Paceline Question

When you are at the front of a paceline, and done with your pull do you flick the elbow of the arm on the side that you are going to swing off, or the one opposite to the direction that you will swing off? I've heard and seen both, but I want a definitive answer. The former makes more sense to me. Either way it's better than my old method of blowing up and pissing off everyone while they go around me.

Standard format is when your done with your pull is to lift your elbow on the side
that your going to pull off on. The side you choose left or right depends on the
groove of the rotation. Often this is determined by crosswinds which goes into the
other aspect of the paceline known as the echilon. Riding just off the side of the rider
in front of you, to protect yourself from the crosswind. Generally though when riding
with inexperienced riders they will tend not to reconize the elbow signaling and follow
you left or right, then when they realize it's there turn they sprint off the front disrupting the flow, Rookie manuver. Also it's good practice to keep your hands on
the bars when your in the front. It's good to point out extream hazzards but often
newbees go overboard pointing out everything and swerving all over in the process.

i flick in the direction that i want the rest of the pack to pass me on. so flick left = pack rides through on my left side.

I knew I'd get a good mix of funny wise-guy answers and real answers. That's why I love MR so much. I think I'll go with Dedicated's advice for now. It seemed like that's what most people were doing on the group ride this morning. I tried to pull the whole time but Rahsaan Bahati all those damn fast people wouldn't let me. They have big V8s and I have a slant-6. I also like the chicken dance idea. I'll try that sometime on a fun ride.

I would love to. I really want to do the double on the 26th of March but I sorely need a new frame (pun intended). My road bike is too small and I can no longer ride long distances without seriously hurting my back. I don't want to push it too far and end up doing some kind of permanent damage. We'll see what my school schedule and bank account have to say about it. The last long ride I did was back in November :(. I've just been training for crits and commuting lately (oh and MR). I would also like to do the Muholland Challenge century again in April I think. That's a beautiful and epic ride if you've never done it.

I'm looking for a steel or titanium frame with a 60 to 63cm seat tube and at least a 60cm top tube.

If you're going to flick or something to indicate, then you flick on the side that you're going to move to.
If the paceline is running smoothly then you should be able to just move slightly to the side and let the next rider through.
