Yeah! Something else ride!
Someone should post it so more people come.
Hypothetically speaking here~
The something else ride could start at Windward Circle. SMCM usually stops there at some point!
Just hypothetical, no jumbling of pants.
jonnyboy07.31.08 - 2:16 pm

We should post the ride and have a well-defined start point and location. I know a couple of people who can't make it to SMCM but might come to the something else ride.

since Something Else is after Santa Monica Critical Mass, I think it should start in Santa Monica. I'm voting for the traveling rings because it's NEAR the start point for SMCM, but rather than being the same, it's Something Else!
I'm going to hijack HH's Something Else Ride thread. Direct your opinions there.

How about The Brewery? If CM ends as early as it usually does, we could make it by last call pretty easily.

How about a bar hop from SM to DT. There's gotta be some choice spots along the way. Kinda like BarChopz, but not in the freakin valley
Eric Hair07.31.08 - 6:43 pm
reply
Okay, so where should we start?
14 Below to The Brewery downtown?
Undercover Bob07.31.08 - 8:29 pm
reply
I have no idea.
I'm not familiar with that area. Bar wise at least.
We'll figure it out as we roll. AT are you still involved in SMCM? I know you know some places.
Eric Hair07.31.08 - 8:40 pm
reply
i dunno, gais.. i don't want to be a naysayer.. but i think you should come up with 2 plans.
1. 14 below to dowtown brewery
and
2. the something else ride
there are a few people not 21 and a lot of people that enjoy staying on the west side. SMCM is huge and brings in a lot of people.
I love the start of the ride at the rings..
the 14 below to the brewery is such a great idea, however, i would like that as a ride in and of itself. where we start west early and head east -- we can pick people up after work and just let the crowd get bigger and bigger..
anywho.. just throwing it out there.. but you know i'll go anywhere and do anything.. so throw so!
bondink07.31.08 - 8:45 pm
reply
I wouldn't worry about the 21+ factor.
Usually it's 30% in the bar/club, and 70% on the street/parking lot.
We need the locals on the barhop so we know where to go........i guess.........we can always fake it
Eric Hair07.31.08 - 10:40 pm
reply
My vote goes for the rings!!!
Someone needs to post it up asap cause shit is gonna be here before we know it.
Bob's suggestion seems most logical with starting the "something else ride" close to the start of SMCM. Just my opinion though!
jonnyboy07.31.08 - 11:04 pm
reply
I thought the idea was that the Something Else Ride would just start wherever another ride was ending but people still want to ride.
Having a starting point makes it just another ride, not something else.
alec08.1.08 - 6:37 am

what are 'the rings'? is this a LOTR reference?
kurtz08.1.08 - 6:46 am
reply
@alec
Yeah there is definitely that aspect too. it takes away some of the mystery when you have a start point. Conversely though, I don't not doubt that there would be people who wanted to go to the Something Else ride that either couldn't make it to SMCM or don't go to SMCM.
If some people can decide on a start point, my guess is more people would be ponying up and revitalizing the total # of riders mid-way through the night. AKA the people's ride.
jonnyboy08.1.08 - 7:47 am
reply
I also "don't not doubt" that the rings would be cool
Aren't the rings like just south of the SM pier right on the bike path?
jonnyboy08.1.08 - 7:48 am
reply
i know nothing.. however, i agree with jonnyboy about ridazz showing up for TSR and completely missing SMCM.. if i wasn't going tonight .. for reasons .. i probably wouldn't be able to make it with it being so tight on time from when i get off work.
the traveling rings (LOTR, hehehe) are located south of the Santa Monica Pier and just north of Shutters.. they are actually right across from a bike rental place, no lie..
anywho.. no matter where we end up.. it's going to be a fun night! I will have my camera so don't forget to jump into a picture or three..

The Something Else Ride = TSER
bondink08.1.08 - 9:34 am
reply
We should go ahead and post it up while it's still early in the day.
Can you give me a google map location of these rings?
Also what should the start time be? Meet at 9, ride at 10?
jonnyboy08.1.08 - 9:34 am
reply
I agree with the other Al that there shouldn't be a start point. The start of the 1st Something Else was in spontaneous recognition that people still wanted to ride, but that a certain AT was sick and tired of the CM style route choices and that this AT wanted to run it like boot camp.
All the people who want to meet Something Else and not go to SMCM can use their phones to get in touch. The kind of peeps who would do that are frequent riders who definitely will know someone on the ride. Plus, ephemerae will probably Twitter cast the location of the ride on Westsidazz.
Don't listen to jonnyboy - he speaks with authority about LACM and the People's Ride because he skipped out on VCM = traitor!
Alex Thompson08.1.08 - 9:41 am

hmm.. i agree..
I believe knittens asked Undercover Bob to handle this one tonight as he was getting a "penial enlargement" -- and i know UCB will be popping on here soon, so let's wait a bit and see what he's throwing our way before we jump the gun.. eh?
bondink08.1.08 - 9:42 am
reply
booooo
I was already having fun making the art for TSER
jonnyboy08.1.08 - 9:45 am
reply
I see we've touched on a somewhat complicated can of worms here. I don't think that the rings should be the start point for the something else ride since TSER will start wherever SMCM ends. However, as jonnyboy said, I do know that a lot of people will not be able to get to SMCM by it's start time and will want to join in for TSER. I also know that some people will want to return to the start point of SMCM after it finishes. Combining those two points with the fact that the rings are lots of fun for everyone leads to the logical conclusion that we ought to make it a stop for TSER.
So if you get separated from the rest of the ride after SMCM and you want to ride some more; if you get off work late and can't make SMCM; if your body is grossly out of proportion with massive thighs and undeveloped upper body strength that you'd like to even out; if you're still settling a grudge with that kid who used to make fun of you for not being able to get across the monkey bars on the playground; if you like climbing trees, building forts and washing bikes in the carwash-- you could meet TSER at the traveling rings south of the pier and continue on with us from there.
When we will arrive and whether it will be the first stop or not, has yet to be determined (and depends on several unpredictable variables) so calling a friend to see where we are is still advised.

Now on to a more important subject: SMCM
Inspired by the drag races last night and Knittens' surgery, what if SMCM was Ladies' Night this week? Let the ladies head up the pack 'til they decide we've reached our first stop? Would anyone be opposed to this? I think it would be fun.

no no, something else ride is def after SMCM. I just thought it might be fun to try and let the ladies head up the Mass. Might encourage some more female participation in CM rides and present a slightly confusing image to the LE. If everyone is morally opposed to the idea then it clearly won't work but I think it would make for a memorable CM experience

I just wanted to make sure that nobody would be upset by the notion is all. Some people are very militant about CM rides having no leadership structure so I wondered if people would take offense to letting the girls spearhead the pack.

The spontaneous nature of this Critical Mass took us deep into Santa Monica. With the massive SMPD response, it was a good thing that we stopped at red lights and stop signs.
How many tickets were issued? Someone said 14.

We did learn a valuable lesson. We confused them. As the ride traversed through the neighborhoods, the cops chased us from one street to the next. Sometimes they couldn't keep up. They burned a lot of gas tonight. Imagine how much it cost to have 15 cops chasing around bicyclists. We did no harm. We just rode our bikes.
Some people said we should do this every time. Bleed them. Let them burn gas and pay 15-20 cops to chase us as we zig zag through the neighborhoods. Eventually the taxpayers are going to get the bill, and they won't be happy about it.
It will be up to Alex and his "core elite", all of which were out of town tonight. You guys should stagger your vacations.

I remember there being zero police presence at the June SMCM just two months ago (although that seemed strange at the time). Why were there so many this time and why were they so persistent? Did you guys do something on the 4th of July ride?
On a more posotive note, there were a few bicycle cops among them. Let them chase us with bicycles!
wiz_vanmeter08.2.08 - 2:20 am
reply
At a dozen plus tickets, it will be interesting to see who's bleeding who.
It will be interesting to see if the city is capable of being practical, as I don't think that the number of officers following us around tonight was necessarily the best use of police resources or the best way to promote the City of Santa Monica as a place you can comfortably get around in without a car.
JB08.2.08 - 2:56 am
reply
I urge everyone who got a ticket take the following steps from this past post.
The object is to postpone the process as long as possible and to give the cops as many opportunities to screw up as you can. Everything, except a final court appearence, if necessary, can be done online or on the phone. So, here is the system: The most important part is that you follow up and not be the one to miss a deadline.
First, a week before your trial date get an extension. This will put you back 3 months from the ticket date. Second, a week before your extended trial date request a Trial by Declaration. The court will send you the paperwork and give you a deadline. This will put you back about 5 months from the ticket date. Now. remember, a cop gets paid time and a half to go to court. He gets paid nothing to fill out his own Trial by Declaration. If he doesn't send his paperwork in, you win. I've won here about a third of the time. Your Trial by Declaration should be as thoroughly full of shit as you can write it.
Now, if you lose here they will send you a notice. When you get that note and if it says you lost, NEXT is request a TRIAL DE NOVO. This is a whole new trial in court that they will give you just for the asking. This will put you about 7 months from the date of the original citation. AND NO COP EVER SHOWED UP FOR THAT OLD OF A CITATION (3x). Good luck!

I'll have something up on Streetsblog Monday morning, but that was really a WTF with the police. Santa Monica, which considers itself this progressive enclave ralles the militia to hand out nuisance tickets while their cops violate traffic laws left and right to try and keep up with those crazy kids on bikes. Meanwhile in LA people in the bars an drestaraunts cheer us like returning heroes.
Hey, if Santa Monica doesn't want me to spend my money there, I'm cool with that.

this may have been done already.. or not
this could be a good idea, dunno
but what if next month's SMCM we have the group split into 4 separate, smaller groups and head off in different directions? Of course stopping at red lights and stop signs and staying to the right, etc. Then we could have a meeting point and then as a huge group ride back down through SM.
Only reason why I bring this up was how much fun it was when we would say "right turn" and the cops would get into the left hand turn lane adjacent from us, and as the light turned green we would head straight. This was Roadblock's ingenious idea and it was too fun.
just throwing that out there..

I want to point out with tickets. It's 7 court days I think, so affectively, it's 9 days. As I recall. Not for sure. Make sure you check. It oculd be 10 days. I missed that, but I did however get my trial by declaration in time, so I shall see what happens.
Jaz08.2.08 - 9:52 pm

hey bondink, i had the same idea earlier at LAFXD. here's what i suggested:
1. split up into 2-4 smaller rides and ride in different directions, crossing paths along the way
2. periodically get off of our bikes, on very well traveled streets and take over the crosswalks. it sends a mixed message, as cyclists are NOT pedestrians. but, i can just see the officers exploding with anger, when all along wilshire boulevard, cars are stopping for pedestrians simultaneously on several blocks. this would create a traffic nightmare. same with main street.
it shouldn't be too difficult for them to see that by impeding our progress, they are creating a traffic problem far greater than the one we pose by corking intersections so we can safely and fluidly travel through their city.
we should stay on well-traveled (high-profile) roads in santa monica, especially main street. SMPD are less likely to harass us with hundreds of spectators watching from nearby shops and restaurants. maybe we should do a main street ride, simply riding the loop from navy up to the (fucking) police station up near colorado.
