Bike Polo: Game on! Sunday, August 18
Thread started by mvidal at 08.2.07 - 10:30 pm

We've got a bike polo game planned for Sunday, August 18, at Pan Pacific park at 3pm. There are at least four people that are coming for sure, and hopefully more. The more the merrier.

All you need is a bike. Any bike will work but it may get beat up. We have enough mallets for a game of 3 on 3, and we can rotate people or teams in and out. Bring more mallets if you have them.

If people are stoked, we'll play for three hours or more. Come whenever.

Let's try to get a regular thing going. I have started an email list to work out the details: weeklygames@labikepolo.org. Email me at mgvidal@gmail.com to join the list. And we can build a wiki-site on space I have: http://labikepolo.org/ (it's just a place holder right now). If better place will work better after the 18th at Pan Pacific, we can work that out on the list.

Join the list even if you can't make it on Sunday the 18th.

Word.

I'm definitely interested in beating everyone in bike polo, unfortunately I should be in Portland that day. But put me down as another person who will play in the future.

Hi, Matt. I'm Jared's friend, Tattiya. You mean Sunday, August 19th, right?

Officially, there's no bikes allowed at Pan Pacific and it may be hard to find space since the BBQs, kids, etc. are in full effect over the weekend. BUT, that has never stopped me from riding and loitering in there before.

There's lots of other parks available that are still central to most. I'm thinking the Not a Cornfield Field by Chinatown. It has blacktop and grass to play on, although it was originally and art installation piece, and I would hate to tear that space up. But, I think it's worth checkng out.

I'd be down to help scout places/spread the word, etc. Welcome to Los Angeles!

just last night I stumbled on a site that showed how to make a bike polo mallet out of an old ski pole and some pvc pipe. I'll post the link when I get home from work.

Tattiya, thanks for catching the error with the date. It should by Sunday, August 19 (not 18).

That sucks about Pan Pacific. Since this discussion is going on on three different boards, how about if we move this discussion to the LA bike polo list so we can have it all in one place. Email me at mgvidal@gmail.com to join the list. I'll have the list working by tomorrow.

That should work for mallets. In Madison, we use wood dowels,
the handles are 36" long, and 3/4" wide. Heads are 1.75" or 1.5".

But a variety of things work.

We have played in the BikeRoWave parking lot with sucess. The lot is empty on the weekends. And the Wave is open (bathroom) on Saturdays from 1-5pm.

tattiya suggested thenot a cornfield field(which apparently is no longer exclusively an art installation and therefore a-ok for bikes) locatedhere. what do you guys think? a week from today (sunday the 19th) at 3pm. bring friends and a bike you don't mind banging up a little.

the original suggestion I made for pan pacific park a couple months back wasnt for the park itself but for the bball courts up top by the parking lot... which seem to be vacant much of the day.

or we could always try to find a parking lot or garage or something

does anyone have time to roll past the notacornfield field to see how the ground is and also see if there are any shaded areas for taking breaks??

parking lots might not be ideal because the balls would inevitably fly away quickly on the blacktop (i'd say either fences or grass are necessary)...

i'll check out the notacornfield field today to see how it looks and if it's too rough we can just say fuck it and head to panpacific for starters on sunday.

just checked out not a corn field and it looks great.. nice and flat and green, some shade, some benches, two porta pots.

i'm a little worried about it being a state park, though.. there were two rangers handling the entrance, but they were blinded from the middle of the field by a small mound so even if bikes aren't allowed i think we can get away with it.. we'll also probably have to keep the beer low (not in quantity). make sure you enter from the spring st. side otherwise you'll have to ride around the whole damn thing like i did.

sorry to the westsiders.. i know it's kind of a hike. i'm thinking about driving my truck in order to carry some stuff and to have on hand in case someone seriously fucks up his or her bike, so if you want to ride to my place (just off crenshaw and washington) and ride in the back of my truck that might be an option.. i'm still deciding cause it seems lame to drive to bike polo, but then one of the last times i played i bent my fork and don't want to ride 6 miles back on a bent fork. hm...

I think we should play hardcourt. Grass is slow, imprecise (with shots), and lame. As far as I know, more cities play hardcourt (Milwuakee, Portland, East Coast cities). Also, Pan Pacific is more central.

These are two good reasons to try Pan Pacific. Is everyone cool with trying this first, or should we try Notacornfield?

I just mapped Notacornfield. It's 17.6 miles from my apartment in West LA. Its very far east and will be even farther for many westsiders. Pan Pacific is much more centrally located. I think we should try out Pan Pacific this Sunday.

What do others think?

See you at Pan Pacific today at the basketball courts at 3pm.

We'll have mallets and balls. Bring your bike.

For future games, maybe we can rotate the place. We can try LA High, Bikerowave, and Not a cornfield.
