middle.

I saw that one, too.

Yes, that was a great show. Rauschenberg was one of giants of 20th century art.

I became aware of his work when I was in college, but several years later, when I read the book "Painters Painting" I learned that he had been part of a John Cage performance at my high school (Clarkstown HS) in 1955.

Last year at Berlin, There's a small Daimler art gallery by the Potsdamer Arkaden at the Potsdamer Platz where that awesome pic on this thread of those two neon bikes are shown over a fountain. Whenever you get the chance to go to Berlin, you should head to the daimler art gallery (and it's always fun to ride a rent-a-bike through the potsdamer arkaden before the stores close) to see his sculptures there.

What a loss, but what a life he led. He has lived the life of many and I am surprised he has suck around as long as he did.... He was the first to make me realize that anything can be art. Technology can be art. Garbage slapped together can be art. And as he had exhibited, bikes are a beautiful work of art.

He will never be gone. He has created enough work to last forever... and ever... and ever...

Correction. Anybody can slap trash together. R.R. had an expert eye for juxtaposing objects he found on the street into gorgious compositions.
The man had a unique talent, a rare gift.

I was in Berlin last year at Postdamer whachamacalattz, and I couldn't find those damn bike sculptures anywhere!

Joe, I have the location.

It's at the Potsdamer Arkaden (next to the Sony Center) and if you look at the google satellite photo of the link, the square looking thingy with the two patio umbrellas, that's where the neon bike sculpture is.

I feel like having a club mate now.

wow.. just saw this.. I've got my head under a rock apparently..

I feel the same way I did when I found out Shel Silverstein died... but I wasn't ready for him to leave.. but that's selfish of me..

RR was really inspiring to me and also to so many amazing artists and people I know.. Swoon listed him as one of her major inspirations which was what made me check out his stuff in the first place..

He was someone I really really really wanted to meet and give stickers or something to.....
