Hey Ridazz,
I am going to help out an another on a piece for
Hear in the City on KPFK.
They want to do a story on the new cycling anti-harassment law that was passed by city council this week.
If you have any stories about being harassed on the road, let me know.
I know there is lots of stories out there, I have had trash, eggs, and cans thrown at me over the years, which is of course nothing compared to the occaisional d-bag that wants to use a tone of metal in motion to try and bully you off the road.
I want to try and meet a few people in person to get some good recordings.

One time i was riding my tallbike and a guy threw an egg at me but it DID NOT break upon impact with my sweater. I looked down at him and yelled 'you throw like a girl' and the driver (not the thrower) laughed at his passenger and they sped off. Tame story i know but just thought id share.

Did you see the article in the LATEXTRA section of today's LA Times?
"It's a crime to harass L.A. cyclists" by Kate Linthicum. She reports that the LA City Council passed on law on Wednesday against threatening two-wheelers verbally or physically.
The law makes it a crime for drivers to threaten cyclists verbally or physically, and allows victims of harassment to sue in civil court without waiting for the city to press criminal charges. If you win, you can collect up to three times your damages plus lawyer fees. I'm not sure if it's just a verbal harassment how much you can collect but since lawyer fees are part of the awards, it should be easier to get legal counsel to back you up.

Meh. Harassment is harassment. More laws never make me feel safer.

Patrick and Friends,
Last week I was crossing the sixth street bridge towards Boyle Heights riding safely on the right side. Up ahead a grey sedan speeding the other direction decides to cross the double yellow into my lane and driving super fast honking and flashing the lights like they intend to plow into me. At the last second, he swerves back while screaming and laughing and races on past me. So fast I couldn't get the plates.
I'll admit my heart rate went up a little bit, but I mostly just felt sad for what a pathetic sack of shit that guy really is.
Another incident was on crank mob that was similar to this where I was being threatened by an oncoming swerving high speed car. Unfortunately another rider got scared, crashed her bike and was seriously injured because the car swerved past us. I'm not allowed to go into details on that because it is still going to trial.
Basically it's the equivalent of having a loaded gun cocked and pointed right in front of your face, and then laughed at. Seriously fucked up sense of humor. These are the types of people this ordinance was designed for.
IT IS A HUGE STEP FOR US. Don't take it lightly. Use it toward our advantage. Spread the news of how this threatens THEM from threatening US.

Sgt. Krumer did an interview for Hear in the City as well.
I recommend everyone listen to his breakdown of the new ordinance so they understand what kinds of things motorists can and can not do under the anti-harassment ordinance.
Essentially, motorists still have the right under the First Amendment to yell and cuss at you, but they can NOT use their car to try and scare you.

One time a car drove up and a girl spanked my ass... That incident didn't bother me so much as the others though. :)

This guy threatened to run through a crowd of cyclists. I recorded his license plate number just in case. So he naturally got out of his car threatened to kick my ass. The woman in the truck with him took my camera and threw it. I went to the police. They didn't see anything wrong with the driver's behavior.

you should contact Sgt. Krumer if this happened since the anti-harassment law has gone into effect, you might have a case against them.

I agree. If the anti-harassment law is in effect, take that guy's ass to court (after consulting with a lawyer of course).

Based on what I saw on the video this is reportable...I could not tell who grabbed the camera but at that point the verbal exchange crossed over into a possible battery (on you) and vandalism (if your camera was damaged). You indicated that the female was the one who did those actions.
Where did you try and make the report? Please contact me at 35128@lapd.lacity.org and we will get this resolved.
With regards to the agressive action of the male in the video...while he was trying to intimidate you he made no overt challenge to fight or threatened to physically assault you (at least not on video)...not sure if there is anything we can do with him.

Really? I never had shit thrown at me over the years. How does does retribution feel like? Cause it sounds like you are not the exemplary road cyclist you want to sound like. You must give respect to get it. I'm all for this anti harassment bill but it seems that a lot of cyclist with childish behavior refuse to follow the rules too, making themselves targets for road rage. I never fuck with cars unless they fuck with me. I don't flaunt my disregard of road laws by breaking them in front of motorist just because I can. I use discretion. If I was driving and I saw your wretched ass on the road trickmillia, I wouldn't harass you but I would understand if someone else did. Now shut the fuck up you big baby. Why don't you wear a helmet, give the right of way if its not yours, and follow the rules, just like any car?

at the end of 40 or so miles of riding, 1/2 mile uphill left to get home, a black escalade pulls up right next to me as i'm crossing the 210 bridge on fair oaks in pasadena, the passenger side door opens and hands push me, i eat it onto the sidewalk, i'm scraped a bit on my leg, the carbon fiber frame has a couple scraps, fortunately nothing is broken

yes. and so did the pasadena pd motorcycle office that was literally right next/behind them when they did it, dumbasses were pulled over within 1 block from the scene

On a RideARC ride one night, a few riders at the end were being passed by an SUV. Someone leaned out the back window to throw an egg but ended up falling out of the car and hitting the pavement. He was unconscious. In the meantime the riders stopped, called 911 and hung around until the ambulance came.

they got pulled over, i caught up real quick and started cussing at the guys on the passenger side, one of the tuff guys told me i "shouldn't be talking shit!" to which i laughed, the officer yelled at me for yelling at them so i backed off....checked myself, the bike, all was well aside from some scrapes, no biggie
as i stood there watching the officer go through his motions i thought about pressing charges, i was not as pissed off and had calmed down a bit by now, i wasn't broken and neither was the bike, i held the key to have these dork teenagers put into the system or not...this took me back to my own teenage days, it was very difficult getting out of the system and off probation and all that before i turned 18, it could have seriously destroyed my chances at life and career, at this i felt that i had to show mercy and not pluck and eye for an eye, i declined to press charges and just went home
a lot of folks feel i am a dum bass for not pressing charges, people can feel that way, people probably would've thought dude would be a dumb ass if he had not pressed charges against me when i was 15 as well robbing and tagging and being a general ass hole, i just hope and pray that they realize mercy does not come around too often and stop being such dumb asses

You obviously don't know me or you would know that I wear a helmet about 90% of the time. I'm exceedingly, polite to drivers on the road, but I. I ride safely and keep it legal most of the time. And I am not at all wretched, my handsome bike is second only top my winning smile. Your jealousy is quite understandable.
Every time I have had something thrown at me I was riding safely and legally... except of course, the time that i was standing on the sidewalk.
If you have any nuts or ovaries, come talk to me some time instead of making stupid cowardly comments on the interwebz.

You are a saint natefrogg! I've been really anti-car since I had a dude try to run me over. Like, every time I drive, I feel like I'm supporting that sort of behavior. And I wanted blood so I was really happy when the anti-harassment law got passed. But I think you make a good point. Sometimes mercy is golden.
That being said, I dunno if it is my new road bike, my newly mounted camera, the anti-harassment law, or my new love of the drops, but I haven't been honked at or yelled at in weeks. It's weird.
