you should have just hit Choza Mama at Alameda/Olive instead!

Yeah is that place any good? I've never actually been there...
no regrets, though, cuz yeah, that tofu pesto sandwich is the sandwich of the gods.
sorry to have missed you rollers!

If you're asking me about Choza Mama, then I give you a fuck yeah. Me and bananaphone ate there like 32 days in a row back when it opened. I still haven't gotten tired of it, and it's all I can do to keep from going in there every day when I walk to and from work.
toweliesbong04.2.08 - 9:35 pm

really? hmmm... vegetarian friendly, i hope? i'll check it out soon... considering it's 2 blocks away.

Yeah, get some saltado verdura, it's all vegie, probably vegan actually.
For sides for some reason I love their plain boiled potatoes and their white beans.
Their focus is on beef, chicken, and seafood but they do great vegies or tofu for several dishes including the saltado mentioned above.
toweliesbong04.2.08 - 10:16 pm

RBI, I didn't think you were down with vegan food. I imagine you getting down with chicken heads or war pigs or something.

When I'm in town I live there. Seriously, I should start paying rent / work out some kind of monthly flat fee.

im an omnivore, but that means ill eat anything just as long as it tastes good. ive been entertaining the thought of being a pescatarian or something since all i eat when im home is rice and vegetables and maybe some seafood.

hmm... so I was just out for lunch with coworkers in Burbank, and asked if anyone had been to choza mama, and they said it's good but not as good as some Peruvian place on Melrose and Vine called Marios or something...? Anyways, next Burbank lunch date: choza mama!
This thread is soooo not about bicycles.

since we're off topic...
canadienne, do you like hockey?
adrian04.3.08 - 2:07 pm
reply
hah! well why yes, i suppose... i'm not really a big sports fan, but i've been known to enjoy watching a hockey game, if insisted upon. I think I'm obliged to, no? It's in the DNA... along with an over appreciation for real maple syrup, quality beer, and ketchup flavoured potato chips... oh and spelling flavored with a U.
canadienne04.3.08 - 2:14 pm
reply
I hear yah RBI. I'm an omnivore too but I eat at Pure Luck a lot. I like to balance my clean and dirty meals.
Canadians: It's more of a Montreal dish, I'm a big fan of that fries/gravy/cheese curds thing you call poutine.
cabhauler04.3.08 - 2:37 pm
reply
HI HARTWICK! Oh man... poutine...
Canadian ride anyone? Everyone in toques and mittens... drinking moosehead, and listening to nothing but quality music! (no avril lavigne, shenia twain, barenaked ladies or i leave) YEAAAAH!
canadienne04.3.08 - 2:39 pm
reply
well actually... although the REAL DEAL poutine is in montreal, you can get it pretty much anywhere, including my high school cafeteria & a lot of fast food joints. I actually saw it in a diner in L.A. somewhere, except it had the less fun name: fries with gravy and mozzarella.
what I really miss is what i call frozen yogurt, and what you guys call "whaaaa?"
canadienne04.3.08 - 2:44 pm
reply
yeah rbi! you can be in charge of the playlist... as long as you allow me at least a couple of lighter songs... i know they make your bad-ass ears bleed.
canadienne04.3.08 - 2:49 pm
reply
Haha, how about a ride here:
Canadian Cafe
You can call it the "Canucked Up Ride."
Dusty's on Sunset also has poutine.
Does RUSH count as good music?

hey man, I think a little Tom Sawyer is mandatory...

"Tom Sawyer" has so much crossover appeal. Nerds, metalheads, b boys, Judd Apatow fanboys ...
cabhauler04.3.08 - 2:58 pm

hahaha! yeah... don't get me wrong, I'm not a rush fan...
but rbi, you hate maple syrup too... sooooo...

This ain't a music thread, it's a Canadian thread!
cabhauler04.3.08 - 4:07 pm

I thought it was the food thread - I suppose we could talk about Canadian bacon.
I'm omnivorous (although pretty light on the meat) at this point in my life, mainly because I lack the will power to go vegetarian. I could go a long time without eating red meat, but I think I'd miss seafood the most.
Like RBI said, I enjoy what's good and I really enjoy the food (and beer) at Pure Luck.

So......
How do y'all come across these eccentric-sounding, restaurants?
It seems like there's some type of supposedly, non-existent ride where y'all scout out the weirdest-sounding place, with some of the most exotic cuisine.
I get grilled for this all the time, but I seems like the only, fast-food freak within this confederation.
Although, there is this really, tasty Indian-place that sits right across from the gym I go to.
That curry they make there is something else.

L.A. is one of the best food cities in the world, I can say that with confidence. Jonathan Gold helped me find most of these places. The Chowhound message board has been really helpful too.
