BUS pass

whos got one? just bought my April bus pass. even though I have a car.... I have become accustomed to using the redline blueline greenline goldline plus my bike to get basically everywhere I need to go. other than moving my damned car to avoid street sweep tix I barely drive that thing. in fact I'm ready to sell and maybe get a motorcycle... maybe not get anything....

I ride the redline 5 days a week with my bike and just buy one-way trip tickets every day. Reason being it's 1.25 per ride, or 2.50 a day, or 12.50 a week, or 50 dollars a month. SO, why the hell does Metro.net charge 62 dollars for a monthly pass?? Do people really ride the Metro more then 2 times a day, to and from work?
F buying a monthly. If they wanted to give me a discount then I would. I guess I understand their logic: they're providing us a speedier opportunity to get on the bus/train and save us one min a day. But for as many people as I see that just jump on, I highly doubt they all have daily/monthly passes. Anyways, I'm usually at the front of the redline train, sometime between 7-8 am going into LA and 5-6 going out.

My old job hooked it up with an annual pass for me... they subsidized all but $102 of it then laid me off :( But I still got the pass and it works! :) I think a regular monthly is like $60 huh? You kno I remeber this old scam my firend and I used to pull, we'd cut a monthly in half then stick it in an ID protector and cover the cut off half with tape and stickers and just flash it real quick that worked for a summer in High School...
You comin' to Polo finally this Sunday?

Why don't you look at this as a small way of supporting public transit? If nobody paid their share the Metro may go the way of the Red Cars. Plenty of people don't pay as it is with the "honor system". I've riden Metro trains for a year now, and not once has anyone asked to see my ticket (which I buy every time). I don't ride frequently enought to buy a monthly pass, but $1.25 a ride seems pretty cheap to me. If you don't like cars or the price of gas, or if you're like me and just enjoy the freedom of cycling and public transit, pay your way on the bus and train and stop complaining.

If they want people to ride, then charge less for the monthly is all I'm saying. I still buy a daily every time (unless it doesn't take my debit card, then I've had to jump it) and I personally feel if they charged less, they might make more. Yes, I said if they charge less, they would make more. My reasoning seems backwards, but at 62 bucks a month, I'm spending more on a monthly ticket then I was even close to spending on gas for my '84 VW GTI back in Michigan. And I was driving about 10 miles a day, close to what I ride now. I think if the cost went down to say, 1 dollar or 35 a month, then more people might actually pay and not risk getting caught for jumping it and they might even get more people to sell their cars because the cost of Metro is less then the cost of gas.

And you've never been checked for a ticket? I've only been riding about 3 months and I've been checked twice at Westlake/Mac Arthur and once at Universal Studio. That's another thing that is crazy to me...put a cop there writing tickets and I'd be very surprised if the city wasn't making money in fines.

i enrolled in 12 units at la city college and got a deal for unlimited metro rides from 2/4/08 till 6/2/08 for $50 and it's awesome (i think they require your enrollment in at least 8 units) -- i def got my money's worth within the first month. i do the bike+bus thing everywhere and even eventually dropped 9 of those 12 units but i still use the pass. damn...i'm such a badass! haha.

It's a conspiracy... i dont want to start my angry ramble on the metropolitan transit authority wrong place wrong time. they are making it harder on us. there are reasons and political motivations to this.
hopefully it will only be shittier until they make that underground new line going to the westside. but when it comes to public transportation in los angleles. im an angry ranting skeptic.

I buy a weekly pass for $17.00. I catch two trains, the Redline to Vermont and Wilshire then the Purple Line to Western. So if I bought the daily, it would be $5.00 round trip a day The weekly pass saves me a few dollars.
I have a car, but I believe we must all do our part to reduce emissions and encourage environmentally-friendly solutions to our transportation needs.

Yo RB! Some people have to buy them day passes. Last I heard that's $5 a day. Let's say someone pays $25 a week (assuming they use the thing 5 times a week). That's $75 in 3 weeks. Way to go monthly pass and you saving a few bucks!
Metro is pretty ridiculous. Not only have they raised prices, they are going to keep going up. They also cut a bunch of lines and service on others. The subway is going to get a fancy gate that is fucking absurd. It's supposed to detract people from taking free rides but we all know how that goes. I think that was $90 million of our tax moneys right there. I could be wrong.
I know we are supposed to be all pro public transit but this shit is ridiculous. I used to ride the metro with my student bus pass but now I just bike where ever it may be. Curse my father for living in Riverside!

I used to buy a day pass for $3 even if I was only going one way.
Ever since the rate hike, I just cycle more, and rarely use public transit.
This thread just re-pissed me off about the whole thing...

Come on up to the desert, where the Bus service will make most of y'all lose your stomach linings.
Buses only run Monday-Saturday, jackshit for service on Sunday, and you're pretty much on your own between 9PM and 630AM.
It could made better and even link up with OmniTrans and Foothill Trans in the IE.
But, the majority of people up here have more love for their four-wheels than they do their own kids.

I'm slowly weening myself off of it. Riding from Burbank down the river path and another few miles to the Metro at Vermont and Sunset only to ride it like 4 stops to MacArthur Park...not very logical, I know but the break is nice and I guess I'm a sucker for supporting a good cause at heart. All of my friends back in Michigan still think I'm crazy for not having a car yet.
"How do you get around?? OMG, that's so crazy! What happens if you get a flat??"
- I fix it.
And I always thought FTW was just a clever spin in WTF. People would use the two interchangeably in FPS games online.

Yes, all the time--if they have to take more than one bus/train to get there. Also note that Metro is in the process of chopping some of their longer lines in half, which means that more and more people will have to take two or more rides to get where they're going.

I ride the bus at least three times a week, often twice a day. I rarely spend more than 8 bucks a week on Metro, so a monthly pass would be a waste of money.
The bike makes the bus useful because you rarely have to take more than two trips a day. The rest you can just ride.

USUALLY, I RIDE THE BUS/TRAIN ABOUT 3 BOARDINGS A DAY, MORE IF I GET TO HIGH OR DRUNK, I ALWAYS HAVE TO ALWAYS HAVE TO CARRY MY BIKE THE LAST 30 FEET 9OR SO IT SEEMS LIKE 300 YARDS), I USE TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 6 BOARDINGS PER DAY TO AND FROM WORK. SHIT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION WORKS FOR ME.

yeah I'm probably at even when it comes to amount of metro trips I take probably a loss now that I got laid off from work... but the one thing thats cool is that I dont have to think about tickets I just get on...
but really MTA are a bunch of morons. they voted to put in gate for that 90 million and give the contract to a private company (of fucking course) if the people that run LA were SMART and not guided by money interests - they would RAISE the gas tax and use it to pay for the rail lines thus reducing traffic. put a gas tax of $.50 on that bitch and use it exclusively to fund light rail and subway systems. oooh man we have dildos and morons and bootlickers and crooks leading this country. fuck republikkkans and fuck democrooks all together they all suck on the same money dick. More gas tax = LESS people would drive, MORE people would walk less fat people LESS pollution less medical burden LESS traffic. LESS greenhouse gasses.... WE NEED MORE GAS TAXES!!!!!!

I agree the gates and the $90 million that will be spent to install them, is a boondoggle and the private company contracted to install the system is probably politically-connected. I am sure bribes and/or payoffs were included in the deal. The MTA board can be bought, for the right price. I really wish the people of Los Angeles could remove the entire MTA board and replace them with real mass transit advocates who will truly work towards developing a comprehensive rail/subway system for Los Angeles without taking bribes/payoffs/etc from private firms looking to loot the city treasury.

I get the monthly pass. Unless you live along the red line, you need to change buses or trains to get downtown, so its very easy to get more than 4 boardings a day. If you throw in one extra round trip a week - taking the red line to Langers for lunch (mmmmm pastratmi) - its a lot cheaper than the day pass.
No gripe about transit in LA would be complete without mentioning Henry Waxman - the guy single handedly stopped the red line from going to Santa Monica in the 1980s. I can't think of any single individual who has done more harm to the quality of life here than him. Next time you're stuck in traffic on Wilshre in the 720/920, think about the little weasel who caused that nightmare.

I am SUPER excited to get my bus pass! Groundwork offers a mega discounted annual pass to employees and I will keep even after I get fired for eating all the yummies! I get it next week! up until i broke my leg i was doing one of two things and time and circumstances affectedmy daily investment decision. I was working in LBC and taking the blue line. i live on normandie and 1st and I would either ride the purple line (wilsh/normandie) to the blue line at 7TH/METRO ctr. If i could mek the purple line with enough time to wait for it and catch the blue on time then i'd go ahead and buy the day pas ($5). but then I if my timing is off and i didn't catch the purple i would bike my ass to DTLA (13amazing minutes - which with wait time and riding time in the train - it adds up to almost the same time) to catch the blue at the pico or grand station. At that piont i was racing the BLUE LINE out of the underground station and on to the pico or grand station. So at that point i was just buying a one way in the morning and a one way at night. I would just bike home from DTLA as well coz that's 2.50, that's 2 tacos and half a can of coke.
