Thread Box:
Sublets // Bike Friendly Areas in LA
Thread started by designgutter at 12.30.12 - 11:56 pm

Hi,

First things first -- am really getting excited about biking in LA cause of this site, so, yay!

Am moving to LA from New York in mid-January and wanted to ask advice on bike friendly areas to look for sublets in LA. A friend of mine lives in Loz Feliz so I am centering around there, but I wanted to get ideas for other neighborhoods if i need to broaden my search. I'll be on bike only, so basically just trying to get a sense of places where kids who bike live?

Of course if anyone knows of any sublets, I'd love to hear of those too.

Best
Betsy

Los Feliz is great so is Silverlake Echo Park... Lots of biking stuff hapening in these areas.

Theres highland park and santa monica as well.

Palms will probably have a lot of affordable sublets. A few miles down Venice Blvd and you're at the beach, and the Expo line is right there to take you downtown if you're not up for the ride.

Do you have a workplace you need to get to on a daily basis while here? Because making that commute convenient should, in my opinion, be priority one.

In which case, Los Feliz can be good, given that it will probably mean you are relatively close to the red line (with access to downtown, Hollywood, the Valley). But, if you need to get to the west side for instance, it might not work out so well.

I am pretty happy living in Koreatown, which doesn't have the "hip" amenities of a Silver Lake or Echo Park, but does have the virtue of being far more central. And spicy noodles.

Thanks for all responses so far.

Theroyalacademy -- no, so far don't have a job to get to. That's sort of why I'm asking -- given that I have not set commute yet, trying to pick a centralish area that has the most likelihood to be convenient for my first few months.

los feliz is awesome but if you don't have any money you have to live in koreatown.

santa monica and palms have the same relationship.

are you a westsider or an eastsider??? It's time to choose!!!

No sublets, but try checking Highland Park. There are plenty of houses that are renting single rooms with no real commitment.

Totally agree with what Royalacademy says... Koreatown is fairly central to everything except maybe the west side. 4th st (east west bike route) 7th st (downtown LA bke route) and a few decent north south routes like New Hampshire and oxford will get you to some action. Dont bother with The west side unless you want to be committed to that area, it's pretty isolated - far away from any of LA's true cultural centers though so you arent missing much... being close to the redline is essential IMHO

There is some sense in this thread, but I would take what Brittany says with a grain of salt. There are folks who lay claim to sides, in a tribal sense, and its entertaining for the most part. Some individuals seem to take it seriously and and a result are annoyingly disrespectful to others for silly reasons. Not too many of those, so no real worries there.

So for work, and for maximum exposure, you want to be central... Ktown is a great option for reasons mentioned above, but to be ideally central you want to be further west. I'm near Pan Pacific Park which is great for that. It MR folks could band together one day and overtake Park La Brea and turn it some kind of utopian bike city, and we made Don mayor, we could take over the city in no time. But seriously, it's decent area all around if you can find a deal... but the downside is it can be pricy. Mid City is more affordable, but further from the red line, and I am not sure about sublets there.

If you are looking for a concentration of hip (ie williamsburg or greenpoint) you might not be able to find a place like the ones in NYC, but yeah, it would be the territory sort of between Los Feliz and Silverlake and in pockets thereabouts. I loved Los Feliz because of its proximity to Griffith Park, but from there I found I was going to the west side, like, never.

If you are looking to be westside-ish, but still east enough, I would say Palms is a good suggestion indeed .

Hope this helps in some way, good luck and welcome!

Oh... to answer your question in a basic sense...it might be safe to say that the 'kids who bike' are spread out everywhere! So you can't lose.

It probably should be noted, if not already clear, that "central" is often mostly a state of mind here, depending more on one's own boundaries than the city's.

That's true, we don't have water surrounding us to help define us, New York is an island so they have a central park, and a lower east side. We just have the west side where the coast is. I guess we have a north ridge and a south gate, but I don't know how that helps.

So far my attempt to spark an east side vs west side vs real east side flame war has failed.

Really though, Los Feliz por vida!

I'll take the bait!

WESTSIDE IS THE BEST SIDE

if youre moving from the east coast you know you want to be near the beach;
ktown is a good mid city location because its a straight shot down venice while still being close to the subway. but living in mar vista/culver city/palms/bevwood is even closer and lacks the scummyness of venice beach and population density of ktown. echo park is as close as you are going to get to a williamsburg vibe but its also super far from the ocean. eastside and downtown get way hot in the summer while the westside is cooled by a gentle breeze.

The west is littered with a mutant variation of antelope, called an Angelope. They're fierce little guys who bite, and often, and can and will force you to have their brand of F.U.N. once bitten.

Beasts run in the east, but they don't bite... just hang out at parks consuming herbs.
