I'm Sorry. This thread has nothing to do with bicycle rides. I'm just to lazy to look for a political forum, and I know a lot of you gaise are on the same page as I am.
Regarding the Iraq War and the Bush administration:
I'm not psychic or anything, but I think common sense told me that before the Bush regime and 911 that this country would be facing a downward spiral. I no longer go to protests and demonstrations against the war and the neo-conservative agendas like I used to do way back because nothing has at all has changed except for the fact that most of the people are finally starting to get it. Why did it take so long for everybody to realize what a fracking mess the Bush regime and the interest in invading Iraq would cause for the U.S. in the long run? Why is it now that people finally see the light? I'm just pissed because many people tried to point this out within the last 8 years or more, and not until the shit hit the fan do the majority of people realize how they were wrong. Is there really any hope left for the U.S. and the world? Will Mr. Obama perhaps make a "change" that people are sort of wishing for? Are people really as sheltered, complacent, and ignorant as I now think they are?
I'm really fed up with the state we are in. Aren't you?
My new stance on the future: Change would be great, but I don't feel like anything is really going to happen.
That's the sad thing. I like Obama and although he doesn't have the experience of other past Nominees, I'm willing, at this stage of the game, to try something fresh and new. It certainly can't hurt. But the reality is, its not just up to him and i think the political machine can be manipulated in such a way to keep him from making real progress. Maybe that's a good thing sometimes. But i'm just not holding my breath.
Also, its sad, but some people are so die-hard republican (or democrat for that matter) that it doesn't matter how much the leaders fuck things up, they will still back their Dem or Rep leader.
I'd love to rip it up and start again but realistically you just have to engage the system tactically.
It would be interesting to see if Obama, a candidate who prides himself on being financed by lots of small donations through his Web site, acts any differently than the other presidents who have depended on big corporations and lobbyists for their campaign money.
I also went to the marches early on and I also asked myself why did it take so long for people to realize this war is a stoopid thing and Ruth gave me this answer.
People aren't against war. People are against losing wars.
OUCH. I'm afraid she's right. And what this means is that it's going to happen again. Even the politicians sceptical about the war voted for it so they wouldn't appear less patriotic.
What needs to change is the whole flag waving mentality. Instead of "support our troops", think of all the troops; ours and the perceived enemy's. Our troops our brothers and sisters. The troops on the other country have brothers and sisters too. We are a nation of immigrants. We are the only country who has brothers and sisters all around the world.
What can we do on a personal level in our daily lives?
Cut the macho bullshit. That's all.
I was all depressed about this shit too until I read Mikey Walsh's comment in the Gas price thread

None of this will matter in 4 more years.
Because the Amazon Pleasure Goddesses shall return in their Vibrator Space Vessels from Planet 10 to make all Earth men their nymphomanicial Sex Drones.
Then the Goddesses shall destroy the Earth along with all the Earth women who never put out.
The only oil that will matter then is the baby oil each man will have to apply to his 4 Amazon Mistresses (because there are 4 of them for every male) each and every evening.
Sheesh. Taking the Amazon Pleasure Goddesses into account, it's silly to even discuss this topic!
I don't know if you noticed, but everybody sucks except for us. They need to stop fucking up all the time...
No, srsly, this discussion always heads quickly into US and THEM. We are all on the same spaceship. To me, its all about how you ride this spaceship. I always try to remember this: for every major problem in the world, there is a equal and opposite Fun Action. Actually, I think sometimes Fun Actions can override and erradicate those problems.
About change...This country is in a big mess. Am I allowed to say that? Well I did. However, (maybe I'm just an optimist, but) I really think the change you speak of will inevitably come... it's just that it's taking a lot longer than one might expect because yes, people really do seem to be that sheltered and ignorant. (I'll refrain from going off on a tangent about public education here.) Once it becomes crystal clear to people that there are better ways of doing things, they'll want the change. But right now I think people are still under the impression that this is the best place to be... and... well... is it? I personally don't think so. I mean, I'm fine being here and all because I'm well educated, employed... and pretty much have my shit covered. But social security as a whole is a joke. Even if taxes are a bit higher in Canada at least I could SEE where they were going, (cough... social well-being... not war... cough) and took comfort in knowing my ass is covered no matter who I am, and what happens.
But back to my point. It's like the gas price thing: Nobody cares to CHANGE their lifestyle and drive less, or drive more fuel efficient vehicles until it's suddenly inconvenient for them to do otherwise. Once things get to a certain point (hopefully before hitting rock bottom), and it becomes apparent that it'd be easier to change course rather than to persist in this dead-end direction, people WILL seek the change you're speaking of... and I think it's starting to happen... slooooooowly.
If the only options are being "sheltered, complacent, and ignorant" or taking Noam Chomsky seriously, it's time to give up. ALIEN OVERLORDS! THIS SPACE AVAILABLE!
