ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR GOOD HILLS (GOOD I MEAN RELATIVELY SAFE), TO TRAIN ON?

reply

depends what area do you live in

I like to climb up to the Griffith Park observatory via the side streets that run parallel to Los Feliz, and then Vermont all the way up to the top. I wouldn't suggest it at night, but mornings are great, and there's little traffic to deal with so long as you stay off of Los Feliz.

+ 1 on Griffith Park if you're in the area. You can do hill repeats all day on the diff. hills there. Then there are Bundy and Mandeville, Nichols Canyon, good hills in Calabasas area...oh and Ojai...etc.

ojai is fine. not on your flatbar singlespeed though. you will kill your wrists.

People ride out there all the time. Just be mindful and perhaps join a group. You can ride from where you are to Ventura then ride out to Casitas Pass and lots of good riding. Team Ventura (an AIDS/Lifecycle traning group) and another group...the name escapes me...ride out of a little parking lot on Main St nearly every weekend a.m.

foothill or telegraph to main in ventura, get on the bike path and go to ojai, then get on the 150 and take that through ojai up the hill towards the summit, eat a burger at the summit, and then continue on the 150 back towards santa paula. its roughly 60 miles.

have to do some homework on team ventura. i only have a single speed . it all sounds good,i know there are places all around me, but most seem to be pretty high level climbs , just wanna start somewhere and work my way up to bigger game.

TRY THIS

yes that took more effort, but it had to be done. hill training on a single speed flat bar, dude just go ride all over LA and before you know it all the 'climbs' will have added up and you'll be the first rider at griffith park the next time livestrong shows up.

Jeff,
Get a geared bike and hit Balcom Canyon road.
I rode to my daughter's home in Santa Paula in July (from Orange County and riding the green line for about 15 miles to LAX), and Balcom was the last climb, coming from Simi Valley. Damn, the last bit was 20 plus degrees and just about had me crying. Total cycled distance for that day, 82 miles.
I don't think you can do it on a single speed without walking.
Single speed, you'll get a good workout riding up the highway to Ojai. The loop to Ojai, Ventura and back to S.P. is about 47 miles, with good climbing between S.P. and Ojai.
Short story, dude, you are surrounded by good roads to climb to you heart's content. Get out and explore.

yess i am surrounded by great hills , out here tho i get a little tense with the one or two drivers that try to hit canyons at night. definitely have to do most during the day, i will be getting to the point where ill make the SP to ojai to Ventura loop, just starting off a bit smaller, something to get used to... but by the responses it seems to just practice on the big stuff till i make it all the way up...so now starting to think differently.

Fargo street is in Silverlake.
Its only about 600 yards, but almost all of it is at 32 percent grade.
The only way I got to the top (once!) during the Feel My Legs event, was with my granny geared mt. bike.
Ride your single speed to the bottom of Fargo and just look up and enjoy the view.

My personal favourite is La Tuna Canyon Rd.
As mentioned above, Nicholls Canyon is good fun too.

(Maybe try some Training Ride for AIDS/LifeCycle out for size, that'll get you climbing reeeal goood.)

Oh and here is that ALC training ride calendar. These generally are put on by other ALC teams and usually include hills.

When Team Midnight Ridazz gets together again we'll start organizing our own rides (which y'all should come to if you wanna climb like demons, our team smokes everyone on the hills on ALC, that's just about all we train on!)

I figured you'd know some of your own places to go living in Santa Paula. I live in LB and ride about 17 miles up to Turnbull Canyon in Whitter. It's an awesome place for hill training and MTB trails. A few of my friends go up there once in a while for some cardio sessions on and off the bikes. I'm gonna try to get some rides going up there. It's a really fun, random spot near East LA that nobody really knows of. It's just beyond Rose Hills (cemetery).
