Thread Box:
ever screenprinted spokecards?
Thread started by tinycities at 07.7.08 - 1:27 pm

since all the spoke card talking is going on..

i know Louise has hand block printed spoke cards for crank mob before, but has anyone ever attempted to gocco the spoke cards?

gocco = savegocco.com .. also known as this little mini japanese screenprinting system.

someone posted in the other thread how spoke cards are really limited edition art prints and this would definitely take it to that level as this would make it limited edition pseudo screenprints.. im just curious.

yet again i'm a printmaker and in general a print/design dork so i bring up weird shit.

it would be really awesome to see spoke cards that were created color wise only on the spoke cards themselves and didn't actually have a masterfile..

reply

hmmm... still not sure what gocco is but I LOVE printing in all forms. and have screenprinted spokecards which were then laminated...

gocco is a small little toy looking machine thingy.. its a screenprinter. but instead of photosensitive emulsion, it utilizes carbon in lead / ink / toner to develop once exposed to specific sort of bulbs [ old time camera flash bulbs. ] and it only prints max the size of an index card. you can buy ones that print double that, but they're like 800 dollars.

its pretty much an all in one screenprinting machine minus the need for a powerwasher/exposure unit / chemical clean up, as there barely is any clean up regardless that its printing with oil based inks..

its also discontinued in the US, which is why Jill Bliss of Blissen started that save gocco site.

wow, I've never heard of a gocco before but I love the sounds of it. Do you actually have one?

The only "problem" I can see with screenprinted spoke cards is that they pretty much need to be laminated and that would kinda kill some of the cool tactile, layers-of-ink-on-paper quality of the screenprinting. Which is to say that they would sorta get reduced back to "image" rather than maintaining their "objecthood." (I'm a design nerd too, natch.)

However, the nice thing about hand printing is that you make all sorts of serendipitous mistakes. Handmade = fun! M! I! H!

My experience with Gocco is that making a maximum of about 30 to maybe 50 of something is pretty easy. So, if it is a small ride, that should be fine. Anything beyond that, regular screenprinting is SO MUCH easier.

@royalacademy

the one screen printed spoke card that I have has actually retained quite a lot of its tactile characteristics right through the lamination and it seems much more object-like than others.

Sean, you doubt me. i've done a run of 200-250 on one exposure of a gocco screen. yet again i'm a process nerd and i know how to max out the use of those expensive screens.

Ryan, yes i indeed own a gocco.

i can also letterpress by hand pretty well [ including making my own polymer plates ] i'm sure my parents are glad that they paid for 2 years of me solely fucking around in the syracuse university printmaking lab making random ass shit. waste of an education apparently [ and also explains why i'm back in california doing graphic design.. ]

so who wants to test run this shit, as i'm itching to print. no joke.

I hand painted paper that I printed on top of for the spoke cards I made for CRANK Mob a few months ago.. those came out really cool too, even after I laminated them...

@TC I didn't say it wasn't possible (I've done 100+ runs too), I just said regular screenprinting is much easier. Hey, if you want the hassle, have fun.............

rrh, i recommend classes at archetype at art center, as the vandercook i have access to is a piece of shit [ i did most of my letterpress in upstate new york, unless you have a tabletop press. ]

and sean, yeah i know, it is easier. but its harder to get access to the facilities.

4 color press at my house = easy access.. as soon as it's set up well anyways.. I'm building a paper drying rack soon also...

presses are irrelevant.. its more so the exposure unit [ especially if you expose a screen that can fit a 24x36 poster, as well as a powerwasher that doesn't train to the ocean.

personally not a fan of a presses and would rather bolt my screen to a table and hand register. yet again i print mostly on paper and rarely on cloth.

Screen Depot downtown exposes/reclaims screens for almost nothing ($8-15 to expose; $5-8 to reclaim). Just so you know......

yeah.. that's why I am super excited to work at Modern Multiples a fine arts silkscreening studio.. we have units to burn HUGE screens there...

I got the press from a friend and it will come in handy for the prints I need to make.. especially once I build the drying rack.. that's my main issue right now.. also I just like having stuff at home.. until now I've been printing on my desk in my bedroom.. and drying on my bed/floor/hallway/and any surface I can... not terrible but not great either..

yeah i know. its a pretty good deal. the label i used to work for used to use them.

the chance of me printing during the summer is slim though, when i can just wait until sept and do everything for free.

picking your brain, i need to silkscreen some small "Midnight Jolly Ridazz" pirate flags for the catalina trip coming up. size about 4''x6''. what's your opinion on the process i should use? thanks!

anything with cloth should be screenprinted.. its the paper stuff you can get get away with since it doesn't move nearly as easily..

the press rrh has is perfect for cloth.
