Come join LA Citycouncilmember Tom Labonge on his 2nd annual tour of the 4th Street Bicycle Boulevard.
Wednesday July 23rd.
6:15pm.
Parking lot at Shatto and 4th, near Vermont and the bowling alley!
Will there be bike cops again this year?
Will LaBonge demonstrate his CORKING skills as he does in this beautiful photo taken by Will Campbell from last year's ride?
Will there be ice cream?
Or BEER?
LIVE THE DREAM!!!
4SBB!!!
Come find out!

YES!!!!
Bring the City Councilmen to the bike rides not the bike rides to the City Council.
Can we hijack it to Mandeville Canyon? or Hollywood sign ?
:-D

reply
i say griffith observatory..... :)
would make for an excellent hijack!!
but SRSLY.
the city council, like 'em or not, has A LOT to do with getting better bikeways here in L.A.
garcetti recently introduced sharrows to the agenda.
rosendahl signed off the BWC's Cyclist Bill of Rights.
the more they see us as a unified presence putting pressure on them at all times, the better.
and FYI --- LaBonge et al. organized this ride! I am simply an extrememly ardent supported.
OBVIOUSLY.

and if you show up this ride, you still have a change to sign your name to the letter to the MTA board.....

yup. i've decided. for those of you that were willing to take the time to sign the petition to the metro, which you can still do here --->
metroletter@live.com
read all about it over at
LA STREETSBLOG
well, if you took to the time to do this, thank you!
I will take you and whoever else also signed out to beer after this 2nd annual 4SBB ride.
By showing up at an event like this, you are demonstrating your committment to advancing cycling in Los Angeles on a larger and more permanent scale.
Again, thank you! You shall be rewarded with your beer.
If you can't make it Wendesday, that's okay. Our lives are busy. I will think of other ways for you to demonstrate your worthiness as time goes on.
And reward you with --- BEER!

Hey, on Tom LaBonges website it says that everyone must wear helmets and sign waivers to ride. What's up with that?
pavetheplanet07.20.08 - 11:03 pm
reply
i caught that as well. i believe they want to cover their liability if anyone gets hurt.... or does something crazy....
:)
ingipet07.20.08 - 11:06 pm
reply
yeah but if you show up without a helmet, how are they not going to let you ride? its a public street and all. Unless they got some sort of parade permit and they are blocking it off for the ride. Which is actually pretty lame and kinda defeats the whole point of this thing, dontcha think?

hee hee!
well, last time we had a crew of bike cops to escort us while LaBonge corked stop signs....

Ha! On the ride to work this morning I noticed a few potholes filled in preparation for the ride!
I'll be coming home from work near the ride's scheduled start so I'll most likely be heading eastward on 4SBB and hoping to bump into you guys and join the par-tay as you head west.
Someone that can get Councilman LaBonge's ear either before or during the ride (I'm looking at you Ingipet, my dear!) please do every 4SBB rider a favor and mention the following improvements to the street:
1. A bicycle crossing button (like the one at Normandie) at Wilton Place!
2. A four-way stop at Norton!
3. A four-way stop at Hudson
4. Underground drainage diversion of the "Hudson River" that is almost always algae-slick and ever-flowing south across 4th at Hudson.
See you there!

DONE and DONE!!
I will also have my camera with me and document each "problem" area....i'll then send that along to his office after the ride....
Labonge also has a few more rides planned for the summer in his district. ----

Everyone should participate in this!
We are in times where the future of bicycle infrastructure in Los Angeles is dependent upon all of our cooperation. This is the time we need to take action. Please join us to ride with La Bonge on 4SBB.
4SBB could become the tipping point into which the rest of Los Angeles will follow. We need numbers. We need you on your bikes. You represent the future of cycling in LA.
Tell everyone.

ride leaves from the shatto parking lot, 6:15pm wednesday....rides west.... we might loop back on 4th to head back to the start point, but i'm not sure...

Ingrid, i'm sure this has been brought up, but some of us will be doing the mosey after the 4sbb ride so it would be great if the ride headed back East at some point or back to the start. Who is creating the route? Is it postable?
Thanks.

i'm know for sure we will end at the same parking lot we starting at -->shatto and 4th.

i keep having these visions of people just converging on 4SBB in this massive wave.
at 6pm on a wednesday? well, maybe not... :)
i view this more as an opportunity to continue my dialog with LaBonge on bike stuff...
also, it is just ever so slightly RAD that a city councilmember is organizing bike rides of his own volition.
pretty sure he's the only one doing that currently.
i'm planning to suggest a bike ride between council disctrict offices.....
starting with a ride from Labonge's office to Garcetti's...
--> here they are ---->

says LaBonge of his recent bike heavy trip to Berlin----
"But the most important thing, and this could take awhile for the people of Los Angeles to change, the motorists had great respect for people on bikes. I never felt anyone on my tail. If we were going straight and they were turning right, they waited for me to get through the intersection.
***Nobody cut me off . It was amazing. You immediately felt that there was some respect for the bicycle."***

Interesting interview; glad to know that hes thinking along these lines; I was especially encouraged to hear that he's thinking about new uses for Los Feliz Blvd.
One question I have though: when he says, "Rides start at 6:00 P.M. but we’ll wait a little bit for everyone and we’ll get back before daylight." does he mean this will be like CRANK Mob and we'll be out all night?

"I SECOND!!!!"

also, let me be CLEAR about the BEER.
I AM FULLY INTENT on fulfilling my BEER promise....
This will happen when the ride is over, back to the start point and LaBonge rides off.....or drives off....
around 8:30/9 i would guess....
but that could be included into a journey to the mosey. i certainly know a great route to chinatown from the 4SBB.

I'll let Ingrid recap for you Al, but i had a really nice time on the ride. I had never ridden on 4th Street before. It was cool seeing T.L. corking for us and wearing a T shirt and shorts. Not afraid to get his fingers dirty and be more 'street'. Nice to see.
Ok, the rest from Ms. 4SBB.
Thanks for posting the ride and getting us involved!

To - Rollers, Agent Orange, Borfo, Fuzz, TRENWAY, annie, randy, nicole, mikeywally, marino, johnvu, chickenleather, joe linton, colin bogart, jenn klausner and on and on and on.....i offically claim that ride in the name of the International Association of Armed Librarians.
***IAAL*MAF!!!*****
Watching LaBonge cork nearly every intersection was pretty classic. And in those shorts!!!
I'm just back from the big MTA Board meeting which was pretty good!!! We got our little BIKE moment and handed in that letter ..(thanks to all of you who signed!!)
I told Antonio Villaraigosa that last night we had a lot of fun riding with Tom LaBonge on 4th Street, a potential bike boulevard. I then encouraged him and the board to realize the benefits of integrating bicycles into their transit plans... and he was all, "Bikes are great, I love bikes, BIKE BIKE BIKE" -----
The moment certainly is now.... but we've got to keep the pressure on.... And keep those photo-ops coming!!!
Does anyone else remember seeing our *PAPARAZZI* that literally ran with the ride snapping LaBonge shots after making us all do ham-sandwitch thumbs up bicycle shots in the parking lot...??!!
There are more LaBonge rides coming up, i'll post 'em here in case you'd like to come along. They will occur for the next few weeks on wednesdays at 6pm ish.... griffith park next week....
stay tuned for photos, i'm working on uploading mine....but i would really like to collect any images others took from the event and collect them together into one show, which i can then send back to LaBonge's office and others....
