I'm home schooled until the 25th. It sucks. I'm not learning shit and I spend all my time on the internet.

As for college, if it isn't your thing, don't do it. Don't take AP classes. If you want to say "hey, I have a degree! I'm qualified for your job!" then Do it. These days a degree is the only way to make yourself valid. And jobs are hard to find.

Don't complain about school. We're lucky it's a requirement. Yes, I'm gonna pull the 25 year old mom thing. There are countries with kids in them that BEG for school.

I was happily home-schooled and it's what I'd do for my children. I wouldn't want to put them through the public school processing plants. I went to 6 months of public high-school and it was a horrible experience. This is an issue getting little attention in America, and many states are cracking down on Homeschooling. Public schools are rooted from when Adolph Hitler decided he wanted to control the educating of all children.

"In California, the state's hostile education department is tightening the screws on enterprising parents who have taken the initiative and turned their family rooms into classrooms.

The education department's Nanny State view is that parents may be allowed by the government to "supplement" their own children's education with tutoring at home, but "not substitute the education with uncredentialed home instruction." Local districts are following the cue. Sonoma County and San Diego school officials are distributing memos that declare home schooling illegal.

More than 1.2 million children now call mom and dad their controlling educational authorities. Their overwhelming success -- in academic competition, on national tests, and in college -- poses a mounting threat to the government-run education monopoly and to the public school teachers' unions."

Someone please make a strong case for Hitler revolutionizing the public education system in such a way that the US took it on? The US had public education for a long time before Hitler attempted to use it to brain wash youths. In 12+ yrs of public education, I can't say I was ever brain washed or asked to join a cult or anything of the sort. Public education might not be the best, but it's still a lot better then what a lot of countries have. What exactly is public schooling trying to trick you into believing? Have you ever mentioned this brain washing to your parents?

As for "fuck college", I'm all for that. I need someone to wash my car, serve me fast food, etc. I can't agree with the "college is not for everyone" mentality. College is for everyone, you just have to know what you love to do. If you love riding and fixing bikes and wanna open your own bike shop, might be a good idea to take some accounting and business classes. If you don't know what you love to do, then take the time to find out before wasting your money. Yes, college can be for hipster bike riders too.

Hitler was just used as an example of required attendance to the public school system, that's not to say he started it. American Social Security, public schooling, Medicare, and Medicaid have their ideological roots in German socialism.

So, you're saying required attendance is a bad thing then? I guess I don't see too many faults in the P.E. system that can't be fixed with a little parental support. Can't expect the best of the best when the system doesn't get the funding it really needs.

Though called "National Socialism," the Nazi ideology had very little to do with socialism, per se, but was instead a form of fascism (a very different thing). If you want to talk about socialism, maybe look to Scandinavian countries for a better example.

"So, you're saying required attendance is a bad thing then?"

If the government takes your children away and puts you in jail for home-schooling them, that is a bad thing.

The difference between fascists and socialists is minor, they each inevitably result in the destruction of freedom.

Ima chime in on this one.

Don't take AP classes if its not what you want to do. Don't do anything that you don't want to do. At least graduate, though. You don't gotta like it...you just gotta do it.

After high school, DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. If you don't want to go to college, then be prepared for hard work. There is NOTHING wrong with hard work!

Just like a couple of years of hard work at school will pay off in the long run.

I personally would rather be poor, work hard, but be happy with my life and what I do for a living.

You'll figure it all out.

Thayr's knowledge about "American Social Security, public schooling, Medicare, and Medicaid" is the best argument against home schooling.Unless of course you want to raise your kid to be a forum troll.

Why do you ride with Midnight Ridazz man? That's socialism. They tell you when to start, where to stop and where to go. And it's done on public streets which the socialist government of USA paved with money they stole from hard working Americans. They call it taxes. And why do they even let bikes on the street if the roads are paid with gas taxes? Do bikes pay for gas? Fuckin socialists.

I refuse to ride my bike on the socialist streets. Me and my kids get on our stationary bikes and homeride to homeschool.

Pave your own streets hippies.

i went to public school my whole life. graduated with a 3.4, honor roll student all 4 yrs, got the little silver seal of approval on my diploma...

i did good... because i applied myself. and by apply, i mean i went to a few classes here and there and just did well on the exams. not sure if it's just me but teachers are losing an interest in teaching. i remember when teachers would go the extra mile to make their classes interesting and develop a raport with their students.

it's not the case nowadays.

plus having a degree does not solve every problem... specially not having a job. I've got one and i've got friends with them and where are we right now? not where we expected to be, that's for damn sure.

I think most parents probably are now more so than 20 yrs ago. I could blame a lot of things but simple public awareness and interest in what your kids are doing would solve a lot of issues. You don't need to be able to teach your kids calculus in order to keep him/her educated. Children are a responsibility and people should realize that if a kid drops out of school, it's rarely the kids fault. They're rebelling against the world and conformity and it's very easy for them to strike out against schooling. Big mistake though. And if you can't convince them that a simple high school diploma will make life a lot easier for them, then that's the parents fault.

Kids are stupid. Don't blame them, teach them.

The Finns are too busy paying half the money they make in taxes and committing suicide to complain about their freedom. Most tax dollars here go towards freeways and projects where bicycles are not allowed. It won't matter what your opinion is about about homeschooling if the push to make it illegal in the US succeeds. Bike groups like MR are more like cycling homeschoolers, it's not a state run bike group requiring you to ride where they want, ride want they want and ride how they want.

Was it accidental, or suicidal?

With the bread those guys are bringing home, I'm quite sure his job didn't make him kill himself.

If I was to work on the railroad, I'd prefer track crew, or railroad police if/when I get any prior LEO experience.

As far as getting a degree goes, I suggest to many and to myself to go with something that offers instant employment.

An A/S or B/S in nursing would be pretty good for this, as would any certification involving repair of some type.

There is no stunt union and I pay my SAG health care premiums and have luckily never had to use the service. My point is that I have experienced various forms of education, public, private and home. I know which I would choose for my children and I think it's appalling that our right, our choice, to teach our children may be taken away from us.

As long as you keep your head down, work hard, take care of your family, send your children to the public schools and, most important, don't involve yourself in political dissent against the government, a visit by the Gestapo is very unlikely.

Well, only time I'm going to fully consider getting serious with school is if I find out I have a kid on the way or something.

Other than that, it's just myself I got to fight for right now, so the world of "hard-work", doesn't really feel all that hard at this moment.

Aside from dealing with traffic and the yard rules of some loading/drop facilities, driving a truck is pretty much a walk-in-the-park.

Only reason he's asking for everyone's cash is due to his addiction to those whack-a-mole games at the mall arcade during lunch hour.

He rides with us at night, but lives for this shit while the rest of us our out folding bank!!

thayr, you may have missed it, but the California appeals court reversed its decision on home schooling last week.

I agree that the ruling against home schooling was bullshit, but it was conforming to the letter of the existing law that made home schooling illegal in 1929. It's just that, since the old law has been ignored in practice for so long, it has no teeth. I think that home schooling should be explicitly allowed, but subject to equivalency testing to make sure that home schooled kids are learning at least as much as they would in public schools.

Having grown up in an area (northern Idaho) where a large proportion of the locals were trying to get away from society, I knew plenty of home-schooled kids. Most of them were quite smart, but also prone to spouting lots of unsupported dogma. Most (but not all) of them had highly religious parents who were determined to shield them from conflicting ideas. From my outsider's perspective, home schooling had less to do with freedom of thought than it did with indoctrination. I'm not trying to imply that this is always the case, but I just want to point out that home schooling doesn't necessarily promote freedom of thought, merely thought that is constrained in different ways. A stream of ideas censored by one's parents is not objectively any more free than a stream of ideas censored by the state.

Also, cut'n'pasting from a Michelle Malkin editorial is not quite the indicator of independent thought than you might like to believe.

I tried one semester of high school and i hated it so i left. the next year I just started at junior college when I was 15, and took the CHSPE (california high school proficiency exam) when i was 16. All you gotta do is english, math, and an essay, it's so easy, and you get a high school diploma. I then stayed in junior college for a year and a half and then transferred over to csun, I didn't even need an sat. I graduated from csun with honors in biomedical physics.

When I was a kid i did a year of home schooling for 5th grade. I liked it cause I learned everything I needed to know up until college in that year. Schools are a waste of time, but at least college is interesting. The people there want to learn and they don't treat you like prisoners.

I'm so glad I didn't go through the system the same way as everyone else. Yeah I coulda done it the same as everyone else and gone to some awesome college and led a completely different life, but it was more important to do what made me happy.

My kids are definitely not going to any sort of standard schools or high school. Maybe I'll just take them into the wild and teach them to live from the land, cause that's the most basic survival skill needed, not some silly diploma and a desk job.

@shmuck your myspace says you are a teacher ?!?!?

This thread is really a waste of time.
Those blanket statements are truly idiotic. Every kid is different and every parent is different. You can't use the same program for all.

One great thing about LAUSD that very few people know about, is that it has dozens of different schools with completely different educational philosophies and goals from one another. Even in the same campus there can be four different programs to choose from. There is the Magnet program, there are art programs, science programs, programs with NO HOMEWORK, intensive programs and there is regular school too which is just a place to lock teenagers so that they don't rob your house while you are at work.

Unfortunately the process of finding about all these programs and choosing the right one is somewhat convoluted and time consuming. Even informed parents may make the wrong choice for their kids. They may push for intense academics when the kid is more interested in the arts. Or they may choose an "easy" track which makes smart kids get bored out of their mind. Then in the end the kid will drop out. But that's not the fault of the public school system. It's the fault of the parent forcing the wrong educational choice on their kid.

In my 20+ years as a working adult I've had two successful careers both of which were built on self taught knowledge. But I do credit my education for giving me the tools to sell that self taught knowledge to those who had the money to buy it.

LoL yeah I need to update my myspace. I used to be a teacher. I'm done with that now, but I did do it for about 7 years at a small private school that is in my family's house. Yeah I think I was about 17 when I started teaching and it was funny because some of my students were older than me. I taught math and science and all of my students loved me because all I cared about was making sure they learned something new every day.

Now I work as tech support for a company that makes automatic sperm quality analyzers.

I told you guys I do things different :D

As far as high school goes, do as canadienne says and fucking finish it.
As bad as it is, it's four years of your life where you at least want to walk away with something of value.
My experience wasn't that grand, but despite an isolated BB Gun incident, I hauled ass, grabbed that paper, and like Lot, never looked backed as Sodom burned to the ground!!!(went to church alot as a little kid.)

As far as college goes, I'd say jumping right into that after high-school is kind of ballsy at most.
If you've got well-off parents, or are really smart and earned a ton of sponsorships/scholarships, or went the extra mile to get into a service academy(USAF, USN, US Army, USCG) then take advantage of that unique opportunity and seize the buffet!!!

As for those of us that don't have that, sit on it for as long as you have to, save up some money, then have at it when you know you're ready to take on that commitment.

Then there's my whole take on financial aid and federal student loans, but we'll keep quiet on that.

Study hard boys and girls!!!

No, we still need Jeff to fluff. Our device is just for testing sperm motility, concentration, and morphology. It's pretty cool cause it takes about 2 minutes to get the results and before the manual way had to be done by looking under a microscope and doing a lot of pain in the ass counting and guessing for about an hour.
