ive been almost hit by a bus which ran over a bike
crashed so baddly that i the handle bar gashed my chest
i think i'm running out of luck and need a bicycle helmet
amazon shipping takes a month
where do they sell helmets in los angeles?

Go to Target or Kmart or some shit, that's an easy find, doesn't mean they're good though.

Assuming you have nothing against chain stores, Performance in SM, Wheel World in Culver City, Helen's and I Martin in LA/SM/Venice/WeHo. Performance is probably your cheapest bet. Good luck on the road!

I recommend heating up a Coleman cooler in the oven unti it gets soft, placing it over your dome and hitting it with cold water from the garden hose. Viola! Or a sexy pith helmet to go with a gin.

is ridiculous. So get over it.
Just go to your local bike shop. If you're really concerned about price, you can find some great deals online (i just bought a multi-sport helmet from sierratradingpost.com) but I warn you that helmet sizes are wacky, so at least try some on in a store before you blindly order something online.

there are tons of local bike shops up to chain stores that carry helmets. worth the investment for what it's protecting...

Yeah, please listen to everyone about going to a bike shop and finding a good helmet. Don't listen to my advice, it's stupid. I wasn't serious.

You can get helmets almost anywhere, certainly at any bike shop that isn't lame and those big box all-consumer purposes. O20 has good ones, not too expensive, either.
Whatever you do, don't wait another day!
JUST over a WEEK AGO, I saw a kid T-BONED, INVERTED, and slammed back on the pavement. No helmet. He was super lucky to get away with just some minor brain damage.
SRSLY, DON'T WAIT ANOTHER RIDE.
Plus, I think people look way sexier with helmets. Incentive?

Pretty much all modern helmets meet the same CPSC (consumer product safety commission) standards, and the price is based more on brand name and styling and design rather than the actual effectiveness of the helmet in a crash.
The big box stores actually sell decent helmets (come on, who wouldn't love to sue Wal-Mart?), but if you're looking for other sources, check out helmets.org.

Basically there are two types of bicycle helmets.
The BMX style.
$35.00 at REI
or the racing style.
$25-$125 depending on the brand and style.
The BMX style is a hard helmet with some padding inside. The idea is that it will protect your skull from being cracked open. The down side is that it may hurt when you fall hard, since your head will hit the inside of the helmet. You could walk away with a concussion.
The racing style helmet is mostly hardened foam polystyrene covered with a thin plastic skin. The idea behind it's design is that it crushes on impact. This crushing feature absorbs the blow of a crash instead of your head or neck. You are less likely to receive a concussion or neck injury since the impact of a crash is absorbed by the crushing helmet. Whether you spend $25 or $125 on this type of helmet, all are designed to meet or exceed safety standards. The more expensive ones may look nicer or have more air vents.
Whichever you choose, a helmet is a good investment. Your brain costs far more to fix.

Skateboard shops sell the BMX style helmets for around 20-30 dollars.
Downtown go to Non-Factory skate shop on first and San Pedro. Road helemts are cool too.
You can't ride a bike with a broken skullbone. Wear a helmet and try your hardest to NEVER EVER have to use it.

the biggest difference in price for helmets (non multi-impact bmx style) has to do with venting, the more expensive the helmet is, the more research has gone into trying to use less material to make it lighter and have less material, yet cover the same amount of skull and provide the same amount of safety.
BMX/Skate style helmets are made to take multiple impacts, part of the reason they are not crushable foam. It's possible to fall from a great height in this type of riding, and smacking yo skull on a ramp at the top, then again further down can happen, hence this type of helmet.
Lighter style none multi impact helmets are just that, one good blow and they're gone, which really sucks when you have an expensive helmet, but still 100 bucks is cheaper than 10,000 for surgery and a hospital stay, and an impact at high speeds is better served by the crushable type of helmet, for the factors mentioned in the post above.
As to mirrors, well, I rode with one for a while, and I can't stand them, I'd rather just look over my shoulder. Having a little spot in my vision annoys the fuck out of me. If you are going to get one I'd recommend the type that clips onto a pair of glasses, they stay more stable, and the glue doesn't wear off making them fall off on hot days.
Glasses are a good idea while riding too, clear lenses are cheap, you can get ok ones at a hardware store (safety glasses made to look like sunglasses, but clear, stuff like that). Bugs or dust in your eyes suck when weaving through traffic.
