just sign up for it, they stop after that. I have no idea what the point of that is. Doesn't Facebook already do the exact same thing?

If by "live" you mean "reside indefinitely in the filesystem of the computer or mobile phone in which they landed, never again to be consulted or thought about by the intended human recipient," then you are correct.

being a new twitterist, i am still figuring out its application for me as a tool. I like the ability to in essence 'email-blast' the group about location updates on rides, etc. Otherwise, its true useful-ness seems a little limited for me, although the novelty is still entertaining right now.
The big difference between FB and Twitter from what i'm learning (im not on FB) is that it isn't a time-suck the way FB is. That is valuable to me because it would otherwise get in my way of being unemployed.

as a bike enthusiast, i find Loopt more useful than either of these things, since it includes location info.
