REST IN PEACE DON. TRULY A GREAT TALENT TO THE VO INDUSTRY. I got to talk this great man on the phone once because i was there assisting in the vo session via LSDN. inside an audio studio. I got to hear him screw around and fuck with the producers. and I know first that the cockiest and most anal retentive of producers can be damn right fucking annoying. it was great to see his sense of humor while still maintaining a professional demeanor. he'd curse alright but he'd turn his anger and frustrations to humorous misreads to get back at them. i could not stop laughing in the studio that day. here in this shot of him you can see his sense of humor. brilliant talent this guy was and an idol and hero to me.
REST IN PEACE DON.
a little fact about DON and the lucrative side to this career:
Don had a poshed out caboose car that he would latch on to trains (frieght) that would hall him around the country and beyond.
he could afford this lifestyle coz he got paid thousands of bucks an hour to read VO wether the VO was used or not. the average rate for most of these guys these days (if the guy is really good [tv pay]) is from 800 - 1000 bucks for a 1hour booked session even if the session is just 30.
You are not alone... I work for a movie trailer house so we're all pretty bummed about it too. My bosses especially, who I suppose knew him personally.
You know I used to make fun of that damn voice, cause it was always attached to stupid mindless empty blockbuster movies. But now that I know it has been a staple of filmdom for decades I feel sad that it has been silenced forever. RIP Mr. LaFontaine, heartfelt wishes to your family and friends!!!!!!!!!
