About a month 1/2 ago I was in a bike accident. I was in the hospital for 3 days and needed surgery to my face. The bill came out to 89,000 dollars, lucky for me i have some good ass insurance and only have to pay 100 dollars, But this shit made me think about all the other people that get into wrecks and dont have insurance. It must fucking suck to get stuck with a bill like that. I guess what im saying is that i got lucky.

a seven block ambulance ride after an insulin reaction cost me about $1100, but with insurance it came out to $188 and change.

motorcycle crash
1 ambulance ride
8 xrays
8 hours of waiting for xray results
$19,000 bill
NO INSURANCE
My income was off the books so it appeared as if i were living below poverty level.
The county covered about $17,000... I still have to pay the doctor bills...

3 weeks in hospital,
broken rib
caused stomach ulcer.
got pancreatitis.
morphine every hour for 3 weeks.
and i still haven't paid my $118. i'm a cheapo bastard.
i figure if the insurance company already paid the 40k, why not the rest of the 118.

if you have no insurance ...as soon as you get into a hospital your first word should be Indgent (or however you spell it) Basicly your are saying you have no way of paying the bill...thats how they treat the homeless...as bernie it worked for him when he had to be taken at the Super fun DTLA ride #2...it is a trick i learned when i was a receptionist at an ER

free health care for everyone! i really should wear a helmet considering i do not have insurance and ride fixed - over the cahuenga pass too.
hypothetically, if humans were designed to have surgery, wouldn't it be easier to access the interior of our bodies via a flash zipper (snicker) or something. DOWN WITH WESTERN MEDICINE!

Yeah... this is serious biznizzz... where I come from, your ass is completely covered no matter who you are, or what your income or situation is. That's not the case here. You've got to be out of your mind to
choose not to have insurance. You're basically gambling with your future life savings to save some pocket change every month. If you aren't employed, or your employer doesn't give you any decent benefits... just find a way to cough it up. It's just not worth the risk.

for basic plan it is about 50 bucks a month from blue shield...
i think it works out to : 100 co-pay er visit, 20 co-pay doctor, 500 co-pay hospital stay for up to 3 days

unless you're like me and you need to have high risk insurance but insurance companies are assholes because of the whole pre-existing condition thing.

Man, we should have figured this health insurance thing 20 years ago. It's just shameful that your friggin' health is not considered a right here as it is in pretty much every other modern industrial country.

I had a lil ambulance ride in NY - I got doored and was pissed at the cabbie for wanting to walk (drive) away - so I let the ambulance take me to the hospital... they're still asking for $600 for it - 5 years later...
I didn't have health insurance for years.. pretty much the whole time I lived in NY.. I have insurance now through TOnik... if anyone is interested - it's pretty full coverage and good prices until you hit 30..

My little back surgery (laminectomy) came in at just under $200'000
It took the doctors a second look at the MRI's etc. to figure it out but no discount for their mistakes.
SO FAR... my 'great' insurance means I'm in for just over $5000.

Another reason why I'm wanting to switch back over to the trucking company I was let go from.
It was a fairly, decent plan that Swift offered where I only had to pay 30 bucks a month.
I'm thinking it was somewhere along the lines of BlueShield where the copay's and whatnot were exactly the same.
As far as our tax-dollars go, I still think a low-to-no cost health coverage system would be viable if funds were allocated right and malpractice-lawyers were neutered to some point.

I've got this accident insurance
http://www.adventureadvocates.com/
it's 30 a month, 25k coverage, 4k for helicopter evacuation. 500 deductible. It'll cover out of pocket expenses after health or auto insurance. So if your health insurance covers all but a 10k, they'll cover the rest except for that 500.
I definitely like the chopper fuel $ for mountain biking.

About Tonik, they give you a great deal/pitch, but I think they are a little shady.
When I signed up for it I clearly stated in my application that I have 7 titanium pins/plates in my jaw from TMJ surgery. Apparently they didn't read the application very clearly. A month later they called to clarify my smoking status because they couldn't read which box I checked and I said, "Well if you can't read that, did you read the part I wrote about the plates?" Their response was, "What plates?"
This led to a long talk with their underwriters, and they decided could not insure anything skeletal above the neck on me, even if I was in a car accident because they couldn't be certain that the plates wouldn't contribute to my hypothetical injuries. They were however willing to insure all the other, healthy/young/uncostly parts of me at an additional 30% above the intially quoted price.
For the record, no other health insurance company I priced out after Tonik excluded covering my jaw. I suspect that other people here might have pins from accidents and stuff, so be super clear about that in advance with Tonik.
