The county police ticket if you run a light , but the signals don't recognize bikes. So your stuck at a light until a car comes along or you hit the walk button.

What if you walk the bike across? Isn't J-Walking a lesser offense and doesn't go against your driving record, right?

I ride from Pasadena to Glendale almost everyday, there are allot of signals in Pasadena. Besides at 5am there is almost no traffic.

I heard there's a trick where you can put a small piece of magnesium in your shoe (or pedal maybe) and something about that element has a signal equivalent to a lot of steel. Or enough to trigger traffic signals.

if yuo don't mind adding a few grams of weight you can buy a signal magnet. I used one on my Motorcycle for a long time on most all signals

So long as you wait through one full cycle of the light, you are perfectly legal to
safely run the light. CVC says you should treat a malfunctioning traffic light as a stop sign and any signal which doesn't recognize your bike is malfunctioning. I've had cops attempt to write me for it, but none have ever followed through in the face of that explanation. You definitely won't have to pay up in court, so long as you force the officer to write that he either did not watch long enough to know that you waited or witness that he saw you wait for an entire cycle.

If you roll a steel frame, you can tilt the bike frame over the magnet patch on the asphalt and trigger most lights.
That said, I usually turn on the red when its safe to do so.
