i've been riding more often now, and realize that i've become faster than when i first started a couple years ago. I sometimes feel my legs grow a little impatient with the pace of some of the rides when they get slower...
with that said, i spontaneously started corking intersections towards the end of the noche ride and found it satisfying and challenging and ridazz were pretty thankful for the effort. I know i always have been to others who did it for the group.
so... im just curious...has anyone ever been ticketed for corking an intersection during a group ride? or attacked by a motorist? i used to see this practice a lot more than i do now and would like to contribute when i think its lacking.

you can't block an intersection

same as you can't with a bike or a car,

my suggestion, check all the cars, make eye contact, let the driver in the front of the pack know.

once that acknowledgement has been made, move on.

don't hang at the intersection too long, just let the driver know just to sit tight for a second and we'll be out of their way.

the ones behind them can't really do much if the front guy doesnt move.

use the cars as a cork.

its only mind control if ijunes does it

Thank you for corking at the ride!

I've heard about people getting hurt by motorists, and I've seen motorists get pretty angry, but I don't think either of those happen as often as them just letting us through. I've never corked before, but I'm always afraid I'll just end up getting dropped.

Corking is very necessary for large rides. Hopefully those that do this remember to be diplomatic with the motorists, and brave with those wild MTA bus drivers! On the last LACM-PEEPS ride if I hadn't corked the back, like 20 Ridazz would have gotten dropped, not just from the cars crossing but the route getting away so fast. SOmetimes the front of the route needs to get corked too.

^+1 the front of the pack sometimes just gets too hyped and forgets about the people in the back. I usually cork when i see the group starting to spread out.

F'N Halloween ride in SFV we left the 711 and a big group got left behind so i slowed down and corked for the group to catch up. i noticed not a lot of people are corking anymore so i do it when i can and when its necessary.

I've thought the same and actually had drivers yelling at me or inch up towards me. I do my best to either just politely ask them to wait a few minutes for the group to pass or just ignore them and just say thanks when i leave.

Not MR using rent-a-cops, just getting some of the ridazz certified or permitted to cork intersections, I would do the class or apply for the certification if I can find it, so that we can cork and not get tickets. Like the license for marijuana use, the cops look at it and say "ok, go on your way"

I don't know. Let's start a dialogue. Just my opinion, but I don't think we need to get a permit to ride our bikes. Just because it's a large group doesnt mean we should have to get special permission to do so. Maybe there's some flaws in my view. Maybe you are right. But I just don't feel we have to play that game. All we have to do is be safe, sometimes in order to be safe we need to stretch the rules so that it flows better. I'm not naysaying, just throwing out how I feel about it. I can't tell you what not to do. I just don't feel that we have to do that. I'm hoping we can avoid having to get special permission to ride our bikes.

Yea, I kinda agree with ya, I really would prefer not to get certified or whatever, but I also hate looking over my shoulder worrying about getting more tickets or seeing 10 of my friends at LACM lined up against the wall getting tickets for a stupid stop sign. But you could be right, it just might be a slippery slope that takes us all down the wrong road of legalities. Who knows, God please give me sign! Oh, wait am I atheist?

With regard to the funeral procession regulations, the Vehicle Code is pretty specific, although permits aren't necessary. There is one small clause, however: "for the purpose of avoiding a collision" can be interpreted to mean that since the people behind you are speeding along a few feet behind you, you are required to run a light to avoid them rear-ending you." It's not explicit, but it's a *quick, concise and logical argument* which I would make if I got pulled over: "If I had stopped, then these guys behind me would have hit me. I had to keep rolling."

Obedience to Traffic Control Signals
21462. The driver of any vehicle, the person in charge of any animal, any pedestrian, and the motorman of any streetcar shall obey the instructions of any official traffic signal applicable to him and placed as provided by law, unless otherwise directed by a police or traffic officer or when it is necessary for the purpose of avoiding a collision or in case of other emergency, subject to the exemptions granted by Section 21055.

Exemption of Authorized Emergency Vehicles
21055. The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle is exempt from Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 21350), Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 21650), Chapter 4 (commencing with Section 21800), Chapter 5 (commencing with Section 21950), Chapter 6 (commencing with 22100), Chapter 7 (commencing with Section 22348), Chapter 8 (commencing with Section 22450), Chapter 9 (commencing with Section 22500), and Chapter 10 (commencing with Section 22650) of this division, and Article 3 (commencing with Section 38305) and Article 4 (commencing with Section 38312) of Chapter 5 of Division 16.5, under all of the following conditions:

(a) If the vehicle is being driven in response to an emergency call or while engaged in rescue operations or is being used in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law or is responding to, but not returning from, a fire alarm, except that fire department vehicles are exempt whether directly responding to an emergency call or operated from one place to another as rendered desirable or necessary by reason of an emergency call and operated to the scene of the emergency or operated from one fire station to another or to some other location by reason of the emergency call.

(b) If the driver of the vehicle sounds a siren as may be reasonably necessary and the vehicle displays a lighted red lamp visible from the front as a warning to other drivers and pedestrians.

A siren shall not be sounded by an authorized emergency vehicle except when required under this section.

Amended Ch. 1017, Stats. 1977. Effective September 23, 1977 by terms of an urgency clause.

Effect of Exemption
21056. Section 21055 does not relieve the driver of a vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the highway, nor protect him from the consequences of an arbitrary exercise of the privileges granted in that section.
