"LA's First "Street Level Bike Safety Campaign"

Its Happening!
After hours of work by lots of different people we are about to see an official City of Los Angeles bike safety campaign.
Unbelievably, down in the corner, this safety poster will carry the logos of Midnight Ridazz, LACBC, LADOT, LAPD, and local/ international Artist/Designer Geoff Mc Fetridge.
Each group played a part in having this come to life.
On Tuesday @ 10 am @ 1st & Main street in DTLA we will officially unveil the poster at a city Bus Shelter at a press conference with the Mayor.
Dozens of ridazz contributed to this project by submitting slogans, we would especially like you to be there. But we need everybody that can make it to show up.
We want to make a great photo op for the newsies so they can start spreading our safety message on the TV machine.
I personally think that education is one of the easiest and least expensive things we can do to make bicycling safer, easier and more fun; so for me this ad which will literally bee seen by 100s of thousands of eyes is a big step in the right direction.
There is a great chance that this will be the first of many to come and I can assure it never would have happened without Midnight Ridazz. Ride on!

Grrr, I will try to get some time off work to swing down with my bike...Why is everything during the week?! I just need to quit working.

Well unfortunately, the news people all work during the day.
If it happens at night, they're like ... "fuck it ... I need some me time".

I will try very hard to be there primarily because:
I think that The Bicycle Safety Campaign is a great thing. :^)
and secondarily because:
I want to be sure to offer my support by BOOING LOUDLY if the mayor starts talking about his idea for a mandatory helmet law. >:^

haha you know... i get the feeling that there is a reverse psychology aspect at play here... if the establishment figures out that we hate the helmet law.... they will push for it harder... haha

Why does the FB invite page request that you bring a helmet? What are you going to do with them?
I'd suggest something like a "Burn Your Draftcard" event but burning styrofoam causes toxic vapors to be produced, but then again, the Celebrity speakers may have already fouled the air by that point.

Oh, since the FB invite page is a LACBC invite, does that also mean that the LACBC also supports the Mayors new love for the helmet manufacturers lobby?

yuck. I think the thinking behind that was to show that bike riders are present... but it can easily be interpreted as support for the mayor's mis-guided law.... I told LACBC to take that comment off...

I own three helmets, and occasionally wear them as well but having someone with as much power and influence as the Mayor making recommendations on subjects which I don't feel he has enough knowledge about just makes me extremely disappointed.
Either that or he's real good at deflecting attention away from more meaningful things that his office could influence.

The Mayor is using reverse psychology on me: I always wear my helmet, but now I want to NOT wear it.
Maybe I'll show up for this with it strapped to my bag.

Precisely what I was thinking. Or maybe show up without a helmet at all (since it is my right to choose).

Possibly true but I feel that if we don't resist, the Mayor will seize the opportunity to push this through. After all, it would be an inexpensive way to make it look like he's dealt with the issue of bicycle safety.

I agree. I think he's just trying to make it look like he is dealing with bicycle safety so that we can't say he hasn't done anything.
But we can say he isn't doing anything worth while.
After his comment from Copenhagen trip he is going to need to put his money where his mouf is.

LACBC does NOT support the helmet law, even though we always suggest that people wear helmets to the events and rides that we sponsor.
After the Summit, when Patrick, Roadblock and I had the opportunity to meet him in person, I specifically told the Mayor NOT to pursue this law, that it is NOT what cyclists need. He is not slotted to be speaking about it on Tuesday,
LACBC is working hard to push it down to the bottom of his to do list.
