Cyclist suspected of riding bike while drunk suffers head injury
Man, possibly drunk, fell off his bicycle while riding on Valley View Tuesday.

CYPRESS – A man who fell off his bicycle was found unconscious and bleeding from the head Tuesday afternoon.

The man, who was in his late 20s or early 30s, may have been drunk, police said.

Around 2:44 p.m. Tuesday, a passerby called 911 to report a bicycle rider was on the ground in a northbound lane of Valley View Street past Lemon Avenue, police said.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, was treated and taken to the UCI Medical Center in critical condition.

Traffic backed up as northbound Valley View had only one lane open to traffic for several hours, police said

Well, he crashed at almost 3 pm, so he had time to wander over here from Crank Mob.

What the hell is happening in Orange County????
This particular area scares the hell out of me in daylight. Lots of traffic entering and exiting the freeway, and on a bike, you have to traverse the onramp lane and then the off ramp lane as you cross over the freeway. It can be tricky under the best conditions.
This guy was riding with the traffic, so he was in the right place, but had no lights

Bicyclist hit by big rig, pinned under front bumper
The bicyclist was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.
By DENISSE SALAZAR
The Orange County Register

ANAHEIM - A bicyclist was taken to a hospital this morning after he was struck by a semi-truck at Kraemer Boulevard and the 91 freeway off-ramp, police said.

The accident occurred at 5:43 a.m. when the bicyclist was riding southbound along the west curb of Kraemer approaching the eastbound off-ramp of the 91 freeway, said Anaheim traffic investigator Rick Alexander.

The initial investigation revealed the semi-truck was stopped at the off-ramp. As the truck started to accelerate to make a right turn on Kraemer, the bicyclist peddled in front of it, Alexander said.

The bicyclist, who had no head lights, was struck and knocked onto the ground, Alexander said.

"A witness sees this happening and yells at the truck driver to stop, which he does," Alexander said.

The bicyclist was pinned underneath the front bumper of the semi-truck, Alexander said.

He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with serious injuries.

The off-ramp was closed for nearly two hours during the investigation. Kraemer was also closed from La Palma Avenue to Frontera Street.

The investigation is ongoing.

So basically the truck didn't see the guy who had the legal right of way (but no lights) and hit him? That sucks. I bet they're all going to place all blame on the cyclist. Glad it wasn't a lightless ped!

Not driving a truck for at least another year, or until a better company throws me a line.

All I could say though is that this drivers DAC(sort of like a credit reporting agency that lists the credibility of truck drivers) and most likely his H6/MVR is going to be fucked up the ass for quite some time.

Well, whenever a collision with another vehicle involves a tractor-trailer, the one operating the tractor-trailer will be the first to have fingers pointed at them.
USDOT, CHP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, local PD, and not to mention their company's safety department will be all over them like bees on a sugar mound!!!

That's as it should be!

Commercial drivers need to be held to a very high standard--they are professionals carrying many tons of cargo and controlling lots of horsepower, much moreso than even a hummer. They shouldn't make mistakes because they were driving too fast or too tired or just not paying attention. If a commercial driver messes up, all the regulating agencies should be all over them.

That said, as a bicyclist, don't pass on the right when people are making right hand turns. Approaching the intersection get to the left of the cars/trucks making a right hand turn. Take the lane, not the curb.

The truck was merging from the right into the street on the left. The truck had stopped at a stop sign and was proceeding forward.
This particular freeway over pass is very tricky for bikes during daylight hours.
I am an experienced rider, and I get nervous when riding there.
Maybe he didn't see the guy on the bike. It was dark and the bike had no headlight.
We need to light up like a christmas tree and wear reflective clothing when riding solo at night.
That and always assume cars and trucks can't see us.

Not trying to sound racist, but for the seven months I was driving rigs in the ports and railyards, we had plenty of drivers from below the border that weren't quite attuned to the traffic signage and laws of the road up here.

Sadly, alot of them are utilized as patsies for small, "outlaw" mom and pop companies that care more about maximized profits as opposed to safety awards and high DOT ratings.
This and these are the only companies that will also look the other way in regards to accidents.

That's why if anyone's going to drive a rig, stick with the big companies and away from these "no-names".
Last thing you need is a clean plate to get shattered.
